Guinness World Records recognized it as the largest Game Boy in its 2018 Gamer’s Edition; the machine measures 1.01 metres tall, 0.62 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep.
How big is the Game Boy XXL?
Guinness World Records reported the machine’s dimensions on 21 September 2017: 1.01 metres high, 0.62 metres wide and 0.2 metres deep. Guinness describes it as approximately 6.75 times the size of the classic Game Boy, with a volume of 120 litres. Guinness World Records’ 2017 report details the build, and the record appears in the largest Game Boy record listing.
How does the world’s largest Game Boy run?
A Raspberry Pi inside the enlarged external connector socket runs the Game Boy XXL. Guinness describes the result as fully functional, but its coverage does not identify the Pi model, operating system, display panel, wiring, or software image. It also does not establish whether the machine accepts original Game Boy cartridges, so cartridge compatibility should not be assumed.
How was the Game Boy XXL built?
Ünal made the enclosure using his school laboratory and laser-cutting machines. The available Guinness coverage does not give a complete bill of materials or enough construction detail to reproduce the device exactly.
What is it like to play?
The controls work, but their scale makes them physically demanding. Ünal told Guinness that after an hour of pressing the giant buttons, his arms could lose feeling—a reminder that a functioning oversized console is not necessarily comfortable for extended play.
Who built the Game Boy XXL?
Ilhan Ünal, a Belgian multimedia and communication science student and weekend software and hardware developer, built the project. He explained the personal inspiration behind it: “The Game Boy was a huge part of many people’s childhoods, including my own. I was obsessed with my Game Boy as a kid, so I wanted to create something that would put a smile on little Ilhan’s face, and hopefully on the face of anyone who is a big kid at heart.”
