Roblox does not have one universal file size. For the computer client, Roblox’s current official requirement is at least 300 MB of available system storage for installation—not a promise that the finished installation occupies exactly 300 MB. The client also downloads experience assets as you play, so the application, cache and total disk use can all be different.
That distinction explains why claims such as “Roblox is exactly 20 MB” or “the store download is all the space it needs” are unreliable. The supported device, client version, experiences visited and locally retained files affect the result.
What the official 300 MB figure actually means
Roblox’s current computer requirements page lists 300 MB of available system storage as the minimum space needed for installation. It is an installation requirement, not a measured universal installed footprint. The figure applies to the computer client documented by Roblox and should not be read as a fixed size for every device or platform.

Why Roblox can use more space after installation
Roblox experiences are not all bundled into one permanent download. Roblox says its client can dynamically load and unload instances and assets as a player moves through an experience, delivering content according to the device’s capabilities and available bandwidth. As a result, the following are separate measurements:
- Package or download size: data delivered by the installer or app store.
- Installed application size: the files required by the Roblox client itself.
- Cached local data: downloaded content and other files retained by the device.
- Total Roblox-related storage: the application plus caches and operating-system data.
The dynamic-delivery explanation appears in Roblox’s 2025 annual report and 2026 proxy statement. It is why two players can see different storage totals even when they use the same client.
Computer platform requirements
Roblox currently lists these computer platforms:

These platform details and the 300 MB computer-storage requirement come from the official requirements page. Current official materials do not establish one fixed MB number for iOS, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, Chromebook, or VR. Store listings can also change by operating system, architecture and version, so a listing’s download number should not be treated as Roblox’s permanent total.

How much space does Roblox Studio need?
Roblox Studio is a separate application from the player client. Current Studio documentation lists a minimum of Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 and 3 GB of RAM. Roblox recommends Windows 11 or macOS 14 or newer, 8 GB of RAM and a 1600×900-or-higher display. Studio is available only on Windows and Mac.

To install it, use the current labels and filenames:
- Choose Download Studio.
- In the pop-up dialog, click Download Studio.
- Open
RobloxStudio.exeon Windows orRobloxStudio.dmgon Mac. - After installation, click Launch Studio and sign in.
Studio’s setup instructions, system requirements and update behavior are documented at Roblox Creator Hub. If Studio is out of date, an Update button appears in the upper-right corner; selecting it asks you to save and close the open place, then updates and restarts Studio.

Roblox place files have their own size limit
A game creator’s place file is not the same thing as the Roblox application. Studio supports two local formats:

Roblox’s current place-file limit is 100 MB (104,857,600 bytes). Exceeding it can make Save to Roblox or Publish to Roblox fail. Roblox notes that uploaded data is slightly smaller than the .rbxl file, so exporting to .rbxl provides an approximate estimate rather than an exact server-side measurement.

What to do when a place is too large
Use the automatic recovery copy
If saving fails because of the file-size limit, Studio automatically creates a recovery file. With collaboration enabled, it backs up the last three save attempts. With collaboration disabled, it follows the Auto-Recovery settings in Studio Settings. The documented locations are:
- Windows:

/Users/your-username/Library/Application Support/Roblox/RobloxStudio/AutoSaves/
Find unnecessary data
Roblox identifies several causes of unexpectedly large places:
- Unreferenced or hidden assets accumulated over time.
- Redundant parts or instances.
- Repeated
SurfaceAppearancesand textures. - Dense or poorly formed terrain, including holes or misplaced water beneath the terrain surface.
- Obfuscated or unclear text in models and attached scripts, which Roblox describes as both a compression problem and a possible malicious backdoor.
Reduce collision-data overhead
Select meshes and use the Properties window to change collision fidelity. Roblox says Box and Hull are more memory-efficient than the default setting.

Split a very large game
When cleanup is not enough, divide the experience into multiple smaller places and connect them with teleports. Serialization and upload occur at the individual-place level, so splitting can keep each place below the limit.
How to check Roblox’s actual storage use on your device
The only reliable answer for a particular installation is the device’s own storage view. On Windows or macOS, inspect the Roblox application and its user-data or cache folders; on mobile or consoles, open the platform’s installed-app storage screen. Check again after visiting the experiences you actually play, because dynamic downloads and retained cache data can change the total.
Leave more free space than the headline 300 MB minimum. The requirement covers installation availability, while updates, temporary files, caches and other operating-system activity need additional working room.
Bottom line
For a supported Windows or Mac computer, plan for at least 300 MB of free storage to install Roblox, but do not expect the application to remain exactly 300 MB. Roblox’s downloaded experience content, cache and client updates make real-world usage variable. Roblox Studio and creator place files are separate: Studio has its own hardware requirements, and each published place must stay within the 100 MB limit.
