Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor most modern desktop setups, start with Ironwail, especially if your fan-made map is large or demanding. Choose QuakeSpasm for a classic-focused, portable option and a useful fallback; use vkQuake or QuakeSpasm-Spiked when the map or mod calls for their particular features. Before installing anything, check the release’s readme: its engine instructions take precedence over a general recommendation.
Which Quake port should you choose?
| Port | Best reason to try it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ironwail | Designed for high performance on demanding maps. Its project documents an add-ons menu and reduced loading time for jumbo maps. | The project explicitly prioritizes performance over maximum compatibility. Check the map’s readme if it requires a feature that is missing. |
| QuakeSpasm | A classic-focused, portability-oriented engine with documented 64-bit support and fixes involving custom maps and mods. | Those strengths do not establish universal compatibility; follow the map’s engine instructions. |
| vkQuake | A QuakeSpasm-based port with Vulkan rendering, potentially useful when a release expects its features. | Confirm your system supports the required rendering path and that the release calls for vkQuake or compatible features. |
| QuakeSpasm-Spiked | Its additional QuakeSpasm-derived features may suit a mod that specifically recommends it. | Choose it to meet a release’s requirements, not as a presumed universal best option. |
These are practical recommendations based on the projects’ descriptions and mod documentation, not independent performance tests. No complete compatibility matrix or compatibility percentage is established for these ports.

How to match a port to a fan-made release
Check four things in the map or mod’s readme before choosing an engine:
- Compatibility: Does the release name a port, engine version, or required feature?
- Map size and complexity: For an ambitious or large map, Ironwail’s project emphasizes high performance and documents reduced loading time for jumbo maps. These are stated project goals and features, not independently verified benchmark results.
- Rendering and hardware: vkQuake uses Vulkan, so check that your system supports the required rendering path.
- Mod-specific features: Some content may expect custom effects or audio-format support. A progs_dump manual recommends QuakeSpasm, Ironwail, and vkQuake in its own mapping/mod context; that recommendation is not a guarantee for every release.
If the readme specifies an engine, use that recommendation first. If it does not, Ironwail is a sensible general starting point for a modern desktop, with QuakeSpasm as a practical alternative when compatibility or a classic-focused setup matters.

What the port descriptions establish
Ironwail: performance-oriented, not a promise of maximum compatibility
The Ironwail project README describes it as “A fork of the popular GLQuake descendant QuakeSpasm with a focus on high performance instead of maximum compatibility, with a few extra features sprinkled on top.” The project says it moves work to the GPU and documents an add-ons menu and shorter loading time for jumbo maps. Treat these as the project’s stated priorities and features rather than a measured guarantee for a particular map or computer.
QuakeSpasm: a portable, classic-focused option
QuakeSpasm’s documentation highlights cross-platform builds, 64-bit support, and fixes involving custom maps and mods. It lists changes for version 0.96.3; that documentation alone does not establish that 0.96.3 is the latest release at publication. Its map-related fixes make it a reasonable fallback to try when another port does not behave as expected, but they do not prove every map will work.

vkQuake and QuakeSpasm-Spiked: use them when features matter
vkQuake is a Vulkan port based on QuakeSpasm. A Quake source-port catalogue describes it as having most features from QuakeSpasm-Spiked; that broad description should not be read as a guarantee that a specific mod’s requirements are satisfied.
QuakeSpasm-Spiked is worth considering when a release explicitly relies on its extra features. The progs_dump manual discusses port recommendations and audio-format support for its mapping/mod context. Its advice is useful for that context, not a blanket rule for all fan-made Quake levels.

Installing a port and using your Quake game data
The engine and Quake’s game data are separate. Obtain legitimate game data separately, then follow the chosen port’s official installation instructions and the map’s own readme. Folder layouts and engine expectations can differ, so there is no single install procedure that fits every release.

- Get the engine from its official project instructions. Use the documentation for the port you selected rather than assuming another port’s folder layout applies.
- Provide Quake game data. QuakeSpasm’s instructions place the executable and optional
quakespasm.pakalongside theid1directory. Ironwail documents detecting the 2021 release content when Quake is installed through Steam. - Install the map or mod where its readme expects it. Follow any named engine, feature, or game-directory requirements in the release instructions.
- Launch through the chosen port and verify the release loads as intended. If it does not, re-check the map’s engine requirements and try a recommended compatible port rather than assuming the map works in every engine.
When to switch ports
- If a release names a particular engine or feature, switch to the recommended option before troubleshooting unrelated settings.
- If a large map performs poorly, Ironwail is a reasonable port to try based on its performance-oriented design; the project’s claims do not guarantee a specific frame rate.
- If a map has problems in Ironwail, try QuakeSpasm as a compatibility-oriented alternative, while still checking the release’s instructions.
- If a mod calls for Vulkan or QuakeSpasm-Spiked-specific features, verify that the corresponding port and your system meet that requirement.
