The Emails Behind Fortnite’s 2020 App Store Exile—and What Happened Since

Epic’s request for alternative payments and an iOS storefront preceded a deliberate payment switch, Fortnite’s 2020 App Store removal, and a mixed court ruling. Availability has since changed by region.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney’s June 30, 2020, email to Apple executives asked for two changes: permission to process Fortnite purchases outside Apple’s payment system, and permission to run an Epic Games Store on iOS. The messages exposed a dispute over who controlled both payments and distribution. But the emails did not themselves remove Fortnite: Epic’s deliberate activation of an unapproved direct-payment option on August 13 triggered Apple’s removal of the game. That exile was real, but it was not permanent or universal; as of August 2026, availability depends on region and distribution channel.

What Epic asked Apple for

In an email sent to Apple executives on June 30, 2020, Sweeney sought permission for Epic to offer competing payment processing without Apple’s associated fee. He also asked to distribute an Epic Games Store on iOS, with installation and update access comparable to the App Store. The request therefore challenged two connected parts of Apple’s platform: who processed purchases and who controlled app distribution.

The correspondence and its context are set out in the court record. Read the court filing describing Epic’s request.

Why Apple called it a special deal

Apple characterized Epic’s proposal as a request for a private exception: Epic wanted to keep distributing Fortnite through Apple while bypassing rules that applied to other developers. That was Apple’s framing, not an uncontested finding about Epic’s motive. Epic said it was seeking open competition and fair treatment, not a favor available only to itself. Apple’s “side deal” argument was reported in its public response.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The distinction mattered. A public policy change would alter the rules for developers generally; a private exemption would let Epic avoid those rules while retaining access to Apple’s store. The disagreement was about platform control as well as the historical 30% commission structure, whose rates and programs have varied. Epic argued that Apple’s payment and distribution rules restricted competition. Apple argued that centralized rules supported security, fraud prevention, refunds, privacy, and platform integrity.

Epic’s plan moved beyond negotiation

The later court record supports describing the August confrontation as deliberate. Epic prepared a technical change, litigation strategy, and publicity campaign before activating direct payments. In the district court’s account, Epic set a rough timeline and intentionally followed it; the company was not surprised by the possibility that Apple would enforce its rules.

  1. June 30, 2020: Sweeney asks Apple for alternative payments and an Epic store on iOS.
  2. August 13: Epic activates the direct-payment option in Fortnite; Apple removes the game from the App Store.
  3. August 17: Epic seeks emergency relief in court.
  4. August 28: Apple terminates Epic’s developer-program account after the deadline it had given Epic.

The chronology and the court’s findings are in the district court judgment and the judgment copy. Epic’s emergency filing is available in the court record.

August 13: the payment switch

Epic deliberately enabled an unapproved payment mechanism inside Fortnite. It gave players a direct-payment route for V-Bucks, alongside or instead of Apple’s required in-app-purchase option, and offered a lower price for direct purchases. That let Epic make its case tangible: a purchase routed through Epic could cost less than one routed through Apple. But lower prices did not establish that savings would automatically reach consumers in every transaction.

The change also created the concrete breach Epic needed to challenge Apple’s rules in court. It was not simply a complaint about fees or an accidental software change; Epic put the alternative into production, knowing Apple could respond by removing the app. Apple’s proposed findings describe the activation and payment mechanism: court document on the direct-payment change.

Why Apple removed Fortnite

Apple’s App Store rules required apps selling digital goods or services to use Apple’s in-app-purchase system. Apple said Fortnite’s direct-payment option violated those rules and Epic’s developer agreement, and removed the game within hours of its activation. The immediate cause was the payment change; the June emails explain the dispute that led to it, not the enforcement trigger itself. The removal is described in the court judgment.

Removal and account termination were separate steps. After the App Store listing disappeared, existing players who already had the game installed were not in the same position as new players trying to download it: an installed copy could keep running for a time, but normal App Store updates were no longer available. Apple later terminated Epic’s developer-program account. That raised a separate concern about Unreal Engine and other Epic products; the court treated those interests as distinct from Fortnite.

From private emails to #FreeFortnite

Epic quickly turned the dispute into a public campaign. It released a parody of Apple’s famous “1984” advertisement, presenting Apple as a controlling authority and Epic as the challenger. Epic also promoted #FreeFortnite and a related tournament. The sequence was a private request, Apple’s refusal, a payment switch, removal, litigation, and public mobilization—not a sudden spat over an app review. A timeline of the campaign and dispute.

For Epic, the campaign linked its legal argument to the game’s audience: if Apple controlled distribution and payment, a developer could not freely reach players on its own terms. Apple’s position was that rules for payments and distribution were part of operating a secure, consistent platform. Both companies had strategic interests at stake, and the public campaign did not settle which account should prevail in law.

What the court decided—and what it did not

The 2021 district-court result was mixed, not a clean victory for either company.

  • Contract: The court found that Epic intentionally breached its agreement with Apple by activating the direct-payment option.
  • Antitrust: The court rejected Epic’s central federal antitrust claim against Apple’s iOS distribution system; it did not establish Epic’s broad monopoly theory as a finding.
  • Payment revenue: Epic was ordered to pay Apple a percentage of revenue collected through Epic’s direct-payment system during the relevant period.
  • Anti-steering: Apple was enjoined from enforcing certain restrictions that prevented developers from directing users to alternative purchasing options.

The court did not order the broad restructuring of iOS that Epic sought, nor did Apple retain every challenged anti-steering restriction. The judgment is available here.

Was Fortnite really killed on iOS?

“Killed on iOS” captures the 2020 rupture: Apple’s removal ended Fortnite’s ordinary App Store distribution, and the game could not receive routine App Store updates during the exile. It overstates the case if taken to mean Apple made the game permanently impossible to play on every Apple device. Previously installed versions and cloud-gaming routes were not equivalent to a current native App Store installation, and later legal and platform changes altered availability.

As of August 2026, Epic’s support pages say Fortnite is available on iPhone and iPad through the App Store in most regions, with regional exceptions and alternative-store options, including routes in the EU and Japan. Epic’s mobile page lists iOS and iPadOS availability in the United States and European Union. The route depends on country and device, so check Epic’s current iPhone and iPad availability guidance, mobile installation instructions, and Fortnite mobile page for your region.

What the emails reveal about the platform fight

The important conflict was larger than whether one game could stay in one store. Epic wanted control over payments, distribution, updates, and its relationship with customers; Apple defended a system in which it set the terms for both app access and in-app transactions. Epic’s planned breach created leverage and a public test of those rules, but it also weakened its claim to emergency relief. The emails mark the negotiation’s end; the payment switch made the dispute unavoidable.
