The 2024 rumor that Sony’s PS5 Pro would resemble the PS5 Slim was broadly right: the retail console has a white shell, a black center section and three dark horizontal stripes. But it is Slim-inspired, not a Slim clone. The Pro is taller than the Slim, launched without a built-in disc drive, and does not use Slim replacement covers.
What the original PS5 Pro leak claimed
On August 29, 2024, Dealabs leaker Billbil-kun described a sketch reportedly based on the front of the PS5 Pro’s retail packaging. Push Square reported the claims: the console would be called PS5 Pro, use a mostly white design resembling the Slim, and have three black horizontal bands across its center. The report also said the system would be slightly thicker than the Slim, ship without a built-in disc drive, include a standard DualSense controller, and retain two front USB-C ports and a central power button. Push Square’s August 2024 report attributed those details to the leak; the sketch was not an authenticated Sony product image.
Why the design prediction seemed plausible
The report presented its sketch as packaging-based rather than as a speculative concept, though readers could not independently inspect the claimed source material. Days later, some fans and outlets saw a similar silhouette in Sony’s PlayStation 30th Anniversary artwork. That resemblance was treated as a possible tease or accidental appearance, not a confirmation by Sony. GameSpot’s report and TechRadar’s coverage described the interpretation. The Slim-like direction also made sense within Sony’s existing PS5 family styling, but that context alone did not verify the leaked details.

Sony confirmed the broad look
Sony officially revealed the PlayStation 5 Pro on September 10, 2024, describing it as having a “familiar look” that fits the PS5 family. The final console matched the leak’s most distinctive visual details: white outer panels, a black central section and three prominent black stripes. Those stripes are part of the Pro’s distinctive center design, not evidence that it is simply a Slim with different hardware. Sony’s announcement confirmed the console and its design direction.

PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim dimensions
Similar styling does not mean the two consoles have the same footprint. The approximate dimensions below are reported comparisons; orientation and measuring conventions can affect how dimensions are presented.

These approximate figures come from Video Games Chronicle’s comparison. The practical description is “Slim-inspired rather than Slim-sized”: the Pro is considerably narrower than the launch PS5, but its height is much closer to the original model than to the Slim.

Disc drive and Slim cover compatibility
The leak was right that the PS5 Pro would not have a built-in disc drive. Sony launched it as a digital console and offered a separate Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for players who want physical games or disc playback. Sony’s reveal and November 7, 2024 launch announcement confirmed the retail configuration. Its U.S. launch MSRP was $699.99; that is a historical launch price, not a current price quote.
The early suggestion that Slim replacement covers might fit should not be treated as a compatibility promise. Later reporting said Slim covers were not compatible with the Pro. Visual similarity does not establish that panels or accessories fit: check the model specified for any replacement part. The optional disc drive is a separate purchase, not something included with the Pro’s launch package.

The Pro was more than a cosmetic redesign
Sony positioned the Pro as a performance upgrade. Its September 2024 announcement claimed 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5, 28% faster memory and rendering up to 45% faster. Sony also described ray-tracing workloads as reaching twice or, in some cases, three times the speed, and introduced PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), its machine-learning upscaling technology. These are Sony’s comparisons and claims, not a guarantee of a fixed improvement in every game: results depend on the title, its update and graphics modes, and the display.
The console launched with a 2TB SSD and one DualSense controller. Sony also promoted PS5 Pro Enhanced support for participating games and Game Boost for more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. Enhancement features vary by title, so a Pro label or the console’s hardware does not mean every game receives the same visual or performance changes. Sony stated that existing accessories including PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, the Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore are compatible.

Should a PS5 Slim owner upgrade?
The design resemblance is not a reason by itself to switch consoles. The decision depends on the games you play, your display, storage needs and whether you use physical discs.
- Consider the Pro if you want the strongest image-quality and frame-rate options available on PlayStation for supported games, value ray tracing or PSSR where implemented, and can benefit from its 2TB SSD.
- Keep or choose a Slim if purchase price matters more than maximum graphics quality, you mainly play titles without meaningful Pro enhancements, or you want a disc drive included in the console configuration you buy.
- Factor in your display. A 4K or higher-refresh display gives you a better chance of seeing the Pro’s intended advantages; a 1080p screen or games that do not use Pro enhancements may make the premium harder to justify.
- Count the full cost if you use discs. The Pro’s launch MSRP did not include its separately sold drive. Compare the total against a disc-equipped Slim rather than comparing console prices alone.
- Do not expect a smaller Slim replacement. The Pro is taller than the Slim, and Slim cosmetic covers were reported as incompatible.

The original prediction was substantially accurate about the Pro’s visual identity and digital-only launch configuration. It was never enough to establish exact dimensions or accessory compatibility; the final console is a distinct model, not a rebadged Slim.
