But a tier alone does not make a team: rarity, who you can actually field, fighter roles, and the mode you are playing all matter. Here’s how to use the guide’s rankings without mistaking them for an official or universally confirmed list.
How to read this THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK tier list
THE KING OF FIGHTERS AFK is a mobile idle RPG with pixel-art fighters and strategic 5-vs-5 brawls, according to Netmarble’s official game overview. Pocket Gamer’s editorial guide divides its rankings into Legends (LG) and Uniques (UQ), rather than treating every fighter as directly interchangeable. Its page displays “Updated on October 3rd, 2026 – Version: 1.12.0 – Added: Zero (Original), Whip.” That is the guide’s update label, not proof that every ranking shown was freshly verified for that version.
In fact, the captured ranking rows are exposed through older June and August snapshots linked from the guide. Use those placements as an attributed reference, not as a fully confirmed version 1.12.0 leaderboard or an official Netmarble ranking. Pocket Gamer also notes that players early in progression may need to rely on Unique fighters before they can reliably summon enough Legends.
Legendary fighter rankings in Pocket Gamer’s guide
The guide’s accessible ranking text places these fighters in its highest Legends tier. The list is useful for shortlist-building, but its older snapshot basis means it should not be read as a verified current ordering.

These are guide placements, not evidence that every fighter in a higher row will outperform every fighter below it in every roster or mode. The names can also be misleading without their style and rarity: for example, Legendary Athena (KOF ’98 Style) is distinct from Unique Athena (KOF XI Style).
Unique fighters to consider early
Pocket Gamer’s captured guide identifies Iori, Athena, Malin, Vice, Leana, Dolores, Bao, Hwa, Mature, Tizoc, Xiangfei, Chang, Goro, and Lucky as its better Unique options, with a separate lower group. It does not make those fighters substitutes for the Legends list: rarity and the fighters available to your account are part of the decision.

If your roster is still developing, prioritize useful available fighters rather than waiting for a perfect Legendary lineup. The guide advises against leveling every option beyond what is necessary, which can help avoid spreading investment too thin while you are still assembling a team.
Standout roles and team synergies
Orochi Leona and Orochi Iori
The guide highlights Orochi Leona and Orochi Iori near the top of its Legendary rankings. It attributes an ally ATK effect to Leona’s Owned Effect and healing to Iori’s effect. Those are guide descriptions, not independently verified performance tests; consider how the effects fit the rest of your lineup rather than assuming the ranking alone makes either fighter an automatic choice.

Athena as a buffer
Pocket Gamer describes Legendary Athena (KOF ’98 Style) as a strong buffer. If you are weighing Athena, check the exact style and rarity shown in your roster: the guide lists a separate Unique Athena (KOF XI Style), so “Athena” by itself is not a precise team-building recommendation.
KUSANAGI and healing support
The guide says KUSANAGI consumes health for damage and recommends pairing him with a healer. It also ties additional sustain to reaching 7 stars. Treat that as progression-specific advice from the guide: the value of the pairing depends on whether you have the healer and investment available.

Choose for the mode you are playing
A recommendation for a 5-vs-5 brawl is not automatically a recommendation for every formation in the game. Netmarble’s April 16, 2026 newsroom update said Story Stage deployments increased “from 5 to 9,” with additional slots unlocking as players progressed through stages. A separate Netmarble release describes decks and formations built from five to 25 fighters. Those descriptions concern different formation contexts and are tied to dated game material; check the current in-game mode and unlocked slots before applying a compact battle lineup to a larger deployment.
For a 5-vs-5 team, focus on which fighters work together and what roles your roster needs. For a larger Story Stage formation or deck, evaluate the broader pool and the slots available in that mode rather than simply adding five names from a tier list.

A practical way to build around the rankings
- Start with the mode. Identify whether you are selecting for a 5-vs-5 brawl, Story Stage deployment, or a broader deck or formation.
- Filter by rarity and availability. Separate Legends from Uniques, then consider which fighters you can field and develop now.
- Cover team roles. Look for damage, healing, and buffs that suit your roster. If using KUSANAGI, account for the guide’s stated health cost by pairing him with healing support when possible.
- Check the exact fighter style. Confirm both rarity and style, especially for names such as Athena that appear in more than one form.
- Invest selectively. The guide’s advice is not to level every option more than needed; concentrate resources on fighters serving your current lineup and progression.
- Reassess when the roster or mode changes. New summons, upgrades, stars, and unlocked formation slots can change which available combination makes sense.
What the tier list can—and cannot—tell you
Pocket Gamer’s list is a starting point for comparing fighters, not a universal best-team recipe. Its separate rarity groups, older ranking snapshots, and character-specific role notes all matter. Your roster, upgrades, intended mode, and ability to field supporting roles affect whether a high-ranked fighter is the right pick for you. Netmarble’s own overview frames the game around creating a team strategically, rather than prescribing one fixed lineup.
