The headline refers to the ZX Mechtrum, a custom 3D-printed case and mechanical-keyboard conversion for an original ZX Spectrum 48K. It is not a new official Sinclair computer, a complete replacement motherboard, or a universal USB keyboard. The project houses compatible Spectrum hardware in a wedge-style enclosure, replaces the original rubber keyboard with mechanical switches, and preserves the machine’s distinctive command legends.
Lee Smith’s Workshop offered complete kits, but its listing shows the $104 kit as sold out and says it will not be produced again. A $7 digital file download is listed separately, leaving a DIY route for owners who can print the case and source the keyboard parts.
What the ZX Mechtrum actually is
Reported by Hackaday on December 27, 2022, the ZX Mechtrum is a replacement enclosure built around an original ZX Spectrum mainboard. Its mechanical keyboard connects through the Spectrum’s existing keyboard connectors, so the documented conversion does not require modifications to the motherboard.
The case has the Spectrum’s familiar wedge-like character, while the keyboard uses modern mechanical switches and modified ManuFerHi N-Go keycaps. The special legends matter: Spectrum keys do more than produce letters. For example, the K key also represents LIST, +, LEN, and SCREEN$.

A replaceable rear panel can accommodate custom layouts for modifications such as composite or VGA output. The case does not generate those signals; the installed board must already provide them or be modified to do so.
The word “finally” belongs to the headline, not to a literal history claim. The original 48K’s rubber keyboard was widely criticized, but period aftermarket keyboard cases existed, and later Spectrum+ and Amstrad-era +2 and +3 models used more conventional keyboards.
Why replace the original keyboard?
The 48K Spectrum’s small rubber keys are distinctive but shallow, dense, and demanding for extended typing. That matters particularly when programming in BASIC, where commands, symbols, editing functions, and multiple key modes are packed into a compact layout.

A mechanical conversion improves the physical feel and may be more suitable for regular programming. It does not change the Spectrum’s keyboard matrix, command-entry system, display, storage, or other limitations. It is a usability upgrade rather than a modernization of the computer itself.
How the conversion is assembled
The documented build combines the Mechtrum case with a keyboard PCB originally designed for the ZX Max 128 project. The related PCBWay project provides Gerber files, a bill of materials, and manufacturing information under a CC BY-SA license. It describes the PCB as intended for the Superfo Harlequin 128, ZX Nuvo 128, and ZX Max 128, while also stating that it can be used with an original Spectrum and other clones.
A typical build involves:
- Checking the Spectrum board revision and measuring the board, ports, and mounting points.
- Preparing the keyboard PCB, mechanical switches, and correctly labeled keycaps.
- Mounting the original board in the printed enclosure with suitable supports or spacers.
- Connecting the keyboard through the original Spectrum keyboard connectors.
- Fitting the rear panel and checking that every port, switch, and cable has clearance.
- Testing power, keyboard input, video, and heat behavior before extended use.
This should not be treated as a guaranteed zero-solder project. The keyboard connection is described as requiring no motherboard modification, but a DIY build may still involve soldering switches, assembling or ordering the PCB, modifying keycaps, installing fasteners, and preparing the power circuitry.

Compatibility: which boards fit?
The vendor specifically reports testing the case with original ZX Spectrum 48K Issue 3 and Issue 4 boards. Compatibility with Issue 2 is described as uncertain.

Physical fit alone is not enough. Before committing to a print or PCB order, check board dimensions, port positions, keyboard connector placement, heat-sink height, reset and power arrangements, video modifications, and keyboard-matrix wiring. A clone can fit the enclosure while misaligning the rear panel or failing to work with the keyboard PCB.
Do not ignore the PLA and heat warning
The vendor says the enclosure is made from PLA and warns that the original heat-sink and regulator arrangement should be replaced with a switching regulator such as a Traco unit. The vendor presents this as important because of the PLA case and as an improvement for the Spectrum generally.

That is a board-specific electrical modification, not a cosmetic installation step. Inspect the exact board revision and verify the replacement regulator’s voltage, current capacity, polarity, insulation, mounting, and wiring before powering the machine. Do not assume a particular Traco model is the only safe choice, and do not operate an unverified PLA build unattended near heat sources.

The Lee Smith’s Workshop listing identifies the complete kit as including the printed case, mechanical keyboard, keycaps, screws, and rubber feet. The page displays a listed price of $104, but marks the kit out of stock and says it will not be sold again.

The same listing shows a digital download of the 3D files for $7. Availability and checkout status can change, so treat that as the price displayed on the listing rather than a guaranteed current purchase option. The files are not a complete computer: a buyer still needs printing or a print service, a compatible Spectrum board, keyboard PCB, switches, keycaps, fasteners, and appropriate power and thermal preparation.

The keyboard PCB project offers a separate maker route, but ordering a PCB is not the same as obtaining a finished Mechtrum keyboard. Switches, keycap profiles, legends, assembly, and case clearance all need to be verified together.
Who should build one?
- Choose a Mechtrum-style conversion if you already own a compatible board, want a mechanical typing feel, value Spectrum-specific legends, and are comfortable with 3D printing and electrical checks.
- Keep a stock restoration if collector authenticity matters, the original case is good, or you mainly play games and want the original tactile experience.
- Use an external keyboard solution if the original case must remain untouched and reversibility is important.
- Choose a modern Spectrum recreation if you need new production, HDMI, modern storage, or an easier-to-source complete system and do not require an original motherboard and ULA.
Verdict
The ZX Mechtrum is best understood as a clever, attractive restoration project—not a retail Spectrum replacement. It solves the 48K’s awkward keyboard feel while retaining the machine’s unusual legends and original hardware, but the complete kit is discontinued, compatibility is revision-dependent, and the PLA enclosure makes power and heat management essential. For programmers and makers who already own suitable Spectrum hardware, the printable-file route remains compelling. For collectors or plug-and-play buyers, a stock restoration or modern recreation is likely the better choice.
