It follows Maya, a financially pressured young woman who takes a job at a new branch of Risa’s boba business. The game is designed so that serving customers, preparing drinks and surviving management scrutiny become part of the horror—not merely the backdrop.
What is The Boba Teashop: Refill?
Refill is a standalone story set in the world of the original The Boba Teashop. It introduces Maya as its protagonist and moves the action to a newly opened shop location. In an interview with Insider Gaming published October 1, 2026, the developers describe a game built around the collision between familiar service work and psychological horror.
Maya’s shifts involve taking orders, making drinks, cleaning the shop and dealing with customers. Reviews and management attention add another layer of pressure, turning ordinary workplace expectations into a source of unease.
How long has the game been in development?
Development began in 2025, according to the developers’ October 2026 interview. The interview does not provide a more precise start date or a total development duration, so it is not possible to state an exact number of months or years.

How the job becomes part of the horror
The central design idea is that players first learn the routines of a shift and then experience those routines being disrupted. The developers say balancing the work simulation with horror pacing has been one of the project’s main challenges.
Their explanation is direct: “We think it was when we realized that the job itself could become part of the psychological pressure rather than simply being the setting for the horror.” This is presented as a collective developer response, not a quote assigned to one named team member.

The routine tasks
- Taking customer orders
- Preparing boba drinks
- Cleaning the shop
- Responding to customer expectations
- Managing reviews and scrutiny from management
That structure gives the horror a practical rhythm. Players are expected to understand what a normal shift requires, making deviations in the shop’s atmosphere or events more consequential. The interview describes this as an intended design relationship between work simulation and psychological pressure; it does not establish how frequently specific scares occur or whether the game uses a particular gameplay system for them.
Presentation and cast
The developers describe a more elaborate presentation than the original game, including full voice acting, facial animation, more detailed cinematics and greater emphasis on character interactions. These are developer descriptions rather than independent technical or performance tests.
