Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the strongest all-around recommendation from the major 2025 lists examined here, but “best” depends on what you play and where you play it. This retrospective covers the notable releases identified by critics and editorial panels through the 2025 season, not a universal ranking or a complete prediction of the year’s final standings.
Our lead recommendation: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Sandfall Interactive’s debut combines classic turn-based role-playing with action-driven timing and reactions. The Associated Press placed it first in its 2025 top-games list, GameSpot included it among the year’s best-reviewed games, and GamesRadar+ named it its clear 2025 Game of the Year choice. Those are independent editorial judgments rather than proof that every player will prefer it.
Choose it if you want a solo, story-focused RPG with conventional party-based strategy sharpened by active combat inputs. Its cross-source support makes it the safest single starting point for a reader seeking one standout game, while its genre still leaves room for other picks below.

What the major lists actually measure
Metacritic’s midyear snapshot
Metacritic’s list covers games released from January 1 through June 30, 2025, using Metascores recorded on June 25. A game needed at least seven professional critic reviews. When multiple platforms existed, Metacritic used the version with the largest number of reviews. Its rules exclude ordinary ports, expansions and downloadable content, mobile games, compilations, and definitive or Game of the Year editions. This is an aggregate-score snapshot, not a staff ballot or a final-year ranking: Metacritic’s methodology and list.

GamesRadar+’s year-end ballot
GamesRadar+ combined ranked ballots from its staff, with each contributor submitting ten choices. Its eligibility window ran from December 1, 2024 through November 30, 2025; remasters, expansions and early-access games were excluded. The resulting order reflects the combined preferences of that staff, not review averages: GamesRadar+’s ranking.

GameSpot says its annual list was produced through staff voting followed by discussion. That process answers a different question from Metacritic’s review aggregate and GamesRadar+’s ranked ballot, so their positions should not be merged into one supposedly objective score: GameSpot’s year-end list.

Editorial roundups
The Guardian’s midyear article deliberately ranges across genres, while its year-end list adds descriptions and platform context. These roundups are useful for discovering games outside a score-driven top tier, but they are editorial selections rather than a standardized ranking: Guardian midyear roundup and Guardian year-end roundup.
How to pick the right 2025 game
- Start with play style. Pick RPG, puzzle, racing, sports, platforming, action or cooperative play before comparing list positions.
- Match the platform. A game praised on one list may not be available on your console or may have different editions. Check the current platform information in GameSpot’s guide and the store page for your region.
- Decide how you will play. Choose a solo narrative, difficult combat, relaxed exploration or multiplayer with friends; the shortlist above is organized around that decision.
- Treat scores as signals, not instructions. Review aggregates, staff votes and individual editorial lists measure different things. Use the method that best matches your own priorities.
A note on Monster Hunter Wilds performance reports
Metacritic’s June 2025 update mentioned PC performance complaints for Monster Hunter Wilds at that time. That is historical context, not a current technical assessment for September 2026. Check recent platform-specific patch notes and player reports before making a purchase decision.

If you want one recommendation, start with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. If that genre or format is not for you, choose from the shortlist by play style and verify platform compatibility rather than treating any list as a definitive order.
