If Thymesia crashes when you launch it on PC, start by checking your Windows and graphics-driver updates, verifying the game files in Steam, and comparing your PC with the game’s listed requirements. These are general launch checks, not a guaranteed fix: the available guidance does not establish one solution that works for every startup crash. Work through the steps below one at a time and note exactly where the game fails.
First, identify when Thymesia crashes
The point of failure helps narrow the problem without assuming a cause. Note whether the game never opens a window, closes at the splash screen, shows an error, or starts and then exits during loading or gameplay.
Before changing settings, record the exact error text, if any, plus your Windows version, CPU, RAM, GPU and graphics-driver version. Also note whether you launch through Steam and whether other games are failing. This information is useful if you need to contact support.
Check that your PC meets Thymesia’s listed requirements
Steam lists Windows 10 64-bit, DirectX 12, and 16 GB of available storage for both the minimum and recommended configurations. Its minimum specifications are a Core i5 or Ryzen 5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, and a GTX 950 or Radeon HD 7970. Recommended specifications are a Core i7 or Ryzen 7, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 1060 or RX 580. See the Thymesia technical support listing on Steam and the Steam Store page.

Try the basic Steam and Windows launch checks
Steam’s general launch advice recommends updates, file verification, and checking for interference from other software. It notes that causes can vary between PC setups, so make one change at a time and try launching after each one. See Steam’s guide to games that fail after “Preparing to Launch”.

- Restart Windows and install pending updates. After the restart, test Thymesia before making another change.
- Update your graphics driver. Get the driver through the graphics-card manufacturer’s official channel, then restart if the installer requests it and test the game.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Steam Library, right-click Thymesia, open Properties, select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to finish and try launching again.
- Temporarily close non-essential overlays and background apps. Close them for a test launch, then reopen them afterward. If the game starts, re-enable items one at a time to identify whether one is involved.
If it still will not launch, isolate recent changes
Think about what changed shortly before the crashes began: a graphics-driver or Windows update, new hardware, or a changed configuration. Test relevant changes individually where practical instead of stacking several fixes together; otherwise, it is harder to tell what helped.
Use a clean boot as a diagnostic test
A clean boot can help determine whether a startup program or service is interfering with the game. Team17 suggested clean-boot testing in a 2022 Steam Community discussion, but that thread concerned unresponsive controls and did not confirm a fix for startup crashes. If you try it, follow Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions and restore your normal startup configuration after the test. The Team17 discussion is available in the Steam Community.

Try Windows display scaling only when it fits the symptoms
The same historical discussion suggested setting Windows display scaling to 100% and changing high-DPI compatibility settings for PlagueProject.exe. The player mentioned using 200% scaling but did not report testing the suggested change. It is therefore an unconfirmed, targeted test—not an established startup-crash fix. Consider it only if the failure appears tied to the launch window or display behavior, and note the original setting so you can restore it.
Contact Team17 if the checks do not resolve the crash
If Thymesia still fails to start, use the Customer Support Website or the support email shown on Steam’s Thymesia technical support listing. Include the exact error text, where the crash occurs, your PC specifications and Windows version, the storefront you use, and the checks you have already tried. That gives support a clearer account of the problem than “the game crashes on startup.”
