Xbox One and Windows PC players can share online sessions in Minecraft Bedrock Edition, Sea of Thieves, Halo Infinite, Grounded, Fortnite and Minecraft Dungeons. The best choice depends on whether you want a sandbox, competitive matches, a shared-world adventure or shorter co-op missions.

Cross-play is not automatic just because a game appears on both platforms. Edition, game mode, account ecosystem and the specific Xbox version can change the answer.

What Xbox One–PC cross-play means

Cross-play lets players on Xbox One and Windows PC join the same online multiplayer session. It is different from cross-progression, which carries saves or progression between platforms; a game can support one, the other or both.

Always check the exact edition and mode. Minecraft Java and Bedrock use different compatibility tracks, Halo Infinite’s multiplayer and campaign have different access models, and Fortnite’s modes may not all follow identical rules.

Official material does not establish one ideal group size for every title, so the comparison below describes each game’s session shape instead of inventing player limits.

Xbox One and PC cross-play games compared

Minecraft Bedrock Edition Open-ended sandbox survival and building Flexible, ongoing sessions; exact group limit depends on setup Xbox version listed by Mojang Windows 10/11 Bedrock Bedrock players can join across supported Xbox and Windows platforms Purchase or subscription access varies by edition and region Java and Bedrock are separate compatibility tracks
Sea of Thieves Shared-world pirate adventure Voyage-length sessions with ongoing progression Xbox One support documented Windows 10 PC support documented Xbox One and Windows PC players share the same world Purchase or subscription access varies Check the current store listing and account requirements
Halo Infinite Competitive science-fiction first-person shooter Match-based multiplayer; longer sessions for organized groups Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S PC Multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression Multiplayer is free; campaign content is paid Campaign access is not the same as the free multiplayer offering

The best Xbox One and PC cross-play games

Minecraft Bedrock Edition — best overall

Mojang’s official Minecraft information lists cross-play between Windows 10/11 and Xbox for Bedrock Edition. Its Better Together FAQ explains that compatible players on those platforms can join one another in-game.

Bedrock is the right choice when an Xbox One player needs to join someone on a Windows PC. Mojang lists Java cross-play separately for Windows, Mac and Linux, so owning Minecraft on PC does not by itself identify the edition that works with Xbox. Confirm that every player is using Bedrock before creating the world.

Its open-ended building, exploration and survival loop also makes it the most adaptable option for mixed-age groups: players can share one world without committing to a fixed campaign or match schedule.

Sea of Thieves — best shared-world co-op adventure

Xbox Wire’s 2016 briefing explicitly stated that Sea of Thieves supported cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Microsoft’s current cross-platform multiplayer catalog continues to list the game.

The game is built around shared voyages, sailing, exploration and emergent encounters rather than isolated rounds. That makes it a strong pick for friends who want a longer co-op session and a world that can produce unscripted stories.

Because the original compatibility statement names Xbox One and Windows 10 PC, check the current store listing and account requirements for the editions your group owns.

Halo Infinite — best competitive shooter

Xbox Wire announced that Halo Infinite would support multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression across PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft’s cross-platform catalog lists it as cross-platform multiplayer.

The free multiplayer component is the relevant cross-play feature. Campaign content is a separate paid offering, so do not assume that buying or accessing the campaign gives every player the same multiplayer or co-op permissions. Verify the current rules for the mode you intend to play.

Choose Halo Infinite when the group wants structured competitive matches, familiar shooter controls and progression that can follow a player between supported platforms.

Grounded — best survival-crafting alternative

Microsoft lists Grounded under cross-platform multiplayer. Its premise centers on cooperative survival and crafting at miniature scale, with players gathering resources, building defenses and managing threats together.

It suits groups that want a shared survival project rather than a competitive match. Xbox One owners should confirm the exact console edition and the PC version in the current store listing before purchasing, since the catalog label alone does not identify every edition detail.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy - Xbox One
  • All 3 original Spyro games fully remastered in HD
  • Includes Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon
  • 100+ levels, remastered with breathtaking graphical updates and improved gameplay controls

Fortnite — best free-to-start competitive and social option

Microsoft’s cross-platform multiplayer catalog includes Fortnite. Its broad platform reach makes it the easiest recommendation when players want a free-to-start game with both competitive matches and social experiences.

Do not treat every Fortnite mode as having identical cross-play rules. Check Epic’s current documentation for the particular mode, matchmaking behavior and account requirements your group plans to use.

Minecraft Dungeons — best approachable action-RPG alternative

Microsoft lists Minecraft Dungeons as cross-platform multiplayer. Instead of Minecraft’s open-ended world, it uses compact missions, loot and action-RPG combat.

That mission structure is useful when everyone has a defined amount of time to play. It is also a gentler recommendation for players who want cooperative combat and progression without learning a large survival-crafting system.

How to choose among them

Choose Minecraft Bedrock for maximum flexibility

Pick Bedrock when the group spans ages, prefers building and exploration, or wants a world that can be revisited over many sessions.

Choose Sea of Thieves or Grounded for sustained co-op

Sea of Thieves emphasizes shared voyages and discovery. Grounded emphasizes gathering, crafting and surviving together. Both are better suited to groups that enjoy a continuing cooperative project.

Choose Halo Infinite or Fortnite for quick competitive play

Halo Infinite is the focused shooter choice, while Fortnite is the free-to-start option with a wider mixture of competitive and social modes.

Choose Minecraft Dungeons for defined missions

Its level-based structure works well when the group wants to complete a mission, collect upgrades and stop without leaving a persistent world in progress.

Cross-play checklist before you buy or install

  1. Identify the exact edition. For Minecraft, confirm Bedrock rather than Java. For Grounded and other catalog-listed games, confirm that the Xbox One and Windows PC editions are the ones your group owns.
  2. Check the intended mode. Halo’s free multiplayer, Halo’s campaign, Fortnite modes and other game modes can have different access or compatibility rules.
  3. Use the required account ecosystem. Follow the current Xbox, Microsoft or publisher account requirements shown by the game; platform ownership alone may not be sufficient.
  4. Compare access rights. Confirm whether each player needs a purchase, a subscription entitlement or only the free client, and check regional availability.
  5. Update every installation. Cross-play normally requires compatible, current versions on both platforms.
  6. Test a private or low-stakes session first. This catches edition, privacy, matchmaking and account problems before the group commits to a longer game.

Verdict

Minecraft Bedrock Edition is the safest all-purpose recommendation, Sea of Thieves is the standout shared-world adventure, and Halo Infinite is the strongest competitive shooter. Grounded, Fortnite and Minecraft Dungeons cover survival, free-to-start social play and shorter action-RPG missions. In every case, verify the edition and mode—not merely that the game appears on Xbox and PC.
