2025 was an unusually broad year for strategy games. It delivered grand strategy in Europa Universalis V, classic-style real-time strategy in Tempest Rising, tactical missions in Commandos: Origins, city building in Anno 117: Pax Romana, and major releases across deckbuilding, management simulation, military RTS, and 4X strategy.
These are the 10 standout strategy releases from 2025, with remasters and re-releases clearly identified rather than presented as entirely new games.
1. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII
Released: February 11, 2025
Platforms: Windows PC, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S
Civilization VII is the year’s biggest traditional 4X release, combining exploration, diplomacy, research, expansion, and warfare across a historical campaign. Its standard worldwide launch was February 11, while qualifying higher-priced editions received early access on February 6. The distinction matters: February 6 was not the standard release date.

The game launched on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, alongside consoles and Linux and macOS versions. Later listings also include Nintendo Switch 2 and an Apple Arcade edition released in 2026, but neither was part of the original February 2025 launch. 2K’s launch announcement confirms the original release timing.
2. Europa Universalis V
Released: November 4, 2025
Platform: Windows PC
Europa Universalis V is the year’s defining grand-strategy release. Developed by Paradox Tinto and published by Paradox Interactive, it covers a campaign from April 1, 1337, through January 1, 1837. Players guide states through diplomacy, war, trade, economics, technology, and centuries of political change.
Its larger simulation is built around a more detailed population model, including social classes, migration, and economic productivity. Many systems can also be automated, letting players delegate areas such as trade or military management to the game’s AI instead of micromanaging every decision. Paradox’s release announcement confirms the November 4 date.
The post-launch roadmap already includes Fate of the Phoenix, released May 6, 2026 alongside patch 1.2, “Echinades,” with Across the Pillars listed for Q3 2026 and The Auld Alliance for Q4 2026.

Tempest Rising is a modern real-time strategy game built around base construction, resource gathering, power management, production, defensive structures, and unit abilities. Its structure includes a single-player campaign, multiplayer, and skirmish play, making it one of the clearest 2025 choices for players looking for a classic PC RTS.

The release date requires a qualification. April 24 was the originally advertised public date, while April 17 was intended as Deluxe Edition advanced access. A publishing error gave Standard Edition purchasers access on April 17, after which the publisher treated April 17 as the official release date. The Veti faction was available in single-player but was not available for multiplayer in the cited version.
4. Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition
Released: 2025
Platform: PC
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition revisits the medieval real-time strategy formula of the original game, combining castle construction with real-time combat, siege warfare, food and arms production chains, resource management, and supply lines.
This is not simply the unchanged 2002 game. The Definitive Edition adds updated graphics, new content, new features, new units, and new missions. It is best understood as a substantial remastered edition for players who want the series’ castle-building and siege systems in a refreshed package. 5. Commandos: Origins
Released: April 9, 2025
Launch platforms: Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S
Commandos: Origins is a real-time tactics prequel about the formation and wartime operations of the Commandos team between 1940 and 1942. Rather than directing an economy or building a base, players manage specialists, positioning, stealth, timing, and coordinated actions across large missions.

Broken Arrow belongs in the modern military RTS category rather than turn-based strategy or grand strategy. It is a PC release focused on contemporary battlefield decision-making, making it a natural choice for players who prefer military operations and real-time control to historical empire management.

Its inclusion also broadens 2025’s strategy lineup beyond the established series above: the year offered not only sequels and remasters, but also a newer military RTS aimed at players seeking a more current setting.
7. Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles
Released: 2025
Genre: Tactical RPG / strategy
Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles brings the Final Fantasy Tactics property back as a re-release or remaster-style product. Its appeal comes from the series’ tactical-RPG identity: turn-based battles, character development, job-based customization, and careful use of terrain and positioning.
It should not be described as an entirely new numbered sequel. It is a separate 2025 product associated with the original Final Fantasy Tactics rather than a wholly new entry in the series.

Genre: Strategy deckbuilder / roguelike strategy
Monster Train 2 represents the deckbuilding and roguelike side of strategy. Its runs are built around assembling and improving a deck, making risk-and-reward decisions, and adapting a build as circumstances change. That structure gives each attempt a different strategic shape and makes long-term planning as important as individual battles.
This is a sequel to Monster Train, not a DLC pack or expansion for the original. It is a strong fit for players who prefer compact, replayable strategic decisions over traditional map-based empire building.
9. Anno 117: Pax Romana
Released: 2025
Genre: City building / economic management
Anno 117: Pax Romana brings the Anno series’ city-building and economic-management formula to the Roman era. Its place on this list reflects the broader meaning of strategy games: planning production, developing settlements, balancing economic needs, and managing the consequences of expansion.
Best Value
It is a new Anno series entry set in the Roman period, not a remaster of an earlier game. Players looking for a slower-paced alternative to military RTS games will find its economic and urban-management focus more relevant than battlefield tactics.
10. Two Point Museum
Released: 2025
Genre: Management strategy / business simulation
Two Point Museum extends the Two Point series into museum management. Its strategy comes from running an institution: organizing exhibits, developing the attraction, and making business and operational decisions while maintaining a successful museum.
It is a new management-simulation release, not an expansion for Two Point Hospital or Two Point Campus. That makes it the list’s clearest choice for players who enjoy planning, optimization, and humorous business simulations more than combat.

What about other strategy games listed for 2025?
Release calendars can make the year look larger by counting console ports and edition launches as new games. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition, for example, appear in some 2025 calendars because of console releases; they were not first released as new strategy games in 2025.
Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is included here because it was a significant 2025 remastered release, but its status should be clear: it is not a wholly original sequel. Likewise, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is a remaster-style return for an established property, while Monster Train 2 is a genuine sequel.
