How the wordplay works
The final group combines a letter added to the beginning of a foot part: O + TOE makes OTOE, P + ARCH makes PARCH, R + ANKLE makes RANKLE, and W + HEEL makes WHEEL. The added letters turn familiar foot-related words into the four tiles.
Why some archives may show a different puzzle number
TechRadar’s January 12 preview, Parade’s January 13 guide, and a contemporaneous player discussion identify this date’s puzzle as #947. One answer archive instead labels January 13 as #990 and lists different answers. For this date, #947 is the better-supported identification across the dated coverage and discussion. The NYT Games page itself was not directly accessible to the source browser, so the answer is supported here by those secondary reports rather than an inspected official answer record.
