For an older PC, the best free-to-play games to try first are Roblox, League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Among Us—but “low spec” depends on the individual computer and the game. This guide uses verified publisher requirements where available and labels other picks as candidates rather than pretending every title has confirmed current specifications. “FTP” here means free-to-play, not file transfer protocol.
How to choose a free game for an older PC
Start with the game’s official minimum requirements, not its age, file size, or reputation for running on weak hardware. A minimum is a compatibility floor, not a promise of smooth play, a particular frame rate, or high graphics settings. Check the operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware and API, and storage together.
The strongest hardware-specific evidence in this list is for League of Legends, Roblox, and Fortnite. Epic also recommends Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Among Us as low-spec options, but that recommendation is not a benchmark. For the remaining games, the picks below are discovery suggestions; confirm their current requirements on the official PC store or publisher page before installing.
Verified low-spec starting points
League of Legends — MOBA
Riot lists Windows minimums of an Intel Core i3-530 or AMD A6-3650-class processor, graphics such as GeForce 400 series, AMD HD 6570, or Intel HD 4600, 1 GB VRAM, 2 GB RAM, and 16 GB HDD storage. The listed operating systems are Windows 10 Build 19041 or later and Windows 11. Riot also says Windows players need DirectX 11 feature level 11_0 to continue playing since patch 25.21. Roblox — user-created experiences
Roblox’s Windows application requires DirectX 10 or higher feature-level support. Roblox recommends a recent processor at 1.6 GHz or better, at least 1 GB memory on Windows 10 or 11, and 300 MB storage. Experiences are made by users, so an application that meets the baseline may still struggle with a particular experience. Details are on Roblox Support’s computer requirements page.
Team Fortress 2 — class-based team shooter
Steam identifies Team Fortress 2 as free-to-play and directs players to its Steam game page for requirements. It is a reasonable candidate to check for a modest PC, but do not rely on old third-party figures as current specifications. See Steam Support’s free-to-play information.

Rocket League — car soccer
Epic describes Rocket League as free-to-play and able to scale down on low-spec PCs. That makes it worth checking, not a guarantee that every integrated graphics chip will run it well. Epic’s recommendation appears in its May 31, 2025 low-spec game guide.
Fall Guys — obstacle-course party game
Epic describes Fall Guys as free-to-play and suitable for low-end PCs, with a short-session party format. Treat that as a recommendation rather than a hardware test; confirm the current PC requirements before downloading. See Epic’s low-spec game guide.

Among Us — social deduction
Epic characterizes Among Us as a small indie party game with low-spec PC requirements. It is a natural choice if you want social deduction rather than a demanding action game. Epic’s statement is an editorial recommendation, not a published benchmark, in its low-spec game guide.
Worth checking, but verify current requirements first
These games broaden the options by genre. Their inclusion is a shortlist for investigation, not a verified promise that they will run on any particular low-end PC. Requirements, PC availability, free access, and account limits can change; check the publisher or current PC storefront listing for your region and edition.

Competitive shooters and team games
- VALORANT: Tactical team shooter. Confirm Riot’s current operating-system support, hardware requirements, and anti-cheat compatibility.
- Counter-Strike 2: Competitive shooter and a more cautious pick for a particularly old machine; check Valve’s current requirements rather than relying on reported memory figures.
- Dota 2: Team strategy MOBA. Verify the live Steam requirements.
- Overwatch: Team-based action game. Confirm current PC availability and requirements through its publisher.
- Brawlhalla: Platform fighter; check the current PC listing for specifications and free access.
- World of Tanks Blitz: Tank combat. Requirements can be platform-specific, so use the current PC listing rather than mobile requirements.
Online worlds and action games
- Old School RuneScape: Long-running online role-playing game. Verify the current official client requirements; do not assume legacy specifications still apply.
- RuneScape: A separate game from Old School RuneScape. Check the current client requirements and what free-account access includes.
- Warframe: Online action game that Epic identifies as free-to-play. Its ongoing development means current requirements should be checked before installation.
- War Thunder: Free-to-play vehicle combat; confirm Gaijin’s current requirements. The graphics burden may differ by mode and settings.
- Unturned: Multiplayer survival game. A roundup reports an 8 GB RAM minimum, making it a poor assumption for especially old PCs; verify the current official listing.
- Destiny 2: Online action game and a weaker fit for very low-spec systems. A roundup reports a 6 GB RAM minimum; confirm current requirements with the publisher.
- Path of Exile: Online action RPG. Confirm current free-to-play access and hardware requirements before choosing it.
- Guild Wars 2: Online RPG with a free entry option. Check what that account includes, any expansion limits, and the latest requirements.
- EVE Online: Space MMO with a free account option. Check current free-account limits and PC requirements.
- Albion Online: Online sandbox RPG. Verify current PC requirements and account or monetization limits.
- Hearthstone: Digital card game. Confirm current PC availability, requirements, and free-to-play details.
- Bongo Cat: Lightweight casual desktop game surfaced in low-end game roundups, but it is not a conventional multiplayer video game; include it only if a desktop toy fits what you want to play.
Fortnite is free, but not a safe pick for the weakest PCs
Epic’s current minimums are an Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 GPU, Intel Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz, 8 GB RAM, and Windows 10 version 22H2 64-bit or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 64-bit. Epic cautions that a PC meeting only the minimum may not run at the highest settings, and suggests lowering graphics settings and closing background applications. That makes Fortnite a try-with-settings-reduced option only if the PC clears the published floor; it is not a blanket recommendation for the very weakest computers. - Identify the exact hardware. In Windows, open Settings > System > About to check the processor and installed RAM. Use Task Manager > Performance to identify the graphics device, or check the computer manufacturer’s specifications.
- Compare every requirement. Check the game’s supported Windows version, graphics API or feature level, processor, RAM, graphics hardware and VRAM where listed, and free storage. A processor that seems old or new by itself does not settle compatibility.
- Check free access and the intended mode. Free-to-play may cover entry to the game without covering every expansion, mode, cosmetic, or account feature. Confirm the current terms for the PC edition and region.
- If the PC meets only the minimum, reduce load first. Lower resolution and graphics quality, close background applications, and retest. Do not assume a minimum-spec listing guarantees a smooth experience.
- If a game still performs poorly, reassess before buying upgrades. Compare the exact computer against the publisher’s requirements and check whether the graphics hardware, memory, storage, or operating system is the limiting factor. An upgrade is conditional on the specific PC and game, not on the label “low spec.”
How this shortlist should be read
This is not a hands-on performance ranking: no frame rates or universal compatibility claims are established here. The best-supported first checks are the games with publisher requirements or explicit low-spec recommendations above. The remaining candidates can still be good genre matches, but should not be treated as confirmed fits until their current official requirements are checked.
