TikTok Live Studio was a Windows desktop app that let a limited group of creators broadcast gameplay and other screen content to TikTok LIVE. The test, reported on December 20, 2021, was a restricted rollout—not a public launch or a cloud-gaming service. “Game streaming” here meant broadcasting games running on a creator’s own device.
What TikTok Live Studio did
Live Studio was designed to bring a computer-based broadcast setup to TikTok: capture a game or screen, arrange video sources, and interact with viewers in one desktop application. Its basic idea was similar to OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop, but aimed at sending the live feed to TikTok LIVE.
The December 2021 report described support for PC game capture, mobile-device capture, cameras, selected programs, text, and images. The app also included a viewer-chat interface and supported both portrait and landscape scenes. These details describe the early test build, not a confirmed specification for later versions. Who could test it?
Not every TikTok user could download or use the test. The report described access for only “a few thousand users” in selected Western countries and did not supply a complete country list. It also did not establish a global release date.
Three permissions should not be treated as interchangeable: eligibility to use TikTok LIVE, access to Live Studio, and authorization to stream through a third-party desktop app or stream key. Later Streamlabs guidance makes that distinction explicit: access to Live Studio does not automatically grant native TikTok access through Streamlabs Desktop. See Streamlabs’ integration guidance.

What was missing from the early test?
The first reported build looked more basic than established production software. Android Headlines reported that it lacked browser sources and in-stream alerts, and noted limited emoji support. The report did not establish a mature plugin or extension ecosystem, nor feature parity with OBS or Streamlabs.
- No browser sources: program capture was listed, but that does not mean a browser page could be added as a dedicated source.
- No in-stream alerts: the early report did not describe built-in alert overlays.
- Unclear customization: the test’s extensibility and support for specialized capture workflows were not established.
These are observations about the early test, not claims that later software necessarily retained the same limitations.

Why portrait and landscape both mattered
PC gaming broadcasts commonly use a horizontal 16:9 layout, while TikTok is strongly associated with vertical viewing on phones. Supporting both scene orientations suggested that TikTok was trying to accommodate conventional gameplay while keeping a format suitable for mobile-first audiences.
Orientation support alone does not establish automatic conversion. The 2021 report did not say that Live Studio transformed a horizontal stream into a well-composed vertical layout; creators would still need to arrange gameplay and camera sources for the chosen frame.

How the test concept compared with OBS and Streamlabs
This is a comparison of the reported test concept and current Streamlabs product information, not a hands-on benchmark. The 2021 Live Studio feature descriptions should not be read as a current feature list.

Why TikTok was interested in PC gameplay
A desktop broadcasting tool could make TikTok more practical for creators whose streams depend on PC games, cameras, scenes, and viewer chat. Longer gaming broadcasts could also keep viewers on TikTok beyond short clips, while giving creators already familiar with Twitch or YouTube Gaming another potential destination.

That makes the test a signal of competitive ambition, not proof that TikTok had declared a formal contest with Twitch, YouTube Gaming, or Facebook Gaming. A native tool could reduce setup friction for TikTok-only creators, but the early omissions and restricted access made it an experiment rather than an immediate replacement for mature broadcast software.
What creators should know about desktop access now
The 2021 test does not answer whether a particular account can use a desktop workflow today. Current third-party tooling has its own permission requirements: Streamlabs says native TikTok access must be applied for separately, and its product page describes content-related conditions for some third-party access. It states that, effective July 7, 2025, creators using its TikTok integration could lose access if less than 50% of their streaming content was gaming-related. Check the current Streamlabs TikTok requirements before building a workflow around that integration.
Streamlabs also says TikTok does not provide every creator with a stream key; its stream-key guidance describes access as dependent on TikTok approval and account factors. In January 2026, Streamlabs reported investigating access suspensions affecting third-party PC streaming solutions, including its own. That account is a reminder that permissions can change; it is not evidence that every creator or tool was affected. See its access-revocation notice.
The OBS-related licensing allegation
Contemporary coverage also reported allegations that Live Studio used OBS-related code without complying with relevant open-source licensing obligations. The available record here establishes that the allegation was reported, not that a court or regulator proved a violation or resolved its legal status.
