Short answer: Horizon OS v83 appeared to fix—or at least substantially reduce—the recurring “low memory” crashes reported by some Meta Quest 2 and Quest 3 owners. However, the first evidence came from a limited Public Test Channel trial, not a formal Meta confirmation that the underlying bug was fixed for every headset, game, or workload.

Stable v83 began rolling out in late November 2025. If your Quest still crashes, treat v83 as a promising mitigation rather than a guaranteed cure, and avoid joining the Public Test Channel solely to chase the fix.

What was the Meta Quest low-memory bug?

Users reported that VR games would unexpectedly close and display a “low memory” warning, even when the headset appeared to have sufficient available memory. The crashes could happen during ordinary gameplay, not only after deliberately running several demanding apps.

Reports involved Quest 2 and Quest 3 headsets, although that does not mean every owner was affected. Restarting the headset sometimes helped temporarily, but did not always prevent the problem from returning. The behavior was described in user reports rather than classified publicly by Meta as a single confirmed incident.

A low-memory warning also does not necessarily mean the headset’s physical memory was completely full. It can indicate that a system process failed to release memory, that usable memory became fragmented or unavailable, that a game exceeded its practical allocation, or that Horizon OS terminated an app to recover resources.

Android Central’s coverage reported that complaints accumulated over several months, with discussions dating approximately to May 2025. Some users associated the increase with the v76 period, but that is a correlation and user theory—not proof that v76 caused the issue.

The suspected connection to multitasking

One leading theory involved a memory leak or other memory-management problem in Quest system software. Users also suspected Meta’s “seamless multitasking” feature, introduced in v74, which allowed floating 2D windows such as browser, video, chat, or feed apps to remain available while a VR game was running.

That theory is plausible because keeping multiple 2D applications alive can increase memory pressure. But the available evidence does not establish that seamless multitasking caused the crashes, nor does it prove that the problem was a conventional memory leak.

What happened in v83?

The evidence that v83 helped came initially from a v83 Public Test Channel build tested in early November 2025. In the hands-on test, several 2D windows were left open while Asgard’s Wrath 2 was played.

The important change was not that memory pressure disappeared. Instead, when memory became constrained, the background 2D apps reloaded while the VR game continued running. The test continued until the headset battery was depleted without the game producing the previous low-memory crash.

That is meaningful evidence that Horizon OS had improved how it prioritized or recycled memory. It is not a controlled benchmark, however. The test involved one headset, one major game, and one multitasking scenario. It did not prove that every Quest 2, Quest 3, affected game, or long-term sleep-and-wake cycle would behave identically.

It also did not prove that Meta had eliminated the suspected leak. The available evidence does not show a dedicated Meta release-note entry or formal statement explicitly saying that the low-memory bug was fixed in v83.

v74, v76, and v83: the timeline

  • v74: Meta introduced seamless multitasking with floating 2D windows during VR use.
  • Around May 2025: User reports about recurring low-memory crashes began accumulating, according to contemporary coverage and discussions.
  • v76 period: Some users linked the increase in crashes to this firmware period, but no confirmed causal connection was established.
  • Early November 2025: A v83 Public Test Channel build appeared to handle memory pressure more gracefully in an extended hands-on test.
  • Late November 2025: Stable v83 began rolling out gradually. UploadVR reported on the stable rollout and noted that availability could be staged.
  • August 2026: The defensible conclusion remains that v83 appeared to fix or substantially mitigate the problem—not that Meta had publicly confirmed a universal fix.

Should you join the Public Test Channel?

For most Quest owners, no. Install the latest stable firmware offered to your headset rather than switching to PTC just to pursue this possible fix.

PTC software is designed for testing and can introduce new bugs. More importantly, returning from a test build to stable software may require a factory reset. That can mean restoring your data and reinstalling games, so you should not make the switch without accepting that risk and confirming that your important data is backed up.

PTC can make sense for experienced users who are comfortable troubleshooting and who need early access to software changes. But the original v83 evidence was promising rather than conclusive, so it is not a strong reason for most people to leave stable firmware.

  1. Open the headset’s system settings and check the installed Horizon OS version.
  2. Install the latest stable update offered to the device.
  3. Restart the headset after the update completes.
  4. Launch the VR game that previously crashed, initially without opening multiple background 2D apps.
  5. If it remains stable, add browser, video, chat, or other 2D windows gradually rather than all at once.
  6. Record the headset model, Horizon OS version, exact error message, game, and whether the crash occurred during gameplay, app launch, or multitasking.

This approach cannot prove that an update fixed the operating-system problem, but it can show whether the previous workload is still reproducibly unstable.

What to do if crashes continue

  1. Reboot the headset. This clears temporary system state, although it is not proof of a permanent repair.
  2. Close unnecessary 2D windows and background apps. This reduces memory pressure and is easy to reverse.
  3. Test the affected game without multitasking. If it only crashes after several floating apps are open, memory pressure becomes a more plausible factor.
  4. Update the game. A title-specific defect can look like a system memory problem.
  5. Check free storage. Low storage is not the same as low runtime memory, but unusual storage conditions can complicate updates and app behavior.
  6. Try another demanding VR title. A crash limited to one game points more strongly toward application data or a game-specific defect.
  7. Capture the details. Note the headset model, firmware version, game version, steps that trigger the crash, and the precise warning.
  8. Contact Meta Support. Provide those details instead of describing the problem only as a general “Quest crash.”

Do not factory-reset the headset as a first response. A reset is disruptive, and the available evidence does not show that it definitely cures this particular problem. Back up or verify your data before considering one, and only after less destructive troubleshooting has failed.

Other explanations are possible

A low-memory message or game crash does not automatically establish a system-wide memory leak. Similar symptoms can result from:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A game-specific software defect.
  • Corrupted application data.
  • A problematic headset update.
  • Excessive multitasking.
  • A title exceeding its practical memory budget.
  • Hardware instability.
  • A different Quest system issue that users have described as “low memory.”

Tracking, Guardian, passthrough, and update failures should also be investigated separately rather than folded into this story simply because they appeared after a firmware update. Meta’s community announcements and release-notes reference are better places to check for official software information.

What v83 did—and did not—prove

What the evidence supports What remains unproven
A v83 PTC test kept Asgard’s Wrath 2 running while background apps reloaded under memory pressure. That every Quest 2 and Quest 3 received the same result.
Stable v83 later rolled out gradually. That Meta released v83 specifically as a documented fix for this bug.
The update appeared to improve memory handling in the tested scenario. That the underlying cause was definitively a memory leak.
Using fewer background windows is a reasonable temporary mitigation. That reducing multitasking repairs the underlying software.

Later Horizon OS releases may include additional changes, but the available evidence does not isolate whether they preserved, regressed, or further improved this specific behavior. Similarly, v83 developer documentation describes other system and API changes, but does not by itself confirm a fix for the low-memory issue.

Bottom line

Horizon OS v83 was a credible response to the Quest low-memory problem because an extended test showed the operating system reloading background apps instead of crashing the VR game. Stable v83 subsequently reached users, but the evidence was limited and did not include a formal Meta confirmation or a broad device-by-device comparison.

For most owners, the sensible course is to remain on stable firmware, update normally, reboot, and test the workload that previously failed. Join PTC only if you understand the risks—including a possible factory reset—and still need early access. If crashes continue after updating, investigate the game, multitasking pattern, and firmware version before assuming the headset has defective hardware.
