For most PS4 owners, the best buy is a 4TB or 5TB portable USB 3.x hard drive. It adds room for a large game library without the cost of an SSD. Choose a portable SSD instead if faster transfers, quiet operation, and resistance to bumps matter more than capacity per dollar; choose an 8TB desktop HDD only if you want the PS4’s maximum supported capacity and have room for its power adapter.
Whichever you choose, the drive must meet Sony’s extended-storage requirements: 250GB to 8TB, SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0 or later), connected directly to the console rather than through a hub. Sony says proper operation is not guaranteed for every model, so check the exact drive, cable, and power requirements before buying. Sony’s PS4 external-storage requirements
10 external drives to consider for PS4
These are category picks, not a claim that every capacity or hardware revision in a product family has been tested on every PS4. Check the exact model’s capacity, USB connection, included cable, and power needs. A compatible drive can hold and run PS4 games as extended storage; the PlayStation logo is not a technical requirement.
| Drive | Type | Capacity to consider | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seagate Game Drive for PlayStation | Portable HDD | 4TB or 5TB | Best overall licensed HDD | Licensed branding may cost more than a standard HDD of similar capacity. |
| WD_BLACK P10 Game Drive | Portable HDD | 4TB or 5TB | Gaming-branded portable alternative | Compare its price with ordinary portable HDDs; PS4 does not require the gaming label. |
| Seagate Expansion Portable | Portable HDD | 2TB, 4TB, or 5TB | Value-focused capacity | Verify the exact model’s USB interface, cable, and power requirements. |
| WD My Passport | Portable HDD | 4TB or 5TB | Mainstream portable storage | Product-family names can cover different generations; check the exact model. |
| Toshiba Canvio Basics | Portable HDD | 2TB or 4TB | No-frills budget option | Confirm regional availability and the exact model’s specifications. |
| WD_BLACK D10 | Desktop HDD | 8TB | Maximum PS4 capacity | Requires external power and desk space; inconvenient to move. |
| Seagate Game Drive External SSD | Portable SSD | 1TB or 2TB | Licensed SSD choice | Costs more per terabyte than an HDD and holds a smaller library at a given budget. |
| SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Game Drive | Portable SSD | 2TB | Premium compact SSD | Expensive for buyers whose main goal is adding capacity. |
| Crucial X9 Pro or X10 Pro | Portable SSD | 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB | Cross-device SSD | Check that the box includes a suitable USB-A cable or adapter for PS4. |
| Samsung T7 Shield | Portable SSD | 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB | Rugged general-purpose SSD | Its cost can be difficult to justify for a drive that will stay beside the console. |
For the Seagate Game Drive External SSD, the manufacturer announced officially licensed PS4/PS5 models in 1TB and 2TB capacities. Seagate’s announcement PlayStation Direct listed a 5TB Seagate External HDD Game Drive at $219.99, a 5TB ASTRO BOT Limited Edition at $179.99, and a 2TB SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Game Drive at $289.99 on August 18, 2026. Those are U.S. direct-store prices observed on that date, not guaranteed current prices or the lowest prices elsewhere. PlayStation Direct storage listings

How to choose the right PS4 drive
HDD or SSD?
A portable HDD is the practical choice when you want many games for the money. It has moving parts, can make spinning or seeking sounds, and is more vulnerable to drops and vibration than an SSD. Portable models usually draw power through USB; larger desktop HDDs commonly need an AC adapter.
An SSD is small, silent, and more resistant to movement, and it can transfer games faster. Independent testing has found faster transfer performance from SSDs, but results vary by game and task. The PS4’s hardware and USB connection limit the improvement, so an SSD does not guarantee dramatically shorter loads or higher frame rates. Treat it as a premium convenience and transfer-speed choice, not a way to make games run at 60fps. GamesRadar’s PS4 drive testing
How much capacity?
- 1TB: A small-library option, most compelling when you specifically want an SSD; check whether a 2TB model is close in price.
- 2TB: A reasonable fit for casual players or an SSD buyer prioritizing a compact, faster drive.
- 4TB: A strong all-around capacity for a portable HDD and a practical choice for most owners.
- 5TB: Often the best balance of a large library and portable HDD form factor.
- 8TB: Sony’s maximum documented extended-storage capacity. This is often a desktop-drive choice, so account for external power and space.
Advertised capacity is not all available for games: formatting, updates, add-ons, and the free space needed during installations all affect what fits. Game sizes vary, so a fixed “number of games” claim is only an estimate.

Licensed, portable, or desktop?
Sony specifies connection and capacity requirements, not a PlayStation brand or licensing mark. A licensed drive can offer console-specific styling, official branding, or a matching support proposition, but it is not necessarily more compatible or faster than a standard USB 3.x drive that meets Sony’s requirements. WD says compatible My Passport models can be formatted as PS4 extended storage, and Seagate provides PS4 setup guidance for external drives. WD’s PS4 guidance · Seagate’s PS4 setup guidance
Choose a portable drive if it will sit beside the console, travel, or move between systems. Choose a desktop drive if capacity is the priority and you can accommodate its power adapter. For an SSD with USB-C on the drive end, confirm that a compatible USB-A cable or adapter is included; a charge-only or unreliable adapter can prevent detection.
Planning to use the drive with a PS5?
A USB extended-storage drive can be useful for compatible PS4 games on PS5: those games can be played directly from external USB storage. PS5-native games cannot be played directly from an ordinary USB extended-storage drive; they must be moved to the console’s internal SSD or compatible internal expansion storage. An HDD or SSD bought for PS4 can therefore have a second use, but it is not a replacement for a PS5 internal SSD. Sony’s storage guidance for PS4 and PS5

Format and set up the drive
Formatting as extended storage erases the drive. Back up anything you want to keep before starting. Sony documents the following menu path; the drive should be connected directly to a PS4 USB port.
- Connect the drive directly to the console. Do not use a USB hub.
- Back up or remove files on the drive that you need to preserve.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Devices > USB Storage Devices.
- Select the drive, then choose Format as Extended Storage and confirm.
- To set it as the default installation location, open Settings > Storage, select the relevant storage location, press the Options button, and choose the option to set it as the application install location.
- To move installed games or applications, open Settings > Storage > System Storage > Applications, press the Options button, choose Move to Extended Storage, select the items, then confirm.
After formatting, the drive appears in Settings > Storage as extended storage. Applications and add-ons can be stored there; updates go to the location of the related application. Saved application data, themes, and screenshots or video clips are not stored there under Sony’s extended-storage rules. Use a separate backup method for saves and media: extended storage is not a complete PS4 backup. Sony’s storage and setup instructions

Keep the drive connected while using games installed on it. To disconnect it while the PS4 is on, open the quick menu and select Sound/Devices > Stop Using Extended Storage. Do not unplug it during shutdown or while the console is entering rest mode. Sony allows multiple USB devices to be connected, but only one drive formatted as extended storage can be active at a time. Sony’s safe-removal guidance

If you move the drive between PS4 consoles, stop using it safely first. Do not reformat it on a computer if you want to preserve its PS4 installations. Keep a spare compatible cable available if the drive intermittently disconnects, and place a portable HDD where it will not be knocked over while spinning.
Fix common PS4 external-drive problems
The PS4 does not recognize the drive
- Connect it directly to the PS4, not through a hub.
- Try the console’s other USB port and check that the cable is fully seated; replace the cable if necessary.
- Confirm the drive supports SuperSpeed USB and is between 250GB and 8TB.
- Restart the PS4 and reconnect the drive.
- If there is no data you need to preserve, format it as extended storage. If the issue continues, test another compatible drive.

USB or formatting error codes
- CE-41902-6: Sony associates this with the USB 3.0-or-later requirement. If the drive is known to meet it, connect it firmly and promptly to the console.
- CE-41899-1: Connect the drive directly to the PS4 rather than through a USB hub.
- CE-30002-5 or CE-30022-7: Try formatting again; if the problem continues, restart the console and retry. Formatting erases the drive.
- CE-30006-9: Reconnect the drive and follow the console’s file-system repair instructions; format again if needed. If the error remains, Sony says a different HDD may be required.

Quick Recap
Which drive should you buy?
- Most PS4 owners: A 4TB or 5TB portable HDD, with the Seagate Game Drive, WD_BLACK P10, WD My Passport, and Seagate Expansion Portable among the category options.
- Budget buyer: Compare standard 2TB or 4TB portable HDDs, including the Toshiba Canvio Basics and Seagate Expansion Portable; prioritize exact-model compatibility and value over gaming branding.
- Very large library: An 8TB desktop HDD such as the WD_BLACK D10, if its external power and size suit your setup.
- Speed, silence, or travel: A 1TB or 2TB portable SSD, or a larger Crucial or Samsung SSD if broader use across devices matters enough to justify the cost.
- Moving to PS5: A 4TB or 5TB HDD is useful for keeping a large PS4 library playable from USB; choose an SSD if compactness and transfers matter more than capacity per dollar.
