Short answer: The Elder Scrolls Online saw a sharp increase in Steam’s average concurrent players in April 2026, but its Steam average was lower by September. Those figures show a temporary bump in one platform’s data—not proof of a lasting, all-platform renaissance.
What ESO’s public player-count figures actually measure
The readily available monthly figures from SteamCharts and Tracker Network describe concurrent players on Steam. They are not counts of monthly active users, registered accounts, or everyone playing ESO across PC launchers and consoles. Tracker Network explicitly limits its figures to Steam players.
That distinction matters: an average concurrent count describes how many players are online at the same time on average over a stated period. It cannot be converted into a total player population without additional data. The sources cited here do not establish ESO’s current total population across platforms.
What changed on Steam in 2026?
Both trackers show a notable April increase followed by lower monthly averages by September. Their figures are close, but not identical, so each should be read as that tracker’s own series rather than combined into a single estimate.

| Calendar month | SteamCharts average concurrent players | Tracker Network average concurrent players | Month-over-month change |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 2026 | 11,890.92 | 11,867 | SteamCharts: +23.40%; Tracker Network: +23.1% |
| September 2026 | 7,367.55 | 7,376 | SteamCharts: -17.10%; Tracker Network: -16.8% |
These are monthly average concurrent Steam players, not all-platform totals. Each percentage compares that tracker’s month with its own preceding month. The gap between the April and September averages is consistent across both sources: the April lift did not become a steady upward climb through September.
Does the April spike prove ESO is having a renaissance?
No—not on its own. The trackers establish that Steam concurrency rose in April, but they do not identify why it rose. A single monthly increase, followed by declines, is not enough to demonstrate sustained growth, and Steam-only data cannot establish what happened on other PC launchers or consoles.

The historical Steam peak is a different metric again. SteamCharts lists an all-time concurrent peak of 49,061, while Tracker Network lists 49,142; neither surfaced page specifies the peak date. Those are tracker-attributed records, not estimates of today’s player count and not comparable to a monthly average.
A stronger case for a broad revival would require evidence beyond this short Steam trend—for example, a dated official all-platform population figure or a sustained increase over a longer period. No such cross-platform total is established by the sources cited here.

What the studio has said about ESO’s future
In its statement titled “Continuing to Grow ESO With You,” the ESO team described a seasonal model, player-requested features and changes, and work on new content through 2027 and beyond. The statement expresses the studio’s intention to continue developing and growing the game; it does not report a measured increase in players.
That makes the studio’s outlook relevant context, but not population evidence. Plans for future content and a desire to grow ESO should not be confused with a verified current player count.

What can you conclude if you’re deciding whether ESO is active?
The public Steam data shows thousands of average concurrent players in the reported months, with a pronounced April 2026 rise and lower averages by September. That is evidence of activity on Steam, but it cannot answer how many people are playing across ESO as a whole or establish whether the game is growing overall.
Likewise, claims about lifetime accounts, total registered players, or all-platform activity should not be compared directly with Steam’s concurrent-player averages. They measure different things. Without a current, comparable cross-platform figure, the most accurate verdict is limited: ESO had a Steam concurrency bump, but the available numbers do not prove a durable renaissance.
