The best fan-made Pokémon game depends on what you want from it: a new region and darker story, original creatures, a deep RPG, or a playful mechanic like Pokémon fusion. For a strong starting shortlist, consider Pokémon Reborn for depth, Pokémon Infinite Fusion for its inventive combinations, Pokémon Insurgence for alternate forms and challenge options, and Pokémon Uranium for its original region and custom Pokémon. This is a reader-fit selection, not a definitive ranking: there is no established universal ranking of the fan-game scene.
What makes a Pokémon fan game worth trying?
These projects differ in more than story and battle difficulty. Some are standalone games you install directly; others are ROM hacks that require a patch and an emulator. Their tone, original mechanics, scope, and supported devices also vary. The shortlist below focuses on those differences so you can choose by the experience you want rather than by an unsupported claim that one game is objectively number one.
- Originality: Does the game add new creatures, forms, or a distinctive central mechanic?
- Tone and story: Is it a familiar journey, a more serious adventure, or something more experimental?
- Scope: Is the project presented as a complete game, and who currently supports it?
- Mechanics: Does it change battles or collection in a way that suits your tastes?
- Device and setup: Is it a standalone application or a ROM hack, and what platforms does the project actually support?
Which fan-made Pokémon game should you choose?
| Game | Distinctive appeal | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Reborn | Depth and a substantial RPG experience | Players looking for a deep, complete fan-made RPG | A September 2026 independent guide recommends it for depth; check the project’s own documentation for current details. |
| Pokémon Infinite Fusion | Combining two Pokémon into a merged creature with combined types, stats, and sprites | Players who value experimentation and creativity | A September 2026 independent guide highlights the fusion concept; check the project’s own documentation for current details. |
| Pokémon Insurgence | Delta Pokémon, new Mega Evolutions, challenge options, and a new region | Players who want new forms, customization, and a darker story premise | Its FAQ states that it is a standalone RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials game, not a ROM hack. |
| Pokémon Uranium | A new region, original creature designs, and a Nuclear type | Players drawn to a long-running fan project and custom Pokémon | The project history documents a transition from original-team support to continued development by an independent fan group. |
Pokémon Reborn: for a deep RPG
A September 2026 independent guide describes Reborn as a deep, complete game made with RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials, and recommends it for players seeking depth. That is the guide’s assessment, not a universal quality ranking. Consult the project’s own documentation for current version, distribution, and platform information.
Pokémon Infinite Fusion: for creative combinations
Infinite Fusion’s defining idea is combining two Pokémon into one: the guide describes the resulting designs as having merged types, stats, and sprites. It recommends the game for creativity. If that mechanic is what appeals to you, verify current requirements and installation instructions with the project itself; a third-party guide is not proof that a particular build works on a given device.

Pokémon Insurgence: for Delta Pokémon and a darker adventure
Set in the Torren region, Insurgence features Delta Pokémon, new Mega Evolutions, online trading, secret bases, character customization, difficulty choices, and challenge modes. Its story description specifically mentions cults, so expect a darker premise than a lighthearted substitute for the official games. The project’s feature and download information is at the Insurgence site.
Insurgence’s FAQ describes it as a standalone RPG Maker XP and Pokémon Essentials executable rather than a ROM hack. That means it does not use the ROM-hack-and-emulator setup described below. The FAQ lists Windows downloads and a Mac guide, says there is no native Linux support, and says mobile platforms are unsupported. These are the project’s stated compatibility notes, not independent device testing; check its FAQ before installing.

Pokémon Uranium: for original creatures and a new region
Uranium takes place in the Tandor region and adds more than 150 custom-designed Pokémon and a Nuclear type, according to its project history. The history credits JV and InvoluntaryTwitch and describes a nine-year development period from 2007 to 2016; version 1.0 was released on August 6, 2016.
The same history says official support ceased a month after release and an independent fan group continued development and reopened the forum in September 2016. That history is useful context, but it does not establish that any particular current download mirror is safe or authorized. Check the project’s own current channels and use care with third-party downloads.

Fan game or ROM hack: what is the difference?
A fan game is generally a standalone application and does not require a Nintendo game file. A ROM hack is a patch applied to a copy of an original game and played through an emulator. The distinction matters because the setup, software, and device compatibility differ by project. Some guides discuss additional routes such as handheld ports or community runtimes, but those methods are specific to particular games and versions; verify them in the relevant project’s current documentation instead of assuming they apply across the board.
For ROM hacks, do not confuse a patch with a game ROM. Nintendo states that third-party file-hosted copies of Nintendo games are unauthorized and that uploading and downloading pirate copies is illegal. Avoid ROM download links and unverified mirrors; consult Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ for its statements about Nintendo game files.

How to check downloads, support, and device compatibility
- Identify the project type. Read the official project page or FAQ to find out whether the game is standalone or a ROM hack.
- Use project-authorized sources. Start from the project’s own site or documentation, rather than a search result or an old mirror. For Insurgence, use its project site and FAQ.
- Check your exact platform and version. Look for current instructions for your operating system and build. Compatibility claims for another game—or even another version of the same game—do not establish that your setup will work.
- Confirm who maintains the project. A project’s history can explain whether original developers still provide support or whether a fan group has taken over.
- For a ROM hack, obtain the patch, not a downloaded ROM. Follow the project’s lawful setup guidance and do not use third-party copies of Nintendo game files.
Can Pokémon fan games be sold?
For games made with Pokémon Essentials, the Pokémon Essentials Guidelines say the games must be free to access and play and cannot be monetized, including through voluntary payments or monetized links. The guidelines quote toolkit creator Maruno saying: “Pokémon Essentials was/is created with the sole intent of being absolutely free to use.” This is guidance for projects made with that toolkit, as reproduced in the Pokémon Essentials Guidelines; it is not legal advice or a statement about every fan project.
