Handheld gaming did not disappear when smartphones took off. What lost ground was the idea that one dedicated portable console could serve every player. Today’s revival is several different markets: Nintendo’s hybrid consoles, PC gaming handhelds, remote-play devices and retro-focused systems. They share a screen and controls, but not the same purpose—or the same trade-offs.
What actually declined—and what did not
The “death” of handheld consoles is a shorthand for a real change, not a literal end. Smartphones put games on a device people already owned, while app stores, free-to-play models and social features changed how many players found and paid for games. Dedicated handhelds, by contrast, often asked buyers to purchase separate hardware and software for a separate ecosystem.
Sony’s mass-market handheld strategy faded after the PSP and Vita eras, and portable gaming received less industry attention. But Nintendo’s DS and 3DS remained important systems, and Nintendo later built the Switch around portable play. The more accurate story is that traditional handhelds faced a period of strategic uncertainty: the market narrowed and fragmented, rather than vanishing.

Why smartphones made the old model harder to sustain
A dedicated handheld had to persuade people to buy another screen, carry it and pay for games in a separate store. Smartphones had already won the convenience contest for casual play: they were always at hand, connected and supported by app stores built around low-friction discovery and free-to-play games.
- Separate ecosystems: A portable console could mean new hardware, new purchases and a library distinct from the player’s home console or PC.
- Expensive hardware: Modern chips and displays cost money, but a portable system also had to compete with phones and full consoles on price.
- Publisher priorities: Console, PC and mobile audiences could offer a clearer route to scale than a smaller dedicated platform.
- Platform-specific risks: Limited third-party momentum, costly proprietary storage or uncertain long-term support could make a handheld less attractive.
Those pressures did not prove that people stopped wanting portable games. They made a smaller version of a home console a less convincing proposition. The successful new designs give portability a distinct benefit: shared TV and handheld play, access to an existing PC library, or remote access to a console at home.
The Switch made portability part of one console
The Nintendo Switch offered a legible answer: one platform that could move between handheld use and television play. A player did not have to choose a separate handheld library over a home-console library. Detachable controllers and docking also made portable play useful for local multiplayer and shared spaces, not just solo gaming on the go.
That hybrid design changed the meaning of “handheld.” It became a way to use the same console in different contexts rather than a lesser alternative to a television-bound machine. Nintendo’s active Switch 2 platform shows that the company continues to center hardware, software and accessories around this portable-and-TV approach.
The model is not a universal formula. Nintendo’s strength depends on its first-party games, brand loyalty and tightly controlled ecosystem. Its success does not mean a Windows handheld, a streaming screen or a retro device serves the same audience.

Steam Deck made PC portability feel more like a console
Valve’s Steam Deck mattered because it packaged PC gaming as something closer to a console experience. It gave players a handheld interface to a library they may already own, controller-oriented controls, suspend-and-resume behavior, and a path to use the device with an external display. SteamOS and Valve’s Proton compatibility layer help run many Windows games on Linux, reducing—but not removing—the work of adapting a PC library to portable hardware.
Valve’s Steam Deck software page describes its Deck Verified program, which tests games and labels their suitability for the device. The ratings are useful guidance, not a permanent guarantee: compatibility and behavior can change with game updates, software, drivers or Proton. A buyer should check a game’s current status rather than assume every title works equally well.
The current Steam Deck OLED illustrates how much hardware is packed into a portable PC. Valve lists a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED display with refresh rates up to 90Hz, a 6nm APU, Wi-Fi 6E and a 50Wh battery. Its stated gameplay estimate is 3–12 hours, depending on content; that is a broad manufacturer estimate, not a promise for every game or setting. See Valve’s product page and technical specifications for current details.
Deck Verified does not make the Steam Deck a universal PC replacement. Some games are unsupported or untested; anti-cheat, launchers, DRM, controller support or keyboard-and-mouse requirements can create problems. Demanding games can also require compromises in resolution, settings or frame rate. The Deck is not equivalent to a current high-end gaming PC, and its library is not Nintendo’s exclusive catalogue or PlayStation’s native software catalogue.
One label, several different kinds of handheld
Today’s devices are often grouped together because they are portable, but the more useful distinction is what each one lets the player do. Omdia’s 2025 discussion of the market includes Switch and Switch 2, Steam Deck, PlayStation Portal, ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw and Playdate—systems with very different business models and capabilities.

| Category | Primary value | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid console | One library for portable and television play, often anchored by exclusive games. | Closed platform ecosystem and its own software catalogue. |
| Portable PC | Access to PC games and, depending on the device and operating system, multiple stores. | Battery, compatibility and software friction; setup can feel more like managing a PC. |
| Remote-play device | A screen and controls for accessing games from an existing console or service. | Depends on a host or network connection; it is not a substitute for offline local play. |
| Retro handheld | Compact, focused play for older games and enthusiast libraries. | Limited modern software support; emulation legality depends on the game, jurisdiction and how software is obtained. |
Windows handhelds trade simplicity for breadth
Devices such as ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X, Lenovo Legion Go models and MSI Claw systems bring Windows to a handheld form. That can mean access to multiple PC storefronts, Xbox PC games and software that may not work well on SteamOS. Some designs emphasize higher performance modes; Legion Go models have also explored large displays, kickstands and detachable controllers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWindows is also the awkward part. Its desktop interface was built for keyboard, mouse and larger displays, not a small touchscreen controlled mainly by gamepad. Small touch targets, launchers with inconsistent controller support, background processes, updates and scattered power settings can turn a quick play session into PC maintenance. Omdia specifically identified Windows 11’s suitability for handheld gaming as a weakness. Hardware capability has advanced faster than the controller-first software experience.
PlayStation Portal extends a console rather than replacing one
PlayStation Portal is primarily a remote-play device, not a self-contained PS5-equivalent handheld. It is designed to access PlayStation gameplay over a network, so its value depends on an existing PlayStation setup and a usable connection. Sony’s compatibility guidance covers supported PlayStation Link audio-device connections and PS Portal connectivity involving PS5, Windows PC or Mac.
Remote play can make an existing console useful when someone else has the television, but it does not provide the same independence as running games locally. Congested Wi-Fi, high latency, weak upload performance or an unavailable host can undermine the experience. It is a poor fit for a buyer who needs reliable offline play while traveling.
Retro systems answer a narrower question
Retro handhelds are for players whose priority is older software, small size or a focused device—not modern AAA releases. Emulation is not automatically lawful or unlawful in every case: the answer can depend on the system, game, location and source of the game files. Treat this as a separate enthusiast market rather than a cheaper route to the same catalogue as a PC or hybrid console.

Why several technologies became “good enough” together
No single breakthrough brought portable gaming back. Progress across chips, screens, storage, connectivity and software combined to make new designs practical. More efficient integrated CPU/GPU chips made capable systems smaller; faster, denser storage made larger game libraries more feasible; OLED improved contrast in some devices; and USB-C made charging and external-display connections more standardized.
Wireless improvements support streaming and online play, while upscaling can help limited hardware render demanding games at portable resolutions. Suspend-and-resume systems make short sessions easier to fit into a day. On Steam Deck, Proton helps bridge a large Windows game catalogue to Linux. Each improvement has limits, but together they support devices that can feel personal and flexible rather than merely underpowered.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The hidden costs of making games portable
Portable hardware has to balance performance against battery, heat, weight, noise and price. Turning up a performance mode may improve frame rates, but it generally draws more power and can increase heat and fan noise. A large display or battery can improve one aspect of play while making the device heavier. The best specification on paper is not automatically the most comfortable device for a long session or smaller hands.
Battery and performance
Battery estimates vary with the game, brightness, frame rate, wireless activity and performance settings. A light 2D game, a demanding 3D title and a streamed game can produce very different runtimes. The OLED Deck’s manufacturer estimate of 3–12 hours is explicitly content-dependent; compare devices and workloads carefully rather than treating any quoted range as guaranteed playtime.
Compatibility and setup
On PC handhelds, a title can fail or disappoint because of anti-cheat restrictions, unsupported launchers, DRM, poor controller support, Linux compatibility limits or performance demands. Windows may broaden access but add interface friction; SteamOS streamlines the main store experience but not every game. Check the current compatibility status and requirements of the games you actually intend to play.

Storage, accessories and repair
Large games can quickly fill internal storage. Before buying, check SSD capacity and whether it is replaceable, supported microSD standards and practical performance, and whether external USB storage works for your intended setup. Do not assume all handhelds support the same cards, docks or charging behavior.
Count the full setup cost, not only the device: a case, storage expansion, suitable USB-C charger, dock, subscription or replacement accessory may matter to your use. A dock is unnecessary if you never plan to connect to a TV or monitor. Repairability and long-term support also matter for an expensive portable computer; Valve directs Steam Deck owners to iFixit information for replacement parts and repair guides in its FAQ.
Is the comeback mainstream or still a niche?
It is both, depending on which market is meant. Nintendo’s hybrid model is the broadest mainstream proposition; portable PC systems are culturally visible but remain a much smaller segment than Nintendo’s ecosystem. Remote-play products mainly appeal to owners of the platform they extend, while retro systems have a more focused enthusiast audience.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Omdia forecast 2.3 million PC gaming handhelds sold in 2025 and more than 20 million combined Switch and Switch 2 units globally in 2025. These are analyst forecasts, not audited final sales results, and they describe distinct segments rather than a single comparable handheld market. The forecast illustrates why calling every portable device one market can obscure the difference in scale. Omdia also argued that many PC handhelds lacked a clear generational performance leap over Steam Deck. Read its 2025 outlook with those qualifications in mind.
What will determine whether the revival lasts?
More power alone is not enough to sustain a category. Hardware makers need devices that are comfortable, affordable and efficient, while platform owners need to keep games working and make software support worthwhile over time. Windows handhelds need a more coherent small-screen, controller-first experience; PC devices also need to make compatibility and battery trade-offs easy to understand. Nintendo’s controlled ecosystem faces a different test: continue giving players exclusive software and a reason to choose its hardware.
For buyers, the practical question is not which device is the most powerful, but which kind of access matters. A Switch 2 is compelling for Nintendo software and simple hybrid play; a Steam Deck suits many players with Steam libraries who value a console-like PC interface; a Windows handheld makes sense when broader storefront access outweighs setup friction; Portal extends a PS5 over a reliable network; and a retro device serves older-game priorities. The revived handheld is not one machine or one comeback, but a set of answers to different ways people want to play.
