The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) opened early access to its free digital research library on January 30, 2025. Anyone can search and view its public digitized materials online, including searchable video game magazines and development, promotional, and cultural ephemera. The portal is an expanding part of VGHF’s holdings—not a complete online catalog or a collection of games to play.
When did the VGHF digital library open?
VGHF announced public early access on January 30, 2025, at library.gamehistory.org. The Foundation had previewed its work-in-progress library in a December 13, 2023 post and discussed a planned soft launch for the following year; that preview was not the public opening. VGHF’s December 2025 retrospective confirmed the early-access launch.
How do you access the library?
Visit library.gamehistory.org to search the public digital materials. Access is free, available worldwide, and does not require special credentials. Public items can be viewed in a browser.

At launch, VGHF reported that the portal contained more than 1,500 full-text-searchable, out-of-print video game magazines. In its blog listing dated September 24, 2026, the Foundation reported that the digital archive had passed 5,000 magazines. These are dated collection snapshots, not a fixed limit.
VGHF’s 2025 impact report said the digital library had nearly doubled in size since launch and that its press asset library held more than 20,000 pieces of digital game art. The report also highlighted the Mark Flitman papers and a Cyan collection that includes hundreds of hours of video documenting the making of the Myst series.

Is everything VGHF owns online?
No. The public portal is a subset of the Foundation’s broader holdings. VGHF’s catalog also describes items that have not been digitized or processed, so finding a catalog record does not necessarily mean the material is available to view online.
Materials may be absent from the public portal because they still need processing or digitization, because a donor or rights holder restricts access, or because the material is commercially available elsewhere. VGHF says some restricted items may be made available for private, individual research at its discretion.

Can you play games in the archive?
No. The digital library is a research archive, not a playable game collection. VGHF generally does not collect retail games, and it says current U.S. copyright restrictions prevent it from providing researchers digital access to out-of-print games.

Access does not grant blanket permission to reproduce an item. VGHF generally does not own the intellectual property in its collection materials and cannot authorize every use. Some special collections and developer materials may have permissions granted by donors.
