Financing and distribution
Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment are co-financing the movie. Nintendo is providing more than 50% of the financing, while Sony is responsible for worldwide theatrical distribution. These arrangements were stated in Nintendo’s official announcement and reflect the film’s current production structure.
What is the Zelda movie about?
Nintendo describes the project as based on its The Legend of Zelda action-adventure game series. The company has not identified Breath of the Wild, Ocarina of Time, or any other individual game as the source material. It has also released no official synopsis, story details, setting, villain information, or explanation of how the film will handle the series’ recurring mythology.
Accordingly, claims that the movie adapts a particular installment should be treated as unconfirmed. The only established creative basis is the series as a whole.

How the project reached its current announcement
Nintendo and Arad Productions first announced the film’s development in November 2023. That earlier announcement established the partnership and the project’s connection to the game series; Nintendo’s September 2026 announcement subsequently supplied the final title, current release date, confirmed leads, and production details. The latest announcement should be used when older reports give a different date or incomplete cast information.

What to play while waiting
The movie is officially based on the broader The Legend of Zelda series, so revisiting the games is the most direct way to explore the worlds, characters, and ideas that form its source material. Nintendo has not said that any one game is a movie tie-in, and no movie-specific game, merchandise, disc, or streaming product has been announced.

For changes to the title, date, cast, or production credits, check Nintendo’s official film announcement. Nintendo’s earlier November 2023 development announcement provides the original project context. A Nintendo Life guide can provide ongoing reported context, but its unconfirmed cast reports should not be read as official credits.
