It is not just a console remaster: PC received the update too. What you get depends on your platform, and the performance figures CD PROJEKT RED published are targets, not guaranteed frame rates.
What does “next-gen” mean in The Witcher 3?
Here, “classic” means the original release before version 4.0, and “next-gen” means the update launched on December 14, 2022. CD PROJEKT RED released it for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a separate update for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Those older-platform versions received some additions, but not the full feature set available on PC and newer consoles. The publisher’s version 4.0 change list documents the update’s features; it should not be read as an inventory of every later patch.
How do graphics and performance differ by platform?
Version 4.0 improves textures, shadows, draw distance, crowd density and other visual details. It adds ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion on PC and newer consoles, but the available effects and graphics modes vary by hardware.

The 4.0 notes do not establish a universal resolution comparison or provide independent, current performance measurements. Actual results should not be inferred from the targets alone.

What PC players gain
ULTRA+ expands settings for areas including background character count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility, terrain, water and detail. DLSS 3 is available only on compatible hardware, so the update does not mean every PC can use every ray-tracing or upscaling feature.
What new content and presentation features are included?
Camera, photo mode and visual changes
The update adds photo mode and an optional camera that stays closer to Geralt and reacts more dynamically to movement and combat. Cutscenes can be paused. Visual revisions include upgraded textures for several main characters, new weather and sky textures, and changes to vegetation, water, meshes, visual effects and environmental lighting.

Quest, appearances and voice-over
Version 4.0 adds the side quest “In The Eternal Fire’s Shadow,” alternative Dandelion and Nilfgaardian armor appearances inspired by Netflix’s series, and Chinese and Korean voice-over. Console availability for the new voice-over varies by region.
Selected community mod content
The publisher says it integrated selected community-created or community-inspired mods, including The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, HD Monsters Reworked, Immersive Real-time Cutscenes, Nitpicker’s Patch and World Map Fixes. It also includes a curated implementation of Full Combat Rebalance 3. These are selected integrations, not unrestricted mod support across every platform.

Which quality-of-life changes are new?
The update makes several routine actions and interface options more flexible:
- Cast Signs quickly without opening the radial menu.
- Use a less cluttered default map filter, loot herbs instantly, and hide the minimap and quest objectives while exploring.
- Choose controller slow-walk and alternate sprint options, and change bombs, bolts and pocket items more easily from the radial menu.
- Scale subtitle, NPC chatter and dialogue-choice text.
On PS5, the update also adds DualSense adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Activity Cards.

Is the next-gen update free, and what is in the Complete Edition?
CD PROJEKT RED said owners of eligible original PC, PS4 and Xbox One releases could upgrade to the next-gen version for free. The Complete Edition launched for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and includes Hearts of Stone, Blood and Wine and previously released extra content. An eligible owner does not need to repurchase the game simply to get the free update.
The publisher also said PS4 and Xbox One received a separate update with some next-gen quality-of-life additions and Netflix-inspired content; Nintendo Switch was scheduled to receive its update later. These older-platform updates are not identical to all PC and newer-console features. Store entitlements can depend on the platform and edition, so check the listing for your account before buying or upgrading. Can you transfer a save to the next-gen version?
Cross-progression lets players upload saves to the cloud after signing in and continue on another platform. For the specific PS4-to-PS5 process, CD PROJEKT RED’s save-transfer instructions require the same CD PROJEKT RED account on both versions, a save uploaded from the PS4 game, and PS4 version 4.04.
- Update the PS4 game to version 4.04 and sign in with your CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a save in the PS4 version so it can upload to the cloud.
- Sign in with the same account in the PS5 version and load the uploaded save.
Those steps describe PS4-to-PS5 transfer; other platform combinations may have different procedures.
