When The Witcher 3 stops working, first identify what failed: the game may not launch, a local save may not write, a cross-progression save may not appear, or a mod may be disrupting play. Each has a different fix. The steps below follow CD PROJEKT RED Support guidance checked on October 4, 2026; patch-specific behavior can change.
Why won’t The Witcher 3 launch on PC?
Start with the PC’s system requirements. If the computer meets them, CD PROJEKT RED recommends checking graphics drivers, Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables, background programs and startup conflicts. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- Update or reinstall the GPU drivers. Use the driver package for your graphics hardware.
- Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables. The support article recommends uninstalling existing redistributables before reinstalling them. Because these are shared Windows components, take care not to remove software you rely on; follow the vendor’s instructions.
- Close unnecessary programs, especially overlays. Then try launching the game again.
- Try a clean boot. This can help identify conflicts with other startup software.
If the game crashes, shows graphical glitches or still will not start, verify its files through the launcher where you own it. CD PROJEKT RED says corrupted game files can cause these symptoms. The official routes are:

Why does REDlauncher not open?
REDlauncher failing to open is different from the game itself crashing. For this launcher-specific problem, CD PROJEKT RED recommends:
- Close the game and launcher.
- Run Steam, Epic Games or GOG Galaxy as administrator.
- Delete the folder
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Check that no launch parameters are being used, then try starting the game again.
If REDlauncher still will not open, use the official REDlauncher support route.

Why can’t I save my game on PC?
If saving fails locally, check whether Windows security software is blocking The Witcher 3 from writing to protected folders. CD PROJEKT RED specifically points to Controlled folder access in Windows Defender and Bitdefender. In the security app’s Controlled folder access or allowed-apps settings, check whether the game is permitted to access the relevant folders; consult that product’s controls if the labels differ.

Why won’t my cross-progression save load?
Cross-progression links saves through a CD PROJEKT RED account. A save has to be uploaded from one platform before it can be found on another. Check the setup in this order:
- Update The Witcher 3 on both platforms.
- Open Load Game and use the Cross Progression control to connect to a CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Confirm both platforms are connected to the same account. Cross-progression can remain enabled in Options → Gameplay.
- Create a save on the first platform. Check for its cloud icon, which indicates it has uploaded.
- On the other platform, connect to the same account and look for the save under Load Game.
The cloud stores the latest save for each save type, according to the official cross-progression instructions. If the save is visible but will not load, check the game content and mods on the receiving platform before treating it as corrupted.

Check editions and expansion content
A save made with the base game and no expansions can load in Complete Edition. The reverse is not supported if the base-game installation lacks expansions or DLC used by a Complete Edition save. Confirm that the receiving installation includes the content the save depends on. See CD PROJEKT RED’s cross-progression save-loading guidance.
Check the mod set on both platforms
Official guidance says the same set of mods needs to be enabled on both platforms for cross-platform saves. A mod that is missing or incompatible on the receiving platform can prevent the save from loading correctly. When moving a save between PC and console, check the mod’s page for the Available on consoles tag. The cross-platform mod support guide explains the feature and platform availability.

How do I fix a Witcher 3 mod crash, broken quest or UI issue?
Mods can cause crashes or launch failures, interrupt quest progression, or make the interface missing or incorrect. They can also leave effects in a save that remain after a mod is disabled. To isolate a problem without discarding progress:
- Preserve an earlier save before changing the mod setup.
- In the in-game Mods menu, disable or unsubscribe from installed mods, then check whether the issue remains.
- If the problem persists, try loading a save from before that mod was used.
- For a player-created mod issue, contact its creator or use the mod’s reporting route. CD PROJEKT RED says it cannot directly manage or resolve problems rooted in player-created mods.
Keep mods updated, especially after a game update. CD PROJEKT RED advises: “We advise against installing mods that alter quest structure mid-playthrough.” For third-party PC mods installed outside the in-game Mods menu, follow the official mod troubleshooting and clean-install guidance; do not delete saves as a first step.
Using the in-game Mods feature
The in-game Mods feature is powered by mod.io and is documented for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Installing mods requires connecting a CD PROJEKT RED account to mod.io. Subscribe through the in-game Mods menu and restart the game; use the Installed list and its checkbox to confirm whether a mod is enabled.
