But “Complete vs. Standard” is no longer a simple choice for every new digital buyer: the publisher says digital storefronts now offer the Complete Edition in place of the Base Game, while arrangements for PS4 and Xbox One are different. The right answer depends on your platform, format, and whether you already own the game.
What’s included in the Complete Edition?
CD PROJEKT RED describes the Complete Edition as the base game plus its two substantial story expansions and 16 free DLC items. The expansions are Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The publisher estimated in 2022 that the base game offers over 100 hours of gameplay, with another 50 hours from the two expansions together; those are promotional estimates, not guaranteed playtime.
- Base game: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
- Two story expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.
- 16 free DLC items: included in the Complete Edition described by the publisher.
CD PROJEKT RED’s [2022 Complete Edition announcement](https://www.thewitcher.com/us/en/news/42167/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-next-gen-update-is-now-available) also detailed technical and gameplay additions for that release, including platform-specific graphics modes, faster loading, photo mode, cross-platform progression, camera options, quick Sign casting, map and UI changes, and selected community mods. Those are historical 2022 launch details; they should not be treated as the feature list for the separate 2026 Remastered release.
Is a Standard or Base Game edition still sold separately?
Not on every digital storefront. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 [official FAQ](https://support.cdprojektred.com/en/witcher-3/pc/sp-technical/issue/2999/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-remastered-faq) says the digital Base Game has been replaced by the Complete Edition, with the expansion content merged into it, and the standalone expansions have been delisted. In other words, a new digital buyer may not have a separate base-game-only option.

The FAQ says PS4 and Xbox One arrangements remain otherwise unchanged, except that the expansions are now available free. It also says the expansions can still be started separately from the main menu. Check the live store page for your platform and region rather than assuming all storefronts use the same listing.
What if you already own the game or an expansion?
According to the 2026 FAQ, existing owners keep the expansion entitlements they already have. Expansion content is patched into the Base Game, and the publisher says saves, cross progression, achievements, and trophies remain compatible or unaffected. Its support guidance is: “Simply update the game to the latest version to install Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.”

If you own only the Base Game, the current digital-store change means the old separate-purchase setup may not apply to you in the same way it did previously. For PS4 and Xbox One, the FAQ specifically says the expansions are now free; check the platform’s library or store for the applicable update or entitlement.
Does the physical edition include everything?
Physical contents depend on platform. CD PROJEKT RED’s [Nintendo Switch support FAQ](https://support.cdprojektred.com/en/witcher-3/nintendo-switch/sp-technical/issue/1374/what-s-included-in-the-base-game-and-complete-edition) says the Switch Complete Edition includes both expansions and the 16 free DLC items, and that all of this content is on the physical game card. The same FAQ describes the Switch Base Game as having the 16 free DLCs available to download and the two expansions available separately.

That card-specific detail applies to the Nintendo Switch edition covered by the FAQ; it does not establish what is on a physical disc or card for another platform, or what a particular retailer currently has in stock. Check the exact platform, region, and edition on the package or listing.
How do the 2022 Complete Edition and 2026 Remastered relate?
They are distinct release contexts. The 2022 Complete Edition was a refreshed release with the features CD PROJEKT RED announced for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and other supported platforms at that time. In 2026, the publisher announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered for September 29, 2026, describing updated visuals, gameplay, and other improvements, with a free upgrade for owners on qualifying platforms. The FAQ is the place to confirm current platform eligibility; the announcement and FAQ do not make every 2022 feature applicable to every 2026 Remastered platform.

Why do older listings say GOTY Edition?
Older guides and listings may use Game of the Year (GOTY) Edition. In a 2016 announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said the GOTY Edition bundled the base game, both expansions, all DLC, and updates and improvements. It also noted that the product was called Complete Edition in select territories and sales channels. The names therefore reflect different release and market contexts, rather than proving that every current listing is the same regional SKU.
