The Mortuary Assistant crashes on PC for several possible reasons, so there isn’t one fix that works for everyone. Start by updating the game and verifying its Steam files; then check drivers, overlays, graphics settings, and your PC’s resources. These steps are safer than reinstalling and help narrow down the cause.
Quick fixes to try first
- Restart Steam and your PC.
- Let Steam install any pending update for The Mortuary Assistant.
- Verify the game files in Steam.
- Install pending Windows updates and update your graphics driver through NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s official software or support site. Restart the PC afterward.
- Temporarily disable overlays and non-essential background programs, then test the game again.
- If the crash seems graphics-related, try windowed or borderless mode, a lower resolution, and a moderate graphics preset. Restart the game after changing settings.
Test the same part of the game that caused the crash. If the problem remains, use the sections below to narrow it down rather than changing several things at once.
Match the crash to the likely cause

These are troubleshooting leads, not confirmed diagnoses. A crash can have more than one cause.

Update the game before changing more settings
In Steam, open Library, right-click The Mortuary Assistant, and select Properties → Updates. Allow Steam to download pending updates. If an update finishes but the game still behaves as if it is on an older build, restart Steam and check again.

Updating matters for this game in particular: the July 2024 Definitive Edition announcement cited stability fixes and performance improvements. A related July 2024 hotfix addressed crashes triggered by changing graphics settings to Medium or below. That was a fix for a specific issue at the time; it does not mean Medium settings always crash, or that every current crash has the same cause.
Verify the Steam installation
Corrupted or incomplete files can stop a game from launching or cause instability. Steam recommends verifying files as a standard troubleshooting step. In the Steam client:
- Open Library.
- Right-click The Mortuary Assistant and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish.
- Restart Steam, launch the game, and retry the situation that previously caused the crash.
Steam may report that all files were validated or reacquire one or more files. Validation alone doesn’t prove that the crash is fixed; test the game afterward. If your client uses an older layout, the equivalent section may be called Local Files. See Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance.

Install pending Windows updates, then update the graphics driver using the official channel for your GPU: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Restart Windows after installation and test the game before trying more disruptive repairs. Steam also recommends current Windows and computer drivers for games that fail to launch.
A newer driver can occasionally introduce a game-specific regression. If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, testing the previous stable driver may be a reasonable advanced step. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities; use the GPU maker’s own software or support page.

Rule out overlays and background conflicts
Overlays, recording tools, injectors, monitoring software, and other background programs can conflict with games. Steam lists non-essential software as a possible source of launch problems, but no particular item below is established as a universal cause for The Mortuary Assistant.
- Steam Overlay
- Discord Overlay
- Xbox Game Bar
- NVIDIA App or GeForce Experience overlay
- AMD Adrenalin overlay
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner Statistics Server
- ReShade or other graphics injectors
- Screen-recording or streaming overlays
- RGB and hardware-monitoring utilities
Close the game, disable overlays and non-essential programs temporarily, then launch it and reproduce the crash. If it becomes stable, re-enable programs one at a time to identify a possible conflict. Don’t permanently disable antivirus protection. If you suspect it is blocking the game, check its protection history or add an exception only if appropriate.
Try a lower-load graphics setup
If the game closes after reaching the menu or during a graphics-heavy scene, reduce the load for a test:
- Switch to Windowed or Borderless Windowed if fullscreen is unstable.
- Try a lower resolution and a moderate preset.
- Turn off optional post-processing effects, if available.
- Cap the frame rate if the game offers that control.
- Apply one change at a time, then restart the game.
Lower settings may help when GPU load is part of the problem, but they won’t repair damaged files, a driver issue, an overlay conflict, or a bug tied to a particular scene. Because the July 2024 hotfix addressed a specific crash related to changing settings to Medium or below, update the game before treating a graphics change as the solution.

- Processor: 2 GHz or higher
- Memory: 4 GB RAM

- Storage: 4 GB available space
Meeting minimum requirements is not a guarantee of stable performance, especially if the PC is close to the minimum or running other demanding applications. Also distinguish the game’s listed operating-system minimum from Steam’s client requirement: Steam’s game-specific support page notes that the Steam client requires Windows 10 or later as of January 1, 2024. The game listing’s Windows 7 entry does not override that client requirement.
Check resources if it freezes or crashes after playing for a while
For a freeze, stutter, or crash that appears after an extended session, check Windows Task Manager for available memory and unusually high CPU or GPU use. Confirm that the drive has free space, and check GPU temperatures and clock behavior with a trusted hardware tool. Windows Event Viewer may also show an application-error entry around the time of the crash. These checks can point to a system-level problem, but an event entry or high resource reading alone does not establish the cause.

Record the date and time of the crash, what you were doing, where it occurred, your Windows version, PC specifications, graphics-driver version, and any error message. The exact scene or action that reproduces the problem can be especially useful.

Reinstall only after safer repairs
Verifying files is quicker and less disruptive than reinstalling, so try it first. Consider reinstalling only if verification repeatedly reports problems, the installation appears damaged, or the crash persists after the other steps. Before uninstalling, make sure your saves and local configuration are safe. Steam lists Cloud support for the game, but cloud synchronization should not be treated as an infallible backup. If you can access your saves, copy them somewhere safe before removing files or changing synchronization settings.
There is no general need to run the game as administrator or use Windows compatibility mode. Those can create new permission or compatibility problems. Consider an administrator test only if you have a specific permissions error, and avoid compatibility changes unless you are diagnosing a specific issue.
Contact DreadXP if the crash persists
The game’s Steam support page lists DreadXP as publisher and gives [email protected] for support. You can also use the game’s Steam community discussions. Include useful details rather than just saying that the game crashes:

For most Steam players, start with the low-risk sequence: update the game, verify its files, update Windows and the GPU driver, then test without overlays. If it still crashes, reduce graphics load, note exactly when the failure occurs, and collect the reported crash logs before contacting DreadXP. Avoid reinstalling or deleting saves until you have checked your backups.
