It is a separate, newer application that replaced NMM as Nexus Mods’ official manager. NMM is now a legacy program, while Vortex is the supported first-party option. The separate Nexus Mods App was discontinued in January 2026 and should not be confused with either product.

Nexus announced the end of official account/API support for legacy NMM in its legacy API announcement. That did not turn NMM into Vortex; it marked the practical end of NMM as Nexus’s supported product.
What Nexus Mod Manager was
NMM was the older official Nexus Mods utility for downloading and installing mods, particularly popular with earlier versions of Skyrim, Fallout, Oblivion and other Bethesda games. Its workflow was comparatively direct: download an archive, install it, enable or disable it, and let the manager place files in the game directory.
That simplicity suited small or moderate mod lists. As lists grew, however, direct installation made it harder to see which mod supplied a file, undo experiments cleanly, maintain separate setups, or express complicated load-order relationships. NMM should therefore be understood as Vortex’s predecessor, not as an old build of the same application.

Why Nexus replaced NMM
Modern mod lists can involve hundreds of archives, plugins, patches, script extenders, frameworks and game-specific installers. Nexus needed a manager that could expose conflicts, automate repeatable tasks and integrate more deeply with its website and services. Nexus describes Vortex as a modern manager informed by lessons from both NMM and Mod Organizer; its original Vortex listing is at Nexus Mods.
The change was evolutionary in purpose but not a rename in software architecture. Vortex introduced a different workflow and data model, so an existing NMM setup may need to be recreated rather than perfectly imported.
What Vortex changed
Dashboard and integrated workflow
Vortex brings games, mods, plugins, downloads, save games, tools and profiles into a central interface. Its goal is to automate routine work while leaving advanced users room to inspect and override decisions. The project’s official repository documents the feature set at GitHub.
Sorting and conflict rules
Vortex can sort plugins and lets users create rules describing which item should load before or after another. It also surfaces warnings that need attention. Sorting resolves known ordering relationships; it does not test gameplay compatibility, supply missing patches, repair a bad installer choice, or make script-extender versions match the game.

Profiles
Separate profiles can hold different mod configurations—for example, a lightly modded main game, a graphics-heavy setup and a testing list. Profiles do not automatically isolate every save, configuration file, external tool or root-folder component. Check the game extension and each mod’s instructions before assuming complete separation.
Staging and deployment
Vortex keeps downloaded archives and a staging area separate from the files deployed to the game. Installing an archive, enabling a mod, deploying its files and launching the game are related but distinct actions.
- Hard-link deployment generally requires the staging folder and game directory to be on the same volume.
- Permissions, antivirus tools, cloud-sync folders and launcher restrictions can block deployment.
- Changing deployment methods or paths may require a fresh redeployment.
This managed model can make changes easier to inspect and reverse, but it does not make a setup invulnerable.
Extensions and game coverage
Vortex supports hundreds of games through extensions, but “supported” can mean different depths of integration. The Vortex GitHub README says “over 250 games,” while a Nexus manager page advertises “over 500”; these catalog counts are not a fixed technical limit and may include games with only basic file handling. A mature extension may provide load-order and installer features, while another may do little more than manage files. See Nexus’s manager page for its current presentation.

Nexus integration and Collections
Vortex is closely tied to Nexus downloads and Collections. Nexus Premium advertises uncapped speeds, instant downloads, multi-threaded downloads and one-click collection installation, alongside ad-free browsing and preferred server selection; details are on the Premium page. Premium is optional: Vortex itself is presented as open-source GPL-3.0 software, available through GitHub and Nexus. The Nexus signup page displayed Premium from £2.99 per month when checked, but price, tax, currency and promotions vary by location and billing term; verify the current amount at signup. Premium speeds up downloads and collection setup; it does not fix incompatible mods or bad load orders.
What happened to the Nexus Mods App?
The Nexus Mods App was a separate multiplatform project, intended in part to address platforms such as Linux or SteamOS. Nexus’s FAQ, updated January 14, 2026, says development stopped and efforts were redirected toward Vortex: official FAQ.
The App was not a new name for NMM, and its cancellation did not discontinue Vortex or revive NMM. That FAQ stated that Linux was not currently supported by Vortex at the time of the update. Anyone on Linux or SteamOS should verify a later official announcement rather than assume that the App’s compatibility carried over.
Can old NMM still be used?
An old installation may still launch, manage manually imported archives or perform functions that do not require Nexus connectivity. That is different from being supported. Nexus said users on the last official release would no longer be able to log in after the API change, although manual downloads and imports could continue.

- Do not start a new serious mod list in legacy NMM.
- Treat existing NMM installations as legacy projects and preserve their archives and settings.
- Community-maintained NMM forks are separate projects, not official Nexus support.

MO2 is an independent open-source project hosted at GitHub, not a Nexus product. Choose it when maximum visibility and control matter more than a guided Nexus workflow; choose Vortex when convenience and first-party integration matter more.

- Back up saves first. Copy save files and important configuration files before changing managers.
- Record the current state. Export or write down the mod list, load order, enabled plugins and installer choices.
- Preserve archives. Keep downloaded mod files and note anything installed manually.
- Inventory unmanaged files. Pay special attention to script extenders, DLL plugins, ReShade or ENB files, root-folder utilities and custom configuration files.
- Stop legacy deployment carefully. Disable or remove NMM-managed files only after documenting the existing state.
- Install Vortex from an official source. Use Nexus Mods or the official repository, then identify the exact game installation.
- Set locations deliberately. Choose download and staging folders with adequate space; use the same volume as the game if relying on hard links.
- Reinstall or import in batches. Start with frameworks, script extenders, address-library-type requirements and major patches, then add ordinary mods.
- Review requirements and installers. Recheck every FOMOD choice and dependency rather than assuming NMM’s previous choices transferred.
- Deploy and inspect warnings. Resolve missing dependencies, conflict rules, permissions and path errors before launching.
- Test separately. Use a backed-up save or test profile, then add the remainder of the list gradually.
Migration is often a mod-list recreation, not a guaranteed one-click conversion. If the result fails, stop changing files, verify or reinstall the base game through its launcher, restore backups, check Vortex’s staging and deployment paths, reinstall core dependencies first and test a small set before rebuilding the full list.
Limitations and common failure modes
“Vortex broke my game”
The manager may have exposed or deployed a problematic mod, but likely causes include a missing master, incompatible game update, incorrect FOMOD choice, script-extender mismatch, bad load order, unmanaged root file, permissions failure or an unresolved mod conflict. Managed deployment and profiles improve reversibility; they do not guarantee a working list.
Root-folder installations
Script extenders, DLL loaders, engine fixes, ReShade, ENB-style files, BepInEx components and separately launched utilities may not belong in the normal data directory or be managed by Vortex. Follow the mod’s installation instructions and confirm what the extension supports.

Game editions and launchers
Steam, GOG, Epic, Microsoft Store/Game Pass and publisher launchers can expose different executables, permissions and script-extender behavior. Identify the exact edition before following a guide. MO2’s documented Windows Store/Game Pass limitation is one example of why edition matters.
Sorting is not universal compatibility
Automatic sorting expresses known ordering relationships. It cannot test scripts, correct an installation, create a missing compatibility patch or validate an external tool.
Final verdict
NMM was the legacy predecessor. Vortex is Nexus Mods’ current official manager and a substantially redesigned successor, not a renamed executable. For a new or convenience-focused setup, Vortex is the sensible first-party choice. Advanced Bethesda modders, users following MO2-specific guides and people who want maximum file-priority visibility may prefer MO2. Existing NMM users should preserve their data and migrate deliberately rather than build a new long-term setup in legacy software.
