First, identify where the launch fails
Before changing files or settings, note how you start the game and what happens after you click Play. Does the EA app stay on “Preparing,” does the game process open and then close, or does an error appear? Record the exact error text or code. These symptoms point to different troubleshooting branches, but none identifies the cause on its own.
- EA app stays on “Preparing”: try the app-specific cache and background-app steps below.
- The game opens, then closes or crashes: repair the game, test the EA overlay, and check whether an unmodded game launches.
- You see a specific error: use the DirectX, permissions, or mod guidance below only if it matches the message or circumstances.
Repair the game, then test the EA app
Repair The Sims 4 in the EA app
For an EA app installation, open Library, find The Sims 4, select the three-dot menu on its game tile, and choose Repair. Wait for the repair to finish before trying to launch again. EA recommends this when a game will not load. EA’s game download, installation, and loading troubleshooting
If the EA app is stuck on “Preparing”
EA’s additional suggestions for a game stuck preparing are to clear the app cache, close background applications that may be limiting performance, check Windows and graphics-driver updates, and try a clean boot. To clear the cache, open Help > App Recovery > Clear Cache in the EA app. A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs; use it as a diagnostic test rather than a permanent way to run the PC. Test whether the EA in-game overlay is involved
EA says the in-game overlay can sometimes cause a PC game to crash. In the EA app, open Settings > Application, switch the in-game overlay off, and try launching The Sims 4 again. If that changes the result, it is evidence of a possible overlay conflict, not proof that the overlay is the cause on every system. Check whether mods or custom content prevent launch
A game update can make a previously working mod incompatible. EA recommends first checking whether the game launches with mods disabled, then checking creators’ compatibility information before updating or restoring content. EA does not pre-screen, endorse, or support specific mods or custom content, so use sources you trust and understand that third-party content carries risks. Disable mods safely and test in batches
- Move or disable your mods and custom content using the method in EA’s mod troubleshooting instructions, then launch the game to see whether it works without them.
- If it launches, check each creator’s compatibility notes and update or remove outdated items as directed.
- Re-enable content in batches, launching after each batch. If the problem returns, split that batch and repeat until you isolate the item or group that triggers it. EA calls this the “50/50 method.”
Do not save and exit while content is disabled if you plan to restore that content: EA warns that saving before re-enabling mods or custom content can remove it from the saved game. Use mod-related codes as clues, not a diagnosis
EA associates codes 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 with possible script-mod issues, and says code 110 usually appears after an update and is attributed to outdated mods. These associations make mods worth checking when one of those codes appears; they do not establish that every launch failure is caused by a mod. Use error-specific Windows fixes
If the error mentions missing DirectX files or libraries
EA’s DirectX and EA app troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for Windows updates and installing Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime to supply missing libraries needed by the EA app. This is a targeted step for a DirectX-related symptom, not a general fix for every Sims 4 launch failure. If you see “Create Folder Error” during install, update, or repair
EA describes this message as a permissions issue. Its guidance is to check that the Windows SYSTEM account has full control of the game folder. User Account Control (UAC) is a Windows security feature; if you changed its setting while troubleshooting, restore it afterward. Avoid leaving Windows protections broadly weakened as a workaround. If The Sims 4 still will not launch
Keep the exact error text or code, launcher, and result of an unmodded launch test available when you seek help; they help distinguish a game-file issue from an app, mod, or Windows-specific problem. Use the official EA Help hub for The Sims 4 for current PC support options, including the relevant troubleshooting instructions for mods and for backing up or resetting the game. Do not reset the game before backing up user data and following EA’s instructions for that procedure.
