tmonitorapi.dll is most strongly associated with the legacy Sony PC Companion phone-management application, not with Windows itself. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that complete Sony application instead of downloading the DLL separately.
What this file actually does
tmonitorapi.dll appears in public installation records for Sony and Sony Ericsson PC Companion, including older installations under a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)SonySony PC Companion
Its exact internal function is not publicly documented. It is best treated as a private application component that belongs beside the Sony executable that needs it.
The file is not known to be a Windows component, Microsoft runtime, graphics library, or standard driver. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. Doing so can create version conflicts and may make it easier for an unrelated program to load the wrong library.

Some public file records describe the DLL as a small 32-bit application file, but the available version information is inconsistent. Do not use a reported file size or version as a substitute for matching the complete Sony installation.
Causes and symptoms
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when PC Companion starts | The legacy Sony installation is incomplete or damaged | Repair or reinstall PC Companion from original media or a known-good backup |
| The error appears after connecting an Xperia phone | A Sony phone-management component is missing or damaged | Reinstall the application that handles the connection |
| The message appears at Windows sign-in | A stale startup entry or shortcut still launches removed software | Identify and disable or remove the obsolete startup item |
| Windows Security shows a detection | The DLL may have been quarantined or deleted | Check Protection history, then prefer reinstalling the application |
| The dialog names another missing DLL too | A dependency is missing, not necessarily tmonitorapi.dll itself |
Record every filename and repair the application as a complete unit |
| The error comes from an unfamiliar executable | Another program may be requesting the filename | Investigate that executable before restoring any file |
| Reinstalling does not help | The wrong application was repaired, or a dependency, profile, or compatibility problem remains | Identify the exact caller and continue with the escalation steps below |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the DLL
Before changing files, find out whether the message comes from PC Companion, a current Xperia utility, or an unrelated program.
- Read the title bar of the error dialog. It may identify the application.
- Note when the message appears:
- while signing in to Windows;
- when opening a shortcut;
- when launching PC Companion;
- after connecting a phone; or
- during another program’s startup.
- Right-click the shortcut that triggers the error and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- Look for a Sony or Sony Ericsson directory, especially one under
Program Files (x86). - If the dialog appears during startup, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select Startup apps, and inspect entries related to PC Companion or Sony. - For a more detailed startup inventory, use Microsoft’s System Configuration and Task Manager tools to locate the entry. Do not delete an unfamiliar startup item until you know which program owns it.
If the requesting executable is not part of Sony phone software, stop and investigate that executable first. A filename association alone is not enough evidence to restore a DLL.
Fix 2: Repair the installed Sony application
Repair is the least disruptive application-level fix when the program is still installed.

Try Windows application repair
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Sony PC Companion, Xperia Companion, or the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the Sony application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and restart Windows.
If Windows does not offer an Advanced options or Repair button, use the traditional repair command:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Sony application.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts and restart the computer.
A successful repair should allow the same shortcut to start without the missing-DLL dialog. If the repair completes but the error is unchanged, continue with a full reinstall rather than copying a loose file.
Fix 3: Reinstall the correct Sony program
For supported Sony phone-management software, download the current Xperia Companion package from Sony’s official support site. Install it over the existing installation if the installer permits this.
Sony has stated that older Xperia Companion versions are no longer supported and should be replaced with the latest supported package. This modern package may not contain the exact legacy files used by PC Companion.
If the error specifically identifies old Sony PC Companion, current Xperia Companion may not restore tmonitorapi.dll. In that case, use the original PC Companion installer or a known-good backup only if the old application is genuinely required. Do not combine DLLs from different releases.
If repair is unavailable, remove the damaged installation first:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the Sony application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Sony package from trusted original media or Sony’s current official support channel.
You can also open appwiz.cpl, select the application, and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
The reinstall worked when the application starts normally, the phone is detected as expected, and no new missing-DLL message appears. If the same message returns immediately, verify that the shortcut points to the newly installed application rather than an obsolete directory.

Antivirus software may have quarantined or deleted the file after identifying a suspicious change in the application directory.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the DLL disappeared.
- Expand a relevant entry and record the detected path, filename, and action.
If the event identifies a genuine Sony installation and the installer came from a trusted source, reinstalling the complete application is safer than restoring only the DLL. If you consider restoring the item, first verify the exact path, the application that owns it, and the source of the installation. Run a security scan afterward.
Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a DLL from an unverified download page. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined threat can cause it to be detected again.
Fix 5: Check whether the installation is the right architecture
Historical records place this DLL in Program Files (x86) and describe it as a 32-bit application file. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit Sony program, so 64-bit Windows alone is not the problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the application directory and installer:
- Open File Explorer.
- Inspect
C:Program Files (x86)andC:Program Files. - Find the directory belonging to the Sony application.
- Right-click its main executable and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab if available.
- Compare the executable and installer source with the application you intended to install.
Do not substitute a 64-bit DLL for a 32-bit one. Do not mix files from PC Companion and Xperia Companion or from unrelated releases. If the old installer is incompatible with the Windows version, use the current supported Sony application where possible. If the old program is essential, test it in a controlled environment or preserve a complete known-good installation rather than rebuilding it with random files.

Fix 6: Remove a stale startup entry or shortcut
If PC Companion was uninstalled but the error appears during sign-in, Windows may still be trying to launch an obsolete command.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Startup apps.
- Look for PC Companion, Sony, or an entry whose publisher and file location match the old installation.
- Select the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Also inspect:
- the Desktop;
- the Start menu;
- the Startup folder opened with
shell:startup; - the Startup folder opened with
shell:common startup.
Remove only shortcuts that clearly point to the deleted Sony installation. If the error stops after disabling the entry, the missing DLL was evidence of a stale launch command rather than a Windows-wide failure.

tmonitorapi.dll is an application DLL, so Windows repair commands will not normally retrieve it. Use them when you also have corrupted system files, repeated Windows component errors, failed updates, or several unrelated programs failing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the Sony application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. A successful result means Windows repaired or verified system components. It does not prove that the Sony DLL has been restored. If both commands complete without resolving the application error, return to the Sony installation and its dependencies.
Repeatedly hunting through Windows files and rerunning SFC or DISM can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the broader problems manually checking these components may miss; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the Sony application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing file.
Fix 8: Update drivers only for connection-specific failures
A driver is not the same thing as tmonitorapi.dll, and there is no verified basis for treating this file as a Windows device driver. However, if the error appears only when connecting a phone and Device Manager shows a separate device warning, address that warning independently.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and any category containing the phone.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and reconnect the phone.
If a Sony installer provides a device component, use that installer instead of forcing a generic driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of checking which drivers are stale; its free scan identifies candidates, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Updating a driver will not replace an application-owned tmonitorapi.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable public evidence that tmonitorapi.dll is a self-registering COM library.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 tmonitorapi.dll
It may produce another error and does not restore a missing file or its dependencies. Use the Sony application installer instead.
Avoid random DLL downloads
Do not download tmonitorapi.dll from a DLL-index or file-sharing site. A loose copy can contain malware, belong to a different application release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another dependency is missing. It can also conceal a damaged installation that needs a complete repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safe sources are the official Sony Xperia Companion support channel, the original PC Companion installer, or a known-good backup of the exact application. If you manually recover a file in a controlled situation, it must match the original installation and remain beside the requesting executable. Never place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
If the error still appears
Use these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact executable named by the dialog.
- Check whether the error occurs for every Windows account or only one.
- Test a clean Windows profile if only one account is affected.
- Inspect permissions and per-user startup entries.
- Check Event Viewer for the application name and failing module.
- Confirm that the shortcut does not point to an old Sony directory.
- Scan the executable and its containing folder if the caller is unfamiliar.
- If the file disappeared with other application files, investigate antivirus activity, disk problems, malware, and backups.
- Consider System Restore only when a suitable restore point predates the failure. It can roll back system settings, files, and installed programs, but not personal files.
If the error names a different DLL after reinstalling, treat that as a separate dependency problem. If it persists with an unfamiliar executable, do not restore the file until that executable has been identified.
FAQ
Is tmonitorapi.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Available installation records associate it with Sony PC Companion.
Can I copy it into System32?
No. It is an application-private file and should remain with the program that installed it.
Is current Xperia Companion the same as PC Companion?
No. Xperia Companion is the current Sony application, while PC Companion is legacy software. The current package may not restore every file required by an old PC Companion installation.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not automatically. The missing filename alone does not establish that one of those runtimes is required. First repair the Sony application and read the complete error message.
Why does the message say “specified module could not be found”?
That wording can mean either that tmonitorapi.dll is absent or that a dependency required by it is absent. Identify the calling executable and all filenames in the error before choosing a fix.
Can I ignore the message if I no longer use PC Companion?
If the message comes only from an obsolete startup entry or shortcut, disable or remove that launch command. If the program is no longer needed, uninstall it completely rather than restoring the DLL.
