If you want another daily puzzle built around spotting a connection, start with LinkedIn Pinpoint or Greatest Games’ Looplink. Pinpoint asks you to infer a category from clues; Looplink is explicitly billed by its publisher as a Connections-style grouping game. For a different kind of word challenge, try Strands, Crossclimb, or Wordle; for less wordplay and more constraint-solving, look at Queens, Tango, Zip, or Pips.
What makes a game like Connections?
NYT Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to sort them into four groups of four based on a shared theme. Each group has a color, with categories generally becoming harder from yellow toward purple. There is exactly one solution, but some words can plausibly fit more than one category, which is part of the challenge. The New York Times Help Center says the editors curate words and categories using the Oxford Dictionary.
That makes category inference the closest match—not simply any daily word game. The options below are grouped by the kind of thinking they use so you can choose between another association puzzle, a word hunt, and a logic grid.
Closest alternatives for finding a shared category
LinkedIn Pinpoint
Pinpoint is a natural choice if the part you enjoy most is figuring out what several clues have in common. It presents five clues that point to one category; you can reveal clues as you go, and your score rewards solving it with fewer revealed. LinkedIn says anyone can play, whether or not they have a LinkedIn account, and new puzzles arrive at midnight Pacific Time. Its games also include scores, streaks, leaderboards, and sharing with your network; LinkedIn says there are no prizes. See LinkedIn Games and its game help page.
#1 Best Overall
Greatest Games Looplink
Looplink is the most direct grouping alternative in this list: Greatest Games describes it as a Connections-style puzzle. Its stated format is four groups of four, with four shared link tiles reused to close a loop. That added loop mechanic gives the sorting task a different structure from Connections’ 16-word board. Greatest Games says its games are free, require no account, and reset at midnight US Eastern; these are the publisher’s stated access details. Visit Greatest Games.
Greatest Games Categlorious
Categlorious also asks you to connect words, but it is not a four-by-four sorting board. You find four categories of three words each, with one word connecting all four categories. It is worth trying if you want a grouping puzzle but are open to a smaller, more interlocked format. It is part of the same Greatest Games collection.

Daily word games with different mechanics
NYT Strands: find a theme in a letter grid
Strands is a themed word-search-style puzzle. Rather than sort a set of words into categories, you uncover hidden words and reveal the puzzle’s theme. It suits players who like searching for relationships among words but want those relationships embedded in a grid. The NYT lists it among its daily games on its Games page.
LinkedIn Crossclimb: build a word ladder
Crossclimb asks you to arrange words into a ladder in which each successive word differs by one letter, then solve clues for the words at the ends. It combines word transformation with a trivia-like clue step, rather than category matching. Find it through LinkedIn Games.

Wend is a letter-grid word-finding game: connect letters to discover hidden words, using every letter exactly once. Choose it when scanning and tracing paths through letters sounds more appealing than sorting a word list. It is also part of LinkedIn Games.
NYT Wordle and Spelling Bee: short word challenges
Wordle is a focused deduction puzzle: guess a five-letter word in six chances. Spelling Bee takes a word-building approach, asking you to make words from seven letters. Neither recreates Connections’ grouping mechanic, but both offer a compact daily word challenge. The NYT lists them alongside Connections on its Games page.

Logic and spatial puzzles when you want fewer words
LinkedIn Queens, Tango, and Zip
- Queens: Place one queen in each row, column, and colored region.
- Tango: Fill a grid with two emoji types while following adjacency rules.
- Zip: Connect numbered points in sequence with a path that fills every cell.
These LinkedIn games trade word association for visual constraints. Their rules are distinct, but each rewards careful placement and checking what a move forces elsewhere. LinkedIn lists them on LinkedIn Games.
NYT Pips: place the dominoes
Pips is a domino-placement logic puzzle. The NYT describes its aim as placing every domino in the right spot. Try it if you prefer working through a board and its constraints to finding word connections. It appears on the NYT Games page.

Quick Recap
Choose by the kind of puzzle you want
- Closest category-solving feel: Try Pinpoint for clues leading to one category, or Looplink for grouped tiles and a loop mechanic.
- More word relationships: Pick Strands for a themed word search, or Categlorious for a different kind of word grouping.
- Word manipulation or discovery: Choose Crossclimb for a ladder, Wend for a letter grid, Wordle for deduction, or Spelling Bee for word-building.
- Visual constraint solving: Try Queens, Tango, Zip, or Pips.
- A broader daily-games lineup: The NYT’s Games page also lists The Crossword and The Mini Crossword, alongside its other daily puzzles.
