The three Xbox consoles in the headline are refreshed configurations of the Xbox Series X|S, not a new generation. Microsoft announced them on June 9, 2024; the main launch date was October 15, 2024, in the United States and most supported markets, with some countries following on October 29. All three have since launched.
The models were the 1TB Xbox Series S in Robot White, the 1TB all-digital Xbox Series X in Robot White, and the 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition with a disc drive. Their changes were storage, finish and disc-drive options—not faster hardware. Microsoft’s announcement listed U.S. launch prices of $349.99, $449.99 and $599.99, respectively; those are 2024 launch prices, not verified 2026 retail prices.

These capacities are advertised SSD sizes; system software and reserved space mean less is available for game installations. The listed prices are U.S. launch prices from Microsoft’s June 2024 announcement, not current market quotes. Microsoft said availability and assortment varied by market.
What each Xbox configuration offers
Xbox Series S 1TB in Robot White
This all-digital Series S doubled the original 512GB Series S configuration’s advertised capacity while keeping the Series S performance tier and compact form factor. It was the lowest-priced of the three at launch and suits players who buy digitally or use Game Pass and do not need a disc drive. The extra storage does not make it as powerful as a Series X.

Xbox Series X 1TB Digital Edition in Robot White
This model pairs Series X performance with a 1TB SSD and no optical drive. Microsoft described it as supporting up to 4K resolution, with the same core performance as the other Series X configuration. At its $449.99 U.S. launch price, it offered a lower-priced route to the Series X tier for digital-first players, but it cannot play physical game discs or Blu-ray discs.
Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition
The premium configuration combines Series X performance, a 2TB SSD and an optical disc drive. Its Galaxy Black finish and bundled matching controller distinguish the package; Microsoft described it as available in limited quantities in select markets, without specifying a production total. Its higher launch price buys more storage, disc support and special-edition styling—not a faster Series X.

When did the consoles get their release dates?
- June 9, 2024: Microsoft announced the three options and initially gave a “holiday 2024” window. Xbox Wire announcement
- August 21, 2024: Preorders opened and Microsoft’s specific October launch date was reported. Release-date report Preorder report
- October 15, 2024: The consoles launched in the United States and most supported markets.

Were these new-generation Xbox consoles?
No. They were additions to the existing Series X|S lineup, and Microsoft said they retained the same speed and performance as the existing systems. The refresh changed storage capacity, exterior design and whether a disc drive was included. It did not introduce a new console generation or make the Series S equivalent to a Series X.

What to check before choosing one
Physical games and discs
Both Robot White models are digital-only. A disc-free console cannot use a physical game disc in place of a digital license, so anyone moving from a disc-equipped Xbox should check their collection before switching. The Galaxy Black model is the only one of these three with a disc drive.

Storage needs
More internal SSD capacity can mean fewer games need to be removed to make room for new installations, but the advertised 1TB or 2TB is not all available to games. Expansion storage is another option, though adding hardware has a cost. See Xbox storage accessories for the official category.
Availability and price
The 2024 launch prices are useful for understanding how Microsoft positioned the models at launch, but they do not establish what any console costs or whether it is in stock in 2026. Compare current listings in your region, including standard or refurbished Series X models, rather than assuming the Galaxy Black premium or digital-edition discount still applies.

Which model fits which buyer?
- Choose the Series S 1TB if lower launch positioning, compact size and digital play matter more than Series X-level performance, and you do not need discs.
- Choose the Series X 1TB Digital Edition if you want Series X performance and are committed to buying games digitally. It is not a fit for a physical Xbox game or Blu-ray collection.
- Choose the Series X 2TB Galaxy Black if you want Series X performance, a disc drive and more internal storage, and the bundled controller and special finish matter to you. The extra storage and design do not improve performance.
- Compare other Series X options if a standard or refurbished disc-equipped Series X is available at a better current price, or if you do not need the 2TB model’s additional storage.
