If The Sims 4 starts crashing, showing errors, or behaving strangely after an update, a mod may be the cause—but the symptom alone cannot prove it. The safest way to find out is to test the game with mods disabled, check for creator updates, then reintroduce files in batches until you isolate the conflict. During the disabled-mod test, exit without saving to avoid removing custom content from your save.
Why Sims 4 mods can stop working after an update
Player-made content can become incompatible when The Sims 4 changes. EA says a mod that worked before an update may cause problems afterward; its creator may need to update or reinstall it, and that update may take time. EA disables mods during updates to limit possible gameplay problems, but that does not mean every mod is broken. See EA’s guidance on mods, game updates, and error codes.
EA uses “Mods” as an umbrella term for Custom Content (CC) and Game Mods. CC includes player-made clothing and objects. Game Mods change game functionality or add features, and some include script code. This distinction matters when troubleshooting: EA says gameplay mods are more likely to cause issues than CC.
Signs a mod may be causing a problem
Problems can range from a game that will not start or load a save to smaller visual or gameplay glitches. A floating hat can point to faulty CC; Sims walking up walls or taking an unusually long time to eat dinner can point toward a gameplay mod. These are clues, not proof. EA says there is no single definitive way to tell whether mods caused a problem.

Some in-game error codes can also suggest a mod issue. EA associates codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 with possible script issues, so a script mod may be involved. Code 110 often appears after an update and can indicate outdated mods. These codes are diagnostic clues, not an exhaustive list or confirmation of the cause.
How to find the problem mod safely
- Test the game with mods disabled. After an update, choose Resume or Load Game and test Live Mode. Custom content will not appear during this check. Confirm that the game works before turning mods back on.
- Exit without saving. EA warns that saving while CC and mods are disabled can remove content from the saved game. Exit without saving after the test.
- Check creator updates. Look up each suspect mod on its creator’s site and confirm it supports your current Sims 4 update. Follow the creator’s instructions for replacing or reinstalling files. If the creator has not released an update yet, you may need to wait before using that mod again.
- Re-enable mods and relaunch. In Game Options > Other, select Enable Custom Content and Mods. Exit and relaunch the game for the change to take effect. You may need to enable this setting again after a game update.
- Test files in batches. Remove all mods, then restore a tracked batch and test the game. If the problem returns, the cause is in that batch; if it does not, test another. Keep a record of which files are in each batch.
- Halve a problem batch. Once you find a batch that reproduces the issue, split it in half and test each half. Keep dividing the half that causes the problem until you identify the file. This systematic halving process is commonly called the “50/50 method”; EA describes removing and reintroducing mods in batches to isolate the cause.
Which mods should you test first?
Start with Game Mods, especially script mods, because EA says they are more likely to cause issues than CC. If removing gameplay mods does not resolve the problem, test custom content. Compare the malfunction with what a mod changes: for example, an issue with a feature added by a gameplay mod gives you a useful lead, but still needs testing.

When to contact a mod creator
Check the creator’s site for compatibility information and support instructions. When reporting a problem, include your current Sims 4 version number and describe the symptom and troubleshooting steps you have tried. EA recommends contacting the creator; CurseForge’s Sims 4 Mods and CC troubleshooting page likewise directs users to the mod creator when loaded content causes bugs.

Mods are available for The Sims 4 on PC and Mac, not PlayStation or Xbox. EA’s installation guidance covers downloading a mod, extracting ZIP or RAR archives, placing the extracted files in the Sims 4 Mods folder under Electronic Arts / The Sims 4 (creating the folder if needed), enabling mods in Game Options > Other, and relaunching the game. See EA’s mod installation instructions.
