In December 2016, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney argued that the Metaverse should be an open protocol built by many companies, not a virtual world controlled by one. Nearly a decade later, Epic’s planned Unreal Engine 6 offers the clearest test of that idea: the company says it wants content, code and economies to work across more games and engines. But that is a roadmap, not a finished, company-neutral Metaverse. Epic’s current effort is better described as an Epic-led interoperability program, with Fortnite still at its center.
What the 2016 DeanBeat article reported
Dean Takahashi’s GamesBeat feature was published on December 9, 2016, and the page now notes an update on June 18, 2025. It reported on Sweeney’s talk at the VRX virtual-reality conference and a follow-up interview. It was an account of a proposal and predictions—not an announcement that Epic had built an open Metaverse.
Sweeney’s vision bundled together several ideas: realistic digital people, shared social spaces, lighter AR and VR hardware, persistent virtual destinations, digital commerce, and infrastructure that multiple companies could use. He imagined games as only one part of a broader environment for socializing, work, entertainment and creation.
Digital people and social presence
Epic demonstrated a real-time Senua avatar from Hellblade, driven by a voice actress’s performance and developed with collaborators including Cubic Motion and 3Lateral. The point was not simply graphical detail: capturing a human performance could make a digital character’s expression and speech feel more present. Sweeney saw that kind of embodied interaction as important to social virtual spaces.

Glasses, persistence and commerce
Sweeney also anticipated lightweight glasses with very high-resolution displays that could serve some of the roles then filled by conventional screens. The article records his estimate of five to seven years; that was a forecast made in 2016, not a current product timetable or a verified prediction. He pictured persistent places where people could meet and conduct business, and expected digital goods, careers and entertainment to become economically meaningful.
He also acknowledged that virtual spaces would inherit real-world and internet harms, including harassment, crime, exploitation and privacy risks. That warning matters because sensors capable of capturing facial movement, gaze or voice can make a more convincing avatar while also creating sensitive data.
What “open” meant—and what it did not
The central argument was about who sets the rules. Sweeney contrasted a Metaverse governed by a single company with one built on protocols that many firms could implement. In his view, users and businesses should not be locked into one company’s identity, data, commerce and access systems.
Those terms are easy to blur, but they describe different degrees of openness:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- An open protocol gives others rules or specifications they can implement.
- An open platform may welcome outside creators while its owner still controls hosting, identity, discovery, payments and participation rules.
- Interoperable content means a particular asset or entitlement can function in more than one experience; it does not necessarily make accounts, inventories or social connections portable.
- Decentralized ownership is a stronger claim: control is not concentrated in one platform operator. Merely supporting shared file formats does not establish it.
Sweeney’s 2016 discussion moved between these ambitions. They should not be treated as synonyms or as proof that Epic had already delivered any of them.
The infrastructure ideas have changed
The 2016 article mentions blockchain as a possible way to support security and privacy in e-commerce, distributed storage modeled on the InterPlanetary File System, public-key cryptography and a Metaverse destination analogous to a website. These were ideas Sweeney floated, not evidence that Fortnite was built on blockchain or IPFS.
Epic’s current UE6 roadmap emphasizes a different set of mechanisms: open specifications, Verse APIs, asset conventions, documentation, and established formats such as glTF and USD where they meet Epic’s needs. A file format can help move data, but it does not by itself settle what an object means, how it behaves, who owns it, or whether another platform will accept it.
Fortnite became the practical test bed
Epic’s most tangible progress toward a creator economy has been inside Fortnite. Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) is a PC application for designing, developing and publishing experiences directly into Fortnite. It combines Unreal creation tools with Fortnite’s multiplayer and backend services and its audience. That makes it a concrete creator platform, but not a neutral protocol: publication and participation still happen within Epic’s environment and under its rules.

When Epic introduced UEFN and Creator Economy 2.0 in 2023, it said eligible creators would share a pool equal to 40% of net revenue from Fortnite’s Item Shop and most real-money Fortnite purchases. The pool is distributed according to Epic’s engagement and eligibility rules; it is not a guaranteed income or a direct 40% royalty on each creator’s island. This is a real mechanism for paying creators, while remaining an Epic-defined economy tied to Fortnite activity.

Epic’s developer page currently says the company has paid more than $900 million to third-party Fortnite developers. That is Epic’s own cumulative marketing claim, not an independently audited measure of creator income or proof that payouts are evenly distributed.
Fab and portable assets
Epic announced Fab as a combined marketplace for assets associated with the Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab, Quixel Bridge and ArtStation Marketplace, and announced an 88% creator revenue share. Those are the terms and positioning in Epic’s announcement; marketplace terms may change. Fab’s cross-tool ambitions should not be mistaken for a promise that every asset works in every engine or game. Format support, license conditions, rigging, shaders and the receiving platform all affect whether an asset can be reused.
Epic’s announcement is available in its UEFN, Creator Economy 2.0 and Fab overview. Asset availability can broaden a creator’s options, but a marketplace is not itself a shared identity or economy across independent worlds.

UE6 is the strongest continuation of the vision
Epic’s planned Unreal Engine 6 is the clearest current bridge between Sweeney’s protocol ambition and a concrete engineering program. Epic says it intends to unify Unreal Engine 5 and UEFN, make Verse the foundation of its future gameplay programming model, and improve portability of content, code and economies across games, ecosystems and engines. It also says Fortnite cosmetics are the first major proof point for portability: the goal is for Fortnite entitlements to work in other games and for outfits created for other games to work in Fortnite.
These are intended capabilities, not evidence of universal portability. Epic’s stated schedule targets UE6 Early Access at the end of 2027, with full release 12–18 months afterward. Both the scope and timing remain subject to the roadmap. A cosmetic that can be represented in another game is also a narrower interoperability achievement than moving a player’s identity, progression, social graph or gameplay inventory.
Epic says it will use glTF and USD as first-class formats where suitable and publish open specifications for systems without an adequate existing standard. That is more specific than the 2016 infrastructure sketches, but standards only work when other developers adopt them and agree on shared meanings, versions and behavior. Materials, animation rigs, scripting, entitlements, licensing, security and runtime support all need compatible treatment too.

There is a credible case that Epic is trying to make parts of its ecosystem easier for others to use. The UE6 plan explicitly invokes open specifications and cross-engine portability, while Epic is moving some capabilities from Fortnite toward engine-level systems. A July 2026 report described a Unity-and-Unreal integration demonstration with synchronized physics, lighting and input. The report said the capability was not yet live in Fortnite and that early access was expected in 2027; a demonstration is not production deployment or broad adoption. PC Gamer’s account of the demonstration makes that distinction clear.
The counterargument is that Epic remains the central operator of the practical experience. Fortnite is the audience and distribution center; Epic sets platform rules, creator eligibility, approval processes, discovery and monetization. UE6 is not yet generally available, and the portability Epic describes is selective and staged. Publishing a specification can invite independent implementations, but does not guarantee that competing platforms will adopt it or that users can leave without losing purchases and connections.
So the fairest description is an Epic-led interoperable ecosystem in development. It is more than a closed game if outside tools and engines can genuinely implement shared systems; it is not yet the company-neutral protocol Sweeney described in 2016.

The unresolved problems are governance, not just graphics
Identity, privacy and safety
A shared avatar can make presence feel personal, but face, voice, gaze and movement data can reveal more than a username. Any system that shares identity across spaces needs clear choices about consent, retention, biometric inference, impersonation and children’s privacy. Openness does not mean the absence of moderation: independent worlds still need enforceable rules, appeal paths, age protections and ways to respond to abuse.
Ownership, licensing and portability
A user may own a license to use an asset without owning the right to export, modify or resell it. Cross-world portability needs clear rules for creator attribution, copyright claims, takedowns and what happens to purchases when a game or service closes. A portable cosmetic is comparatively manageable; an item that changes another game’s combat or progression can break balance or conflict with that world’s design.

Economics and platform dependence
Creator revenue depends on the size and activity of the audience, how discovery works, the platform’s payout formula and which purchases count as eligible revenue. The distinction between gross and net receipts matters. If creators depend on one company’s discovery system and policy choices, a nominally broader creator economy can still leave them exposed to unilateral changes.
Hardware and access
The glasses Sweeney envisioned have to solve display brightness and resolution, battery life, heat, weight, field of view, latency, comfort, prescription lenses, outdoor visibility and cost together. The 2016 article does not establish that a particular lightweight, high-resolution device will meet those constraints on a near-term schedule. A persistent virtual environment also needs to work for people without specialized headsets.
What would show that the open vision is becoming real?
The decisive evidence will be use beyond Epic’s own products. Useful milestones would include independent engines implementing published specifications; assets that work outside Fortnite without bespoke conversion; players retaining meaningful entitlements or identity across independently operated games; and creators able to reach audiences without making Fortnite their primary dependency. Users should also have credible ways to move their work and purchases when a service changes or closes.
These tests are more demanding than a technical demo or a shared file format. They would show whether Epic’s standards distribute control and choice, rather than simply extending the reach of Epic’s tools.

The verdict on Sweeney’s 2016 forecast
Sweeney’s proposal has moved from a broad, partly speculative Metaverse manifesto toward a more concrete program centered on Unreal Engine, Fortnite and creator tools. UEFN and Epic’s payout systems put creation and commerce into practice; UE6 is intended to push selected content and systems across a wider boundary. Yet the underlying test remains unresolved: whether other companies will adopt the standards and whether users can carry meaningful parts of their digital lives between independently governed spaces.
That makes the 2016 vision neither fulfilled nor simply disproved. Epic is building toward interoperability, but the open Metaverse will be established by what other platforms implement—and by how much choice, portability and control users actually gain.
