Short answer: Nukem9’s dlssg-to-fsr3 can substitute AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation for a game’s NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation implementation on documented NVIDIA RTX 16-, 20-, and 30-series hardware. It does not unlock official DLSS 3, work in every DLSS title, or guarantee clean performance. Compatibility is per game and per version, and the project warns that multiplayer use can risk account bans.

What the mod actually does

Native NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation is primarily associated with RTX 40-series hardware. RTX 20- and 30-series cards can use DLSS Super Resolution in many games, but normally cannot enable NVIDIA’s frame-generation path. AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation is designed to be more vendor-agnostic, yet a game must expose and integrate it. Nukem9’s mod provides a workaround when a title already contains a compatible DLSS-G/Streamline integration.

The project replaces NVIDIA’s nvngx_dlssg implementation with an AMD FSR 3 Frame Generation implementation. In simplified terms:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. The game supplies motion vectors, depth, UI information and other frame-generation inputs through its existing DLSS/Streamline path.
  2. The mod intercepts the DLSS Frame Generation DLL call.
  3. The replacement passes those inputs to FSR 3 Frame Generation.
  4. The game presents the generated frame as if its existing frame-generation option had produced it.

This is a third-party wrapper, not a driver feature and not official support from NVIDIA or AMD. Because it depends on how each game loads Streamline and presents frames, it is inherently more fragile than native integration.

Supported GPUs: the headline is too broad

The project’s documented support list includes NVIDIA RTX 16-series, RTX 20-series and RTX 30-series cards. That includes common models such as the RTX 2060, 2070, 2080, 3060, 3070 and 3080, subject to game compatibility.

“Any NVIDIA DLSS 3 title” should therefore be read as marketing shorthand, not a guarantee. GTX cards are not equivalent to the listed RTX hardware, and RTX 40-series owners generally have a better option: native NVIDIA Frame Generation. Do not assume RTX 50-series or newer cards are supported simply because they are newer; check the project’s current documentation for your exact hardware.

The original mod is not a universal AMD or Intel solution. Tools such as OptiScaler and DLSS Enabler offer separate compatibility-layer approaches, with different requirements and failure modes.

Games: check the compatibility list first

Use the project’s Game Compatibility List as the authority. It records tested game and mod versions, installation methods, whether frame generation works, HDR status and game-specific notes. Examples appearing in the project’s compatibility documentation include Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, Dragon’s Dogma II, Starfield, Dying Light 2, Returnal, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Monster Hunter Wilds.

Those are examples, not a universal supported-games list. A game update can break a previously working hook, and one title may need a different DLL or folder from another. Consult the individual instructions—for example, the project’s pages for Hogwarts Legacy and Dragon’s Dogma II.

Installation: a safe universal starting point

Back up the game directory, or at minimum copy the original DLLs somewhere safe. Download the current archive from the project’s official distribution links—GitHub currently points downloadable builds to Nexus Mods. The indexed GitHub release history lists Build 0.130, dated March 16, 2025; verify the archive’s own release notes and date rather than assuming that remains the newest build.

  1. Open the downloaded archive and read its included README.
  2. Choose the proxy DLL appropriate for the game, commonly version.dll, winhttp.dll or dbghelp.dll.
  3. Find the folder containing the game’s executable.
  4. For the generic method, copy dlssg_to_fsr3_amd_is_better.dll and the selected proxy DLL beside that executable.
  5. Launch the game and check for dlssg_to_fsr3.log in the game directory.

This is not a one-size-fits-all recipe. Some compatibility entries require sl.interposer.dll, another proxy name, a game-specific subfolder or an additional workaround. Follow the exact entry for your game before experimenting with alternative files.

In-game settings and a realistic test

Enable the game’s existing DLSS Frame Generation option if the compatibility instructions say to do so; the mod substitutes the implementation behind that option. DLSS Super Resolution can often remain enabled. You do not necessarily need to switch the upscaler to FSR—the mod primarily targets FSR 3 Frame Generation—but each game controls which combinations are allowed.

Record a baseline with frame generation disabled, then compare:

  • Base rendered FPS and frame-time consistency
  • Displayed FPS with generation enabled
  • Input latency, if your overlay or monitor can measure it
  • Artifacts during camera pans, combat, particles, foliage, hair, reflections and disocclusion

FSR 3 inserts generated frames between rendered frames; it does not make the game simulation or CPU work run twice as fast. A high displayed number can look smoother while controls still feel closer to the base frame rate. It is most useful when the underlying frame rate is already reasonably stable. Low base FPS, CPU bottlenecks and uneven frame pacing remain problems.

Image quality, latency and stability trade-offs

Generated frames are interpolated, not fully rendered. Incomplete motion-vector data can cause ghosting or distortions around subtitles, HUD elements, crosshairs, transparent effects, particles, hair, foliage and reflections. Frame generation can improve perceived smoothness without making input equally responsive. Native developer-integrated FSR 3/3.1 or DLSS Frame Generation is usually better tested and more consistent.

The project changelog documents fixes involving HDR, texture-format conversion, distortion-field resources, camera values, Vulkan support and game-specific crashes. Those fixes demonstrate how many edge cases exist. HDR and unusual render targets may still require title-specific workarounds.

Troubleshooting

The Frame Generation option is missing

Confirm that the game exposes DLSS Frame Generation at all, that the proxy DLL matches the compatibility entry, and that the files are beside the correct executable. A newer Streamline layout or an unlisted game build may require a different package. On AMD or Intel hardware, the original mod alone is not the appropriate assumption.

The game crashes on launch

Remove the mod files and test the unmodified game. Common causes include a proxy collision with an overlay or another mod, incorrect placement, a game update, anti-cheat blocking DLL injection, or a conflicting existing DLL. Universal proxies can also disable the Epic Games Store overlay because of hooking conflicts.

The toggle appears, but no frames are generated

Inspect dlssg_to_fsr3.log, verify the exact game-version entry, confirm the correct executable directory and check whether another upscaler or frame-generation mod is intercepting the same call. Follow any hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling requirement stated by that game’s instructions.

Severe artifacts or corruption

Try the game-specific package instead of the universal one, temporarily disable HDR, remove overlays, and match the game and mod versions recommended by the compatibility page. If the problem persists, restore the original files.

Multiplayer warning

The project explicitly advises against multiplayer use and warns that account bans are possible. Anti-cheat behavior and policies vary, so do not use the mod in competitive or protected online games unless the developer clearly permits it. Treat offline single-player titles as the safer use case.

Uninstall and recovery

  1. Exit the game and its launcher.
  2. Delete only the mod files copied into the game folder.
  3. Restore any original DLLs you renamed or backed up.
  4. Remove registry or compatibility tweaks installed by an older release.
  5. If the game will not start, verify its files through Steam, Epic Games Store or the relevant launcher.

Alternatives

  • Native DLSS Frame Generation: the preferred option for RTX 40-series owners when supported.
  • Native FSR 3 or FSR 3.1: preferable whenever the developer integrates it, because motion vectors, UI composition and frame pacing are tested in the game.
  • OptiScaler: a broader, more complex community layer for substituting multiple upscaling and frame-generation paths.
  • DLSS Enabler: another separate tool that may expose replacement paths in selected games; it is not interchangeable with the original mod.
  • Hardware upgrade: consider newer hardware for native features, but buying a GPU solely for this workaround defeats much of its purpose.

Verdict

Nukem9’s dlssg-to-fsr3 is a valuable per-game workaround for supported RTX 16-, 20- and 30-series owners who lack native DLSS Frame Generation. Use it only when your exact game version appears compatible, your base frame rate is acceptable and you can tolerate troubleshooting. It is not an “any NVIDIA” unlock, it does not guarantee doubled FPS or perfect image quality, and it is a poor choice for anti-cheat-protected multiplayer.
