The NYT Connections puzzle dated Monday, June 3, 2024, is puzzle #358. Its four groups are built around winding terms, hair-removal methods, different kinds of cells, and words that become phrases when prefixed with “B-.” The complete solution and a spoiler-light hint ladder are below.

Hints for Monday, June 3

  1. Yellow: Think of ways to coil, wind, spool or wrap something.
  2. Green: These are methods used to remove hair, including for eyebrow grooming.
  3. Blue: “Cell” applies in biological, geometric, electrical and spreadsheet contexts.
  4. Purple: Add the letter B and a hyphen to the front of each word to make familiar terms.

Today’s Connections answers

Color Category Words
Yellow Winding or coiling terms COIL, SPOOL, WIND, WRAP
Green Hair-removal methods LASER, PLUCK, THREAD, WAX
Blue Things with cells HONEYCOMB, ORGANISM, SOLAR PANEL, SPREADSHEET
Purple Words preceded by B- BALL, MOVIE, SCHOOL, VITAMIN

Why this board is tricky

The B- group is a vocabulary trap

B-ball is basketball, B-movie is a low-budget or otherwise formulaic film, B-school is an abbreviation for business school, and a B-vitamin is one of the vitamins in the B-vitamin group. “B-school” is the least immediately familiar entry, so it can make the final category difficult to see.

Words with competing associations

THREAD belongs with hair removal because threading is a technique commonly used for eyebrows and other facial hair. WIND is the verb meaning to coil or turn repeatedly, not the noun for moving air.

The board also invites false links: BALL can look related to yarn and winding, WIND can seem connected to a SOLAR PANEL through weather or energy, and the unusual B-school phrase may remain hidden until the other groups are cleared.
