If The Witcher 3 won’t launch on PC, first identify what is failing: REDlauncher, the game after it starts, a missing-DLC check, or a modded installation. The right fix depends on the symptom. Start with low-impact checks and verify game files before considering a clean reinstall.
Identify where The Witcher 3 launch fails
Use the message on screen and what happens after you click Play to choose a path. A REDlauncher that never opens is a different problem from a game process that starts and then crashes.

CD PROJEKT RED says corrupted game files can cause crashes, graphical glitches, or an inability to launch. Its support pages provide different remedies for these branches, rather than one universal fix: verify game files, troubleshoot REDlauncher, resolve missing DLC errors, and report mod issues.
Fix REDlauncher when it will not open
If the launcher itself fails before the game starts, CD PROJEKT RED recommends these steps. Removing the REDlauncher folder is not the same as repairing the game installation.

- Close the storefront and run Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or GOG GALAXY as administrator.
- Delete
%localappdata%ProgramsCD Projekt Red. - Make sure no launch parameters are being used for the game.
- Try again. If the launcher still fails, contact CD PROJEKT RED Support.
Repair missing or corrupted game files
Use the verification or repair command in the storefront that owns your copy. The scan may take several minutes.

These instructions are from CD PROJEKT RED’s file-verification guide. If verification does not resolve a startup crash, continue with the relevant checks below.
Fix a “missing DLCs” error
Use this branch only when the game reports that DLCs are missing. The publisher’s sequence is to remove installed mods, remove the DLC folder from the game installation directory, and then verify the game files using the storefront instructions above. Verification should restore the required files. Do not delete the folder as a general crash fix. See the publisher’s missing-DLC instructions.

Fix The Witcher 3 crashes on startup
Check requirements and close unnecessary programs
Compare your PC with the publisher’s current updated PC requirements. CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required for the game’s latest technical enhancements; that is a requirements check, not proof that storage is the cause of every launch problem.
The requirements page also says Windows 10 is no longer officially supported. The game may continue to run on Windows 10, but the publisher no longer develops or tests it on that OS and does not guarantee compatibility or performance. Neither the SSD requirement nor Windows 10’s support status establishes the cause of an individual crash.
Close nonessential applications, including antivirus or antimalware software, and check for malware if relevant. Verify the game files if you have not already. If the crash continues, try the additional steps below.

Refresh drivers and runtime components
CD PROJEKT RED recommends a clean GPU-driver reinstall for persistent crashes and notes that an older driver can sometimes help. Its driver guide says: “If you experience crashes or performance issues, make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed.” See Update GPU drivers for the publisher’s guidance.
The launch guide also recommends reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables. Follow the publisher’s game-not-launching guidance for that step.

Test for overlays or background software conflicts
Disable unnecessary programs and overlays, then try launching again. CD PROJEKT RED names GeForce Experience, RivaTuner, MSI Afterburner, MSI Gaming app, and Fraps as examples. It also recommends trying a clean boot to help isolate interference from background software. These checks are especially useful when the failure began after changing software that runs alongside the game.

If an error code appears, record it and include it in a support request. The publisher’s separate crash guide and launch guide cover these troubleshooting steps.

Test the game without mods before changing other parts of the installation:
- Disable or unsubscribe installed mods through the in-game Mod Menu.
- Try launching the game and check whether the problem persists.
- If you keep using mods, update them, particularly after a game update.
CD PROJEKT RED warns: “Using mods may lead to unexpected, incorrect behavior of the game and their consequences may be kept in save files.” Disabling a mod therefore may not reverse changes it made to a save; an earlier save from before you used the mod may be needed. The publisher also advises against installing mods that alter quest structure during a playthrough. If the problem began after using third-party PC mods, its guidance is to perform a clean install without those mods. See the mod-issue guidance and clean-install instructions.

Use a clean reinstall only as a last resort
A clean reinstall removes game folders, so protect local saves first. Follow the publisher’s sequence rather than uninstalling and immediately deleting files:
- Back up saves. The usual location is
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. - Disable The Witcher 3 cloud saves.
- Uninstall the game through its storefront.
- Remove the game folder from the client directory and the The Witcher 3 folder from Documents.
- Restart the PC and reinstall the game without mods.
- Launch and test the clean installation before restoring saves. Re-enable cloud saves afterward if desired.
If Windows permissions prevent installation on the OS partition, CD PROJEKT RED suggests installing at the drive root instead of inside nested folders. Follow the complete clean-install guide for the applicable storefront and folder details.
