Nex Playground captures what made Xbox Kinect appealing: people move in front of the TV and play together without holding controllers. It packages that idea in a dedicated, family-focused system that Engadget’s January 2026 review found polished, but it is not a new Xbox or a general-purpose console. The reported $249 US hardware price is only the entry point: most of the library requires a recurring Play Pass subscription, and you need room to move.
What is Nex Playground?
Nex Playground is a small, console-like box that connects to a television and uses an integrated front-facing camera and computer vision to track players’ movements. It is designed specifically for motion-controlled family and party games, with reported support for up to four players.
It is not a camera accessory for an existing Xbox, a VR headset or a streaming stick with a few games added. It is also not a direct replacement for an Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo console: its curated, closed library focuses on movement-based play rather than a broad catalog of conventional releases. You do not install arbitrary console games or, according to Engadget’s review, buy most titles individually.

The comparison is about the kind of play, not a Microsoft relationship or a return of Kinect hardware. In both concepts, players stand in front of the television and use body movements to interact with what is on screen. That makes the idea easy to grasp for casual players and creates a more social, active living-room experience than passing around a controller.

Engadget’s reviewer found the Playground’s tracking reliable in family play and judged it comparable to the Kinect experience. That is an editorial assessment of the reviewed system, not a promise that tracking will be flawless in every room. The Playground’s advantage is its focused, self-contained setup; the trade-off is that its simplicity comes with a narrower, subscription-centered library. Kinect, by contrast, belonged to a broader Xbox ecosystem.

What you need to set it up
The system connects to a television over HDMI and needs nearby power. Engadget reports that the box includes a remote and batteries; the camera is integrated, so the review does not describe a need for extra gaming peripherals. Initial setup and game downloads require Wi-Fi, and a Nex account is created or accessed during setup using a phone.
- Connect the Playground to power and to an available HDMI input on the TV.
- Insert the remote’s batteries, then turn on the system.
- Connect to Wi-Fi, install the device update and create or sign in to a Nex account using a phone.
- Download the included games. If you subscribe, download the additional Play Pass titles you want.
- Position the unit so the camera can see the players, then clear the movement area before starting a game.
Installation time depends on network speed and how many games you download. In Engadget’s test, the first update took a few minutes and an initial five-game download took about five minutes on a gigabit connection. The reviewer also reported that installation could take up to 30 minutes in some reports; downloading the full Play Pass library took about 35 minutes in that test, and slower connections could take hours. Those are review-era timings, not guaranteed download times.
Check the room before buying
Engadget’s reviewer recommends clearing approximately six feet of space for play. That is a practical estimate from the review, not a universal manufacturer requirement established here. Measure the area in front of your TV and check whether players can move and swing their arms without hitting furniture, walls or one another. A coffee table in the camera’s view, a narrow den or a cramped bedroom can make a movement game awkward or unsafe.
Camera placement and the room layout are worth considering as well. Furniture or people blocking players, players standing close together, glare, lighting and a TV or camera positioned awkwardly are sensible factors to check, but the cited review does not establish how often any of them cause tracking problems. Nex’s product coverage reports up to four-player tracking; it does not establish identical performance in every setup.

What does Nex Playground cost over time?
Engadget reported US prices in January 2026 of $249 for the hardware, $89 for a year of Nex Play Pass and $49 for three months of Play Pass. It also reported a $29 Sports Pack at Target, including tennis, basketball and bowling games. These are historical reported prices, not independently verified prices or offers for September 2026; check the current product and checkout pages before purchasing. These totals are arithmetic examples based on the cited January 2026 prices, before tax, not current quotes. At those rates, one annual pass costs less than four separate three-month passes, but the value depends on how often the household actually plays.
The subscription is central to the library
Engadget’s review says some games are available without a subscription, but most of the library requires Play Pass. It also says individual games generally cannot be purchased, which means there is no reported one-title purchase route or used-game market to avoid the recurring fee. The review noted no ads or in-app purchases at the time; that is a review-era observation, not a permanent guarantee.
That model makes Nex different from a console purchase where a buyer can build a collection title by title. If you expect the system to be used often, the subscription may feel like paying for an ongoing rotation of family activities. If it will come out only occasionally, the recurring cost is harder to justify.

Can you play without internet?
Yes, after setup and downloads: Engadget reports that downloaded games can be played offline. Wi-Fi is still needed for initial setup, updates and downloading games, so “offline” does not mean the system can be taken straight out of the box and used without an internet connection. For a trip or second home, download the games you want in advance and bring access to a compatible TV and power.

A good fit for
- Families who want multiplayer TV entertainment that gets people moving rather than sitting with separate controllers.
- Households with a safe, open play area and a TV with an available HDMI input.
- Former Kinect or Wii fans who miss accessible motion-based party play and are comfortable with a curated platform.
- Families who value familiar children’s characters and simple group games, provided those titles remain in the library.
- People who can see themselves playing frequently enough to make a subscription worthwhile.
Be cautious if
- You want a one-time purchase with no ongoing fee, or expect to buy and resell games individually.
- Your available play space is tight or obstructed, or players cannot move safely in front of the TV.
- You are shopping for blockbuster releases, deep role-playing games, competitive online play or the breadth of a mainstream console.
- Your internet connection is unreliable for setup and downloads.
- You expect occasional use only, or worry that the novelty of motion games may wear off quickly.
Alternatives depend on what you want to keep
Existing Xbox and Kinect equipment
If you already own compatible Xbox hardware and Kinect accessories, using them may be a way to revisit the experience without buying Nex. It is not a straightforward new-purchase recommendation: the equipment is older, and availability and support may be less predictable. Check compatibility and the particular games you want before relying on a used setup.
A conventional family console
A Nintendo Switch or another controller-based family console is a better direction if you want a broader catalog, traditional controls or individual and physical game purchases. It does not reproduce Nex’s hands-free, camera-tracked play.

Active Arcade is Nex’s mobile-oriented motion-game project and could be a lower-hardware way to try the general idea. It is not the same as a dedicated TV appliance; Engadget notes that Nex found it difficult to persuade parents to use phones for this kind of activity.

- Confirm the current hardware price, Play Pass terms and Sports Pack availability; the figures above were reported in January 2026.
- Measure the movement area and check the camera’s view from the intended TV position.
- Confirm that your television has a free HDMI input and that power is accessible.
- Make sure your internet connection can handle setup and downloading the games you want.
- Because the system uses a camera and account, review Nex’s current privacy, account and child-profile policies. Engadget confirms that the unit has a lens cover, but its review does not establish whether video is stored or transmitted, or Nex’s full data practices.
Verdict
Nex Playground is best understood as a polished family activity platform, not a general-purpose console. It brings Kinect-style movement gaming back in a more focused package, with approachable group games and reported reliable tracking. Whether it is worth buying comes down to three practical questions: do you have enough room, will your household play regularly, and are you comfortable paying for access to most of the library through Play Pass?
