Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn Atomfall, your best first move is to learn how its Leads work, explore Slatten Dale, and talk to people before spending scarce supplies on fights. Set the difficulty and exploration guidance to suit you, then follow the clues that interest you: Rebellion says the world can be explored at your own pace, and its Lead paths are optional.
Choose settings that fit how you want to play
Atomfall offers five presets—Sightseer, Investigator, Brawler, Survivor, and Veteran—along with customizable settings. Rebellion recommends Survivor, but that is a suggestion, not a required starting point. You can change settings later in Options, so you can adjust if combat pressure, survival demands, or navigation assistance is not working for you. Rebellion’s guidance, published by Xbox Wire, describes the available approaches.

Guidance is a preference, not a measure of skill. Survivor does not add map waypoints by default; if you would rather have more direction, adjust the Exploration options. You can also place markers manually, which appear on your compass.
Leave the bunker and learn how Leads work
Once outside the bunker, you enter Slatten Dale. Rather than expecting a conventional mission list to dictate your route, pay attention to conversations, recordings, letters, and other items. These reveal Leads: information threads that help connect the mystery and suggest places or people to investigate. As Rebellion senior programmer Rich May put it, “Atomfall doesn’t have a traditional quest or mission system. Instead, we have Leads – snippets of information that you will uncover as you explore the world.” The Leads are optional, so follow the ones that appeal to you.

Use early conversations to find your bearings
Look for the ringing phone box and speak with Nat. His conversation can point you toward Molly, a trader. Answering the phone is your choice; the available guidance does not establish it as a mandatory or irreversible step.
Investigate Wyndham before taking on distant dangers
Rebellion recommends checking places such as the church, shops, bakery, and pub in Wyndham Village for people and clues. Talk to locals and inspect useful records and objects. This gives you a chance to build Leads and get oriented before choosing whether to travel toward a riskier objective.

Learn barter and manage limited carrying space
There is no money-based shop loop: trading works by barter, and different traders may value the same item differently. Molly can offer a flashlight and metal detector, according to Epic’s beginner guide. Compare what a trader wants with what you are willing to part with rather than assuming every item has a fixed cash value.
Epic’s 2025 guide describes an inventory limit of four large-weapon slots and 12 slots for other items. Make those spaces count:

- Keep your animals and your itors happy, with hundreds of buildings, foliage, path and enclosure decorations
- Hire the perfect employees to deal with a variety of life events
- Control everything that happens in your park, from what your animals eat to what eats your animals…
- Decide whether you want to run your Zoo above board... or break the law and pocket the extra cash
- Avoid carrying duplicate weapons unless you have a reason to keep them.
- Use food rather than holding onto low-yield portions that take up space.
- Craft with ingredients when useful, instead of letting surplus materials crowd out other items.
- Put equipment and supplies you do not need immediately into pneumatic tubes for storage.
Keeping a practical set of tools and supplies on hand gives you flexibility; storing surplus means you do not have to discard everything that may be useful later.
Choose whether to fight, sneak, or withdraw
Not every encounter has to become a fight. Check enemy numbers and weapons, then decide whether the route or item you want is worth the likely cost in health and ammunition. You can plan an approach, sneak around a group, or retreat and return better prepared. Rebellion says a no-kill playthrough is possible, though “extremely challenging”; treat that as an option for players who want the challenge, not as the expected way to play.

Do not assume all soldiers are hostile. Epic’s guide says Protocol soldiers in Wyndham are friendly by default, although entering restricted areas can change their response. Pay attention to where you are and how people react before drawing a weapon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a metal detector only if the detour suits you
A metal detector can help locate buried supplies, scrap, and ammunition. Rebellion says it can be found or obtained through barter, so it is useful but not essential to begin exploring. If you want to seek out a free one, PC Gamer’s March 2025 guide places it on an island in a pool north of the Slate Mine Caves. That optional detour has nearby hazards, including leeches and outlaws, according to the guide; weigh the risk against your readiness and interest in scavenging. Exact item placements can vary with game updates.

A flexible opening plan
- Set your preferred experience. Choose a preset or customize the combat, survival, and exploration guidance; you can change options later.
- Orient yourself in Slatten Dale. Consider the phone box and talk with Nat to pick up a lead toward Molly.
- Visit Molly. Learn how barter works and consider which offered items would actually help your current plans.
- Explore Wyndham for information. Check the church, shops, bakery, and pub, and speak with people or inspect clues that catch your attention.
- Mark useful places. Use manual map markers if you want to remember a location, or increase Exploration guidance if limited waypoints are frustrating.
- Make fights serve a purpose. Observe, sneak, bypass, or withdraw when a direct fight would cost more than it gains.
- Keep your inventory useful. Carry immediate needs, craft when appropriate, and store surplus in pneumatic tubes.
- Consider the detector detour later. Seek the optional Slate Mine Caves-area location if you are prepared for nearby hazards and want to search for caches.
Atomfall is a fictionalized action-survival mystery set in 1962, five years after the 1957 Windscale disaster; the story’s events are fictional, not a retelling of historical events. Xbox Wire’s overview and Epic’s beginner guide provide further details on the game and its systems.
