Their renderers and graphics options differ, so settings advice for one may not apply to the other. If performance is below your target, start by turning off ray tracing, then test a supported upscaler and lower demanding visual settings one at a time.
Identify your Witcher 3 build first
“Next-Gen” commonly refers to the 2022 PC update, but CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered on September 28, 2026, for release the following day. The publisher describes Remastered as using native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading; NVIDIA describes the earlier Next-Gen PC renderer as a hybrid DirectX 11/DirectX 12 renderer. The two builds are different settings contexts, not interchangeable labels. CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 update notes and its Remastered announcement identify their respective feature sets; NVIDIA also explains the earlier renderer in its technical overview.
- 2022 Next-Gen: Look for Ultra+ options and, on compatible systems, DLSS 3 and optional ray-traced reflections and shadows.
- Remastered: The announced PC feature set includes path tracing, DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 (with FSR 2 on unsupported GPUs), and Intel XeSS 2.0. Availability depends on the build and hardware; these options are not universal.
Check the installed game version in your launcher or game information screen, and identify your graphics card before following version-specific advice. Remastered has changed system requirements, and feature availability is hardware-dependent; consult the publisher’s announcement for its release details rather than assuming the 2022 requirements or options still apply.
Start with the settings most likely to help your smoothness goal
Turn ray tracing off if performance is falling short
Ray tracing is optional in the 2022 Next-Gen build, while Remastered adds path tracing on PC. If you are not meeting your preferred smoothness target, disable ray tracing or path tracing first and compare how the game feels. These are fidelity features, not prerequisites for playing. The official feature notes do not establish a universal frame-rate gain from switching them off, so judge the result on your own system.

Try an upscaler that your build and GPU support
If an upscaler is available in your graphics options, test it at your chosen output resolution and compare image quality as well as smoothness. Remastered’s announced choices are DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000 Series and newer (with FSR 2 used on unsupported GPUs), and XeSS 2.0. Which options appear depends on the game build and graphics hardware. Do not assume every PC can use every technology.
Lower individual graphics options gradually
On the 2022 Next-Gen build, the official Ultra+ controls include background character count, shadows, grass density, texture quality, foliage visibility range, terrain, water, and detail. Lower one option at a time, then revisit the same area or activity and decide whether the visual trade-off is worthwhile. Keep settings that matter to you and reduce those that do not. The cited official materials do not quantify the performance cost of each option, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking of which one will deliver the largest gain on every PC.

Choose settings by resolution, hardware, and preference
A useful target is not simply the highest preset or a number copied from another PC. Decide what output resolution and level of visual quality you want, then adjust until gameplay feels consistent enough for you. The result will depend on your graphics card, processor, game build, and chosen features. A recommendation without the tested build, CPU, GPU, resolution, and driver is not a reliable prediction for your system.
- Prioritize smoothness over visual effects? Keep ray tracing or path tracing off and test an appropriate supported upscaler.
- Prefer image detail and already have acceptable performance? Retain the settings you value, changing only options whose visual impact is not worth the trade-off to you.
- Still getting unsatisfactory performance? Confirm the build and hardware, then adjust settings in small steps rather than immediately buying a component.
CD PROJEKT RED’s 2022 note about “Performance Mode” targeting 60 FPS with dynamic resolution scaling refers to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, not a PC performance guarantee. It should not be used as a PC target or promise.

When your PC still is not enough
If the game remains unsuitable at settings you are willing to use, cloud streaming is one alternative to running it locally. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW can stream The Witcher 3 with RTX and DLSS for players without an RTX PC. Whether that is a practical option depends on connection quality, latency tolerance, regional availability, the current game catalog, and membership terms; check those details before relying on the service. The publisher’s feature notes establish which graphics technologies and controls are part of each release, but they are not neutral benchmarks across a range of PC hardware. The available evidence does not support a universal “best settings” preset, a guaranteed FPS increase from a particular change, or a blanket recommendation to upgrade. Use the options your build and GPU support, and compare their effect on your own system.
