Free League Publishing’s combined The One Ring and The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E campaign had raised over $2.5 million by October 1, 2026, according to a report reproducing the publisher’s press release. The available reporting does not confirm the exact $2.6 million figure in the original headline. The campaign funds six books: an expansion, a bestiary and revised core rules for each game line.
What the BackerKit campaign includes
This is a Free League tabletop role-playing game campaign, not a Wizards of the Coast Dungeons & Dragons product line. It combines two Middle-earth RPG systems, each with three announced volumes. Free League’s campaign page describes the books and their features.

Expansions and adversaries
Free League describes the expansions as covering Gondor and Rohan, with locations, campaign frameworks and adventure hooks. The announcement also lists new character options and rules for mounted combat and travel by horse, boat, river and sea. The bestiaries are presented as collections of adversaries, including Ringwraiths, Balrogs, Ents, Woses and Oliphants. These are publisher descriptions of the planned books, not independent assessments of their contents.
How the revised rules differ
The revised The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying 5E Core Rules move from 5E to the 5.5 ruleset and are described by Free League as fully standalone. That means the campaign presents the revised core book as a complete rules entry point; it is not described as requiring the earlier core book. The One Ring remains its own game system rather than another name for the 5E adaptation.

Both revised core rulebooks add Strider Mode, a solo-play option designed for adventures without a Loremaster. Free League says previously released supplements remain compatible with their respective game lines. Owners who bought either current core-rules PDF through Free League Unbound or DriveThruRPG are stated to receive the revised digital version automatically once it is complete. The campaign also lists official virtual tabletop modules: The One Ring for Foundry and the 5E game for Roll20.
Funding, campaign timing and shipping
A report dated October 1, 2026 said the campaign had passed $2.5 million, making it Free League’s most-funded campaign at that point. It does not establish an exact $2.6 million total. Earlier, TechTimes reported more than $1.75 million from over 7,200 backers during the campaign’s first 26 hours; that is an early milestone, not a current total. The campaign was reported as scheduled to close on October 15, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. EDT, with shipping estimated for October 2027. Those dates are campaign schedule information and may change. The two lines are related by setting, but they are not interchangeable. The practical choice is whether you want The One Ring’s own rules or the 5E adaptation, and whether the revised standalone 5.5-compatible core book suits your table. Existing owners can also weigh the stated compatibility of earlier supplements and whether Strider Mode’s solo support matters to them. The campaign materials do not establish that one line is better than the other.
