The deal is for the Razer BlackShark V2 X, a wired gaming headset with a 3.5mm connection—not the wireless BlackShark V2 Pro or the USB version. It has appeared for $39.99 at Best Buy in Quartz, while Razer’s U.S. product page listed the standard model at $59.99 when checked. That makes under $40 a sale price, not a permanent price; verify the model and checkout total before buying.
What the under-$40 deal is—and what it is not
The headline refers to the standard Razer BlackShark V2 X: an analog, wired headset with a 3.5mm plug. It is not the BlackShark V2, BlackShark V2 X USB, Xbox-licensed variant, BlackShark V2 Pro, or BlackShark V2 HyperSpeed. Listings can use very similar names, so check the connector and exact model before ordering.
Best Buy listed the Quartz version at $39.99, down from a displayed comparable value of $59.99. Razer’s U.S. product page listed the standard BlackShark V2 X at $59.99; earlier deal coverage reported prices around $36.99–$39.98. These are retailer- and time-specific prices, not a guarantee that every color or seller will be under $40 now. The Best Buy page also showed 4.6 out of 5 from 3,879 reviews when checked, but customer ratings are not controlled product testing.
At roughly $40, it is a strong value proposition for someone who wants capable game audio, a built-in chat mic, and broad wired compatibility. The trade is straightforward: you get a lightweight, simple headset, not wireless convenience, premium materials, or extensive controls.

What you get for the money
The standard V2 X has closed over-ear cups, memory-foam cushions, a fixed HyperClear cardioid microphone, and Razer TriForce 50mm drivers. Razer specifies an approximate weight of 240g, an analog 3.5mm connection, and basic volume and microphone-mute controls. The mic is attached rather than detachable, and the earcups provide passive isolation—not active noise cancellation.
Razer’s published specifications for the BlackShark V2 X family list a 12Hz–28kHz headphone frequency response, 32-ohm impedance at 1kHz, and 100dB SPL/mW sensitivity at 1kHz. For the microphone, Razer lists a 100Hz–10kHz response and a unidirectional pickup pattern; the cable is 1.3m (4.27ft). Why reviewers say it sounds better than its price suggests
A 50mm driver is a substantial component for a budget headset, but driver diameter alone does not determine sound quality. The more relevant point is that this headset is tuned for gaming: impact, audible dialogue, and useful positional cues matter more here than a strictly neutral music presentation. Closed cups and padding can also help make games feel immersive and reduce some surrounding noise. Because the connection is wired, there is no headset battery to charge and no wireless pairing to manage.

In its budget-headset testing, PC Gamer praised the V2 X’s punchy sound, comfort, ability to play loudly without obvious distortion, microphone, and value. Those are that reviewer’s listening and use observations, not a laboratory measurement or a promise that every listener will hear the same thing. “Sounds way more expensive” is best read as a favorable subjective judgment: it does not mean the headset performs like a premium model in every respect.
Its tuning may not suit listeners who want neutral music playback, and fit is personal. Ear shape, glasses, and head size can affect how the cups seal and feel over a long session. If possible, check the fit and return terms before committing.
What “7.1 surround sound” means here
The V2 X connects through a conventional analog headset jack; it does not contain a set of separate physical surround speakers. Razer’s 7.1 claim refers to virtual spatial audio that depends on software or the platform. Razer’s support material references Windows Sonic on compatible systems. Console spatial-audio options likewise depend on the console and game.

Stereo is the baseline. Virtual surround can help some players with spatial cues, but it can sound processed or less natural in other games. Try the game’s own audio options and the platform’s spatial-audio setting separately rather than stacking effects, and do not pay extra for the “7.1” label alone.

The fixed HyperClear mic is designed to emphasize speech from the front and reduce pickup from other directions. That makes it a practical choice for multiplayer chat and everyday calls, not a detachable or broadcast-grade recording mic. PC Gamer described its performance favorably in its review, but your results also depend on mic position, room noise, voice-chat software, and the input hardware in your controller or computer.
If your voice is missing or very quiet, check the headset’s mute control, select the correct microphone input in the game or operating system, and confirm the app has microphone permission. A desktop PC with separate headphone and microphone sockets may need a compatible splitter; a device with a combined headset jack generally does not.

Which devices can you connect it to?
The 3.5mm version is designed for compatible headset jacks on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5 controllers, Xbox One and Series controllers, Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. Best Buy lists PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One compatibility. The actual connection depends on the port: a desktop with separate headphone and mic ports may need a splitter, while some newer phones and tablets require a USB-C or Lightning audio adapter. Check that any adapter supports microphone input if you need chat.
Analog compatibility is a useful strength, but the connected device’s audio hardware can affect volume and sound. If the headset is silent or intermittent, Razer’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking the plug and port, source volume, selected playback device, drivers, and any hub or adapter in the chain.

- Wireless and Bluetooth: It is wired only, so there is no wireless pairing or battery—but also no freedom to move away from the connected device.
- Detachable microphone: The fixed mic cannot be removed for travel, music listening, or single-player use.
- Advanced controls: You get volume and mic mute rather than wireless profile switching, chat mixing, or extensive onboard adjustment.
- Active noise cancellation: The closed cups provide passive isolation only.
- Premium construction: The affordable design uses plastic and prioritizes low weight and cost over metal finishes. Some versions’ bright green cable may also clash with a setup.
- Universal fit or sound: Gaming-oriented tuning and ear-cup fit are matters of preference; a bass-forward presentation may not be ideal for neutral music listening, larger ears, or every glasses wearer.

These prices are deal signals reported by the cited coverage, not guaranteed current offers. Compare the exact model, connector, and final price rather than relying on the BlackShark or Kraken family name alone.
Who should buy it—and who should skip it
It makes sense for
- PC or console players who want a built-in chat mic and a wired headset around $40.
- People who prefer a simple plug-in connection and do not want to charge or pair a headset.
- Households that need one compatible headset for multiple devices, provided the right jack or adapter is available.
Look elsewhere if
- You need wireless, Bluetooth, or Xbox wireless functionality.
- You want a detachable mic, active noise cancellation, premium construction, or extensive EQ customization.
- You lack a compatible 3.5mm port and do not want to use an adapter.
- Your priority is neutral music listening rather than gaming-oriented sound.
Before you place an order
- Match the exact model: Confirm the listing says BlackShark V2 X and shows a 3.5mm connection, not USB, Xbox-licensed, Pro, or HyperSpeed.
- Check the seller and final price: Treat $39.99 as a retailer-specific, color-specific sale signal. Verify the seller, fulfillment, return policy, inventory, and checkout total.
- Check your device’s jack: Confirm whether it has a combined headset port or separate mic and headphone ports, and whether a phone or tablet needs an adapter.
- Test the basics on arrival: Fully insert the plug, check source volume and mute, choose the correct output and input devices, and test chat before a game session.
If sound cuts out, reconnect the plug firmly, try another compatible device, and remove unnecessary hubs or adapters while troubleshooting. For Windows, confirm the right playback device is selected and use the sound troubleshooter or Sound Control Panel if needed. If it works on a controller but not a desktop, check the PC’s separate mic/headphone ports and splitter before assuming the headset is faulty.
