For a newcomer, the clearest game route is Halo: Reach, then Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and Halo Infinite. That is a practical play order, not a complete, scene-by-scene chronology: some stories overlap, and Halo’s books, comics, and short fiction fill in many other periods.
First, know which Halo continuity you mean
The games and their associated extended fiction—including novels and comics—belong to Halo’s core continuity. The television series follows a separate branch called the Silver Timeline. It uses established characters and events but can diverge from the core story, so its events should not be inserted into a game-and-book timeline. Halo Waypoint and Xbox Wire both describe the show as separate from or branching away from core canon.

This guide maps the major eras and offers routes into the games and books. It is not an item-by-item chronology of every novel, comic, short story, game mode, or screen work; the official guides cited here do not establish one exhaustive order for all Halo media.
Halo’s core story timeline, by era
| Era or anchor | Key stories | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Forerunner history | Primordium and the history surrounding Zeta Halo | Provides an ancient-history anchor, long before the main human-Covenant conflict. |
| First contact and the early Covenant War | Contact Harvest; Silent Storm; Oblivion | Explores humanity’s first contact with the Covenant and early Master Chief/Blue Team stories. Silent Storm is set in the war’s first year. |
| Spartan program and the fall of Reach | The Fall of Reach; Halo: Reach | The novel establishes the Spartan program and leads toward the first game; the game is a prequel set just before it. |
| The first Halo ring and the original trilogy | Halo: Combat Evolved; The Flood; First Strike; Halo 2; Halo 3: ODST; Halo 3 | The central early Master Chief game saga. The novels expand or bridge game events; ODST overlaps Halo 2. |
| Postwar stories | The Kilo-Five trilogy and other expanded fiction | Follows the immediate aftermath of Halo 3, including ONI and former Covenant species. |
| Reclaimer-era and later conflicts | Halo 4; Halo 5: Guardians; Halo Wars 2; Shadows of Reach | Continues the modern game storyline and related Master Chief/Blue Team stories. Shadows of Reach is set in October 2559. |
| Banished occupation of Zeta Halo and after | The Rubicon Protocol; Halo Infinite; Halo: Edge of Dawn | The Rubicon Protocol covers the Banished occupation during the Master Chief’s absence. Edge of Dawn is set in 2560, after the Infinite campaign, and continues related threads. |
Ancient history: the Forerunners and Zeta Halo
Halo’s backstory reaches far earlier than the human-Covenant war. Halo Waypoint connects Primordium with Chakas’s journey across Zeta Halo, then called Gyre 11, and describes humans brought to that installation roughly 100,000 years ago. This is a useful anchor for the ancient era, not a complete placement of every Forerunner story.

Humanity meets the Covenant
Contact Harvest tells the story of humanity’s first contact with the Covenant and the beginning of the conflict. The official Halo Book Guide places Silent Storm in the war’s first year and groups it with Master Chief and Blue Team fiction; Oblivion is a natural next stop for readers following that early-war strand.
Reach leads into the first game
The Fall of Reach establishes the Spartan program and serves as a prelude to Combat Evolved. The game Halo: Reach is also a prequel, set just before the first game. This is one of the clearest examples of why a Halo timeline is not the same as a release list: the novel appeared shortly before the original game, while both are set earlier than its story.
The first ring, Earth, and the original trilogy
Combat Evolved begins the iconic game journey. The novel The Flood expands that period, and First Strike bridges the events of Combat Evolved and Halo 2. The game story then continues through Halo 2, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo 3. Because ODST overlaps Halo 2, a strict event-by-event sequence would require splitting one of the games; most players will find it easier to complete each campaign rather than switch back and forth.

After the Covenant War
The Kilo-Five books take place in the immediate aftermath of Halo 3 and examine postwar tensions involving ONI and former Covenant species. Other novels follow Master Chief and Blue Team across different points in their history. For example, Shadows of Reach is set in October 2559.

From the Reclaimer era to Zeta Halo
Halo 5: Guardians and Halo Wars 2 both precede Halo Infinite in the broader modern game storyline. Around the events at Zeta Halo, The Rubicon Protocol tells of the Banished occupation while the Master Chief is absent. Halo: Edge of Dawn follows the Infinite campaign in 2560 and continues threads from that novel.

- Halo: Reach
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Halo 2
- Halo 3: ODST
- Halo 3
- Halo 4
- Halo 5: Guardians
- Halo Infinite
This is a simplified, newcomer-friendly route through the central games, not a claim that every event occurs in precisely that order. In particular, ODST overlaps Halo 2. Xbox Wire identifies campaigns for Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Reach in Halo: The Master Chief Collection; its listed campaigns offer a convenient way to play much of the central saga. The route above also includes ODST, Halo 5: Guardians, and Infinite.
What order should you read the Halo books?
A focused route around the first game
- The Fall of Reach — the Spartan-program prelude.
- The Flood — an expanded telling of the Combat Evolved period.
- First Strike — the bridge between Combat Evolved and Halo 2.
Xbox Wire presents these as an approachable sequence around the first game. It is a useful starter route, not a full reading order for the wider fiction.
Follow a character or era instead of attempting everything
- Early Master Chief and Blue Team: Read Silent Storm, then Oblivion.
- Postwar politics: Choose the Kilo-Five books for stories set after Halo 3.
- Zeta Halo and Infinite: Read The Rubicon Protocol for events during the Banished occupation, then Halo: Edge of Dawn for a story set after the campaign.
- A wider range of characters and periods: Use the official Halo Book Guide’s groupings for strands such as Rion Forge, Alpha-Nine, Blue Team, Kilo-Five, and stories connected to Halo Infinite. Those categories help you pick a thread; they do not make up one master chronological order.
Where do Halo’s short stories fit?
Halo Waypoint describes the Waypoint Chronicles stories as standalone pieces set in different times and places, with some directly paralleling game events. The official guide lists Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One as a collection of over thirty short stories, along with additional lore material. Its variety makes it a way to explore more of the universe, but it is not one continuous chronological narrative.
Does the Halo TV show follow the game timeline?
No. The television series follows the Silver Timeline, a separate continuity from the game-and-book core. It draws on familiar characters and events but can take a different path. Treat it as its own branch rather than as another entry between the games or novels.
How to use a “complete” Halo timeline
“Complete” can mean a complete route through the main games, a reading order for one character, or an inventory of every licensed story. Those are different tasks. The official sources used for this guide establish major eras and useful game-and-book connections, but do not provide a single chronological catalogue of every Halo novel, comic, short story, game, and screen work.
Quick Recap
- Use release order when you want to experience the franchise as audiences first encountered it.
- Use the game route above when you want a clear introduction to the central playable story.
- Use character or era groupings in the Halo Book Guide to explore expanded fiction without assuming its categories are a strict timeline.
- If exact placement of a particular side story matters, consult a detailed specialist chronology and verify disputed placements against primary canon material; some works overlap rather than fit into a single uninterrupted sequence.
