Three-point lighting uses a key to light your face, fill to control the key’s shadows, and a backlight to help separate you from the background. For a streaming desk, start with one soft key about 45 degrees to one side of the camera, add a weaker fill only if the shadow side is too dark, then place a controlled backlight behind you. You do not need three powered lights: a reflector or a nearby wall can provide fill.

What each light does

Key: the main light on your face

The key is the primary source shaping your face. Place it in front of you but off the camera axis; Adobe’s practical video guide suggests roughly 45 degrees as a starting point, not a fixed rule. A larger, diffused source can make shadows softer than a small, hard source. Adjust its position and brightness while watching your camera preview until facial detail is clear.

Fill: control the shadows

Fill softens the shadows made by the key. It can be a second lamp, a reflector opposite the key, or light bounced off a nearby wall. Use only as much as you need: more fill reveals detail in the shadow side, while less preserves contrast and a more directional look. There is no source-backed universal key-to-fill ratio for streaming setups.

Backlight: separate yourself from the background

A backlight sits behind you and is aimed toward your head or shoulders, creating a subtle edge that helps distinguish you from the background. Keep the fixture out of frame and control its angle so light does not spill into the lens, cause flare, or make the edge distractingly bright. It supplements the key; it does not replace it.

Set up the lights in order

  1. Begin with the key. If room lights create unwanted mixed colors or extra shadows, switch them off. Put the key in front of you and to one side, then set its position and brightness so your face is clearly exposed. Adobe’s guide illustrates a key through a scrim at about 45 degrees.
  2. Check the shadow side before adding fill. If it is too dark to show the detail you want, bounce light from a wall or use a reflector opposite the key. A second powered light is optional. Keep the fill’s visual effect below the key if you want to retain directional shadows.
  3. Add the backlight. Position it behind you and aim it toward your head or shoulders, away from the camera lens. Reduce its brightness or change its angle if it creates flare or an overly bright outline.
  4. Match color and set white balance. Where possible, use lights and room illumination with similar color. Elgato describes 4000–5000 K as a practical neutral-office starting range and about 5600 K as a daylight-style reference; neither is a universal setting for every room, camera, wall, or background. Set your camera’s white balance to suit the actual scene.
  5. Review the camera image at your streaming exposure. Move a light closer or farther away, adjust its height or angle, and change brightness before deciding that you need a higher-output fixture. Light reaching your face changes with placement and distance.

Fix common lighting problems

What you see What to try
The shadow side of your face loses too much detail. Add or increase fill with a reflector, wall bounce, or second light.
Your face looks flat and shadows have disappeared. Reduce the fill’s effect or move it farther away to restore contrast.
The backlight flares into the camera or draws attention. Reposition or dim it, and aim it away from the lens while keeping it out of frame.
Your face and background appear to have mismatched color. Reduce competing room light where practical, match light color more closely, and reset camera white balance for the scene.
The light seems too dim despite a high advertised output. Check the actual working distance, source size, diffusion, and angle. Move the light closer or adjust its position before shopping for more output.

Choose equipment around your desk and subject

You can start with lights you already own. A reflector or wall bounce can handle fill, so buying three fixtures is not a requirement. If you shop for a light, compare how much usable brightness it provides at your actual working distance, how much of you it covers, whether its source can be softened, its color-temperature range, its mount and reach, and whether its controls fit your workflow. CRI can help compare color rendering, but it should not be the only selection factor.

Elgato’s current product guide, updated July 30, 2026, positions Key Light Neo for close, compact or webcam setups; Key Light Air MK.2 for typical creator desks; and Key Light for setups needing more output, distance, or coverage. These are the manufacturer’s examples, not independent tests or universal recommendations. The same guide reports maximum outputs of up to 1,000 lumens for Key Light Neo, 2,100 lumens for Key Light Air MK.2, and 2,800 lumens for Key Light; actual results at your face depend on placement and distance. Elgato’s July 30, 2026 guide reports 2900–7000 K adjustment across those models. Treat these specifications and examples as manufacturer information, not proof that one light will suit every room.

Or let it run in the cloud

Lighting improves the camera image; it does not keep a live broadcast running after a home computer or connection stops. If your separate goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not camera-based live video. Start your free first day.
