But the “iconic 20-year-old meme” suggested by the original title remains unidentified: available reporting does not establish which older meme it means or connect one to the newer format.
What is the “Thoughts on Lanterns” meme?
It is an image macro built around a promotional image of John Stewart and Hal Jordan walking down a street. The first version asked for opinions on the show; a parody then reused the image with clothes drawn onto the characters. Later posts adapted the format by changing the image and replacing the show reference with another franchise. Know Your Meme’s explainer describes it as an exploitable template rather than a reference to a documented older meme.
How the meme spread, according to Know Your Meme
Know Your Meme reports that X user @fmjiggy posted “Thoughts on Lanterns 2026?” on September 4, 2026. It says the original post had about 35 likes after six days. On September 8, X user @jadeladeljadel posted the edited version, which the entry says received more than 53,000 likes and 3,700 reposts in two days. These are time-bound figures reported by the secondary source, not independently audited engagement counts.
The entry places adaptations featuring Cuphead, SpongeBob and Patrick, and characters from Breaking Bad on September 8–9. The shift from a question about the series to franchise-specific edits is what made the format reusable: the walking image stayed recognizable while the caption or characters changed.

Does it connect to a 20-year-old DC meme?
That connection is not established. The current meme entry documents a 2026 trend, but it does not identify the older meme implied by “DC’s iconic 20-year-old meme,” explain its age, or show how it relates to the new image edit. The two should not be treated as the same meme without evidence.
A separate piece of background can be easy to confuse with that claim. In a March 2026 report, ComicBook.com covered showrunner Damon Lindelof discussing a joke about dropping “Green” from the title. The report quotes Lindelof calling it “a dumb joke on a comedy podcast” and recounts his memory of wearing a Hal Jordan T-shirt at his first Comic-Con panel for the Lost pilot in 2004. That is a reported anecdote about Lindelof and the title, not evidence identifying the older meme. A separate ComicBook.com explainer reproduces the joke and Grant Morrison’s response; it likewise does not identify the “20-year-old meme.”
