On PC, CD PROJEKT RED’s October 1, 2026 Hotfix 5.00c reverted a HairWorks change that had caused significant performance and visual problems for some players—but it is not a universal fix. Then compare your PC, resolution, and graphics mode with the developer’s published targets and change demanding settings one at a time.
First confirm which Witcher 3 version you are troubleshooting
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launched on September 29, 2026. It is distinct from the December 2022 next-gen update, which used version 4.0 and later 4.x patches. Advice and patch notes for that older update do not automatically apply to Remastered. The 2026 edition is available for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2; its launch announcement describes a free upgrade for qualifying existing owners and includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered launch announcement identifies the edition and release date.
Before changing settings, write down your platform, edition and version, PC storefront if applicable, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage type, output resolution, graphics preset, and whether ray tracing, path tracing, HairWorks, upscaling, mods, or overlays are enabled. This makes it easier to tell whether an update or a specific change actually affected the symptom.
Update first: what the current PC hotfix actually fixed
CD PROJEKT RED’s PC Hotfix 5.00c, dated October 1, 2026, is listed for Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and Xbox Play Anywhere on PC. Its notes say it reverted a change that had caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. If you use HairWorks, install the applicable update and retest; if you are on a build before that reversion, turning HairWorks off is a reasonable diagnostic step while updating. The notes confirm a specific regression, not that all stuttering or low FPS is fixed.

The same hotfix addressed a save/load failure when the Documents-folder path contained special characters, voiceover volume after navigating pause-menu tabs, Velen visuals, a telemetry setting issue, a GOG achievements-list issue, and launching the Classic (1.32) version. These are separate fixes, not general crash remedies. See the official Hotfix 5.00c notes and check the version shown by your own platform before troubleshooting further. Patch availability can differ by platform and storefront.
For Xbox Play Anywhere PC specifically, an October 1 report based on the developer’s announcement says Patch 5.00b addressed unavailable DLSS and adjusted lighting. Treat that as a storefront/build-specific issue, not a general DLSS fix for every PC edition. The report on the Xbox Play Anywhere PC patch describes that scope.

Check your PC against the target for your resolution and graphics mode
CD PROJEKT RED’s official Remastered PC requirements give targets for different presets, resolutions, and frame rates. They are not a promise that every scene will hold the listed frame rate: the developer says performance fluctuates with the scene and gameplay and varies with system configuration, graphics settings, and output resolution. Its support page states, “Higher resolution will significantly affect FPS.” RT and path-tracing targets use upscaling set to Auto; the path-tracing target also specifies frame generation.

These are CD PROJEKT RED’s targets from its PC requirements page, updated in October 2026—not independent benchmarks. The page also says a GTX 1660 can achieve 60 FPS or higher at Minimum settings, so use the target as a starting comparison, not a guarantee for every location or scene. If your hardware is below the target for the preset and resolution you selected, test a lower-demand combination before concluding that the game is malfunctioning.

Reduce rendering load with controlled tests
- Record your current setup. Note resolution, preset, ray tracing or path tracing, HairWorks, upscaling, and measured frame rate or hitching. Change only one setting at a time so you can identify which change, if any, matters.
- Lower output resolution for a comparison. Keep other settings the same and check whether the frame rate changes. This is useful because the developer explicitly warns that higher output resolution significantly affects FPS.
- Turn off the most demanding features as a diagnostic. Compare your intended mode with ray tracing or path tracing disabled, where those options are available. These are distinct high-load targets in the official requirements; a lower frame rate in them does not, by itself, establish a fault.
- Retest HairWorks after updating. Hotfix 5.00c specifically reverted a HairWorks-related regression for some users. Keep the feature disabled temporarily if needed to compare behavior, then test again on the current applicable build.
- Restore settings one at a time. If a lower-demand configuration improves performance, re-enable features individually until you can identify the trade-off that matters on your system. Do not assume a particular setting caused the problem without that comparison.
The older 2022 version 4.0 documentation lists Ultra+ settings, DLSS 3 on compatible hardware, and AMD FSR 2.1, among other features. That is historical next-gen documentation rather than a complete inventory of current Remastered options; check the settings exposed by your current platform and build. The version 4.0 change list is useful only with that date and edition distinction in mind.
Separate persistent low FPS from brief stutters
Low FPS is sustained performance below your target. A brief hitch is a short frame-time interruption even if the average frame rate looks acceptable. Record which occurs, when it happens, and whether it repeats in the same area; then compare one setting change at a time using the tests above. The official materials establish resolution and graphics mode as relevant variables but do not identify one cause or universal remedy for every stutter.

CD PROJEKT RED now lists an SSD as required under the updated PC requirements and says it supports faster loading, smoother asset streaming, and overall performance. Check that the game is installed on an SSD, but do not treat that requirement as proof an SSD will eliminate every frame-time hitch. The requirements page provides the current storage guidance.

The current official PC hotfix notes identify one save/load failure tied to special characters in the Documents-folder path, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis for crashes in general. If that exact save/load symptom applies, update to the relevant hotfix and check whether it resolves it. For other crashes, record the platform, version, storefront, and circumstances, and consult CD PROJEKT RED support for instructions specific to your edition and platform.

Do not assume that changing drivers, disabling overlays, validating files, or removing mods is a confirmed universal fix based on these notes. A December 2022 hotfix for the older next-gen line was described as improving stability and performance and fixing GOG and Steam overlays; that historical report is not evidence that the same issue or remedy applies to Remastered. The 2022 hotfix announcement belongs to that earlier version line.
Windows 10 and console-specific cautions
Windows 10
CD PROJEKT RED says it no longer officially supports or tests Windows 10. It does not say the game will definitely stop running on Windows 10. The developer also says, “Additionally, we only support components that continue to receive official updates from their manufacturers.” Consult the official PC requirements and support statement when checking OS and component compatibility.
PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2
Do not apply PC settings or PC hardware requirements to a console. The 2022 version 4.0 notes described PS5 and Xbox Series X performance modes targeting 60 FPS with dynamic resolution scaling, plus separate Quality and Performance modes on Xbox Series S without ray-tracing features. Those are dated version 4.0 details, not a definitive statement of the current Remastered modes on every console. Check the latest patch notes and graphics options for your own console and version. The Remastered launch announcement identifies supported platforms; current behavior should be verified against platform-specific updates.
CD PROJEKT RED said in its October 1, 2026 Hotfix 5.00c announcement, “Once again, thank you for your patience as we continue investigating the issues you report.” For unresolved problems, include your build and platform details when contacting official support.
