What it is

Captail is a free Windows instant replay utility that keeps recent gameplay in a rolling buffer and watches its capture pipeline for stalls. If modules stop or frames go missing, a watchdog attempts a controlled restart with retries and backoff. Desktop mode records a selected monitor and can use Game Capture when available; Game Capture mode does not record the desktop. Depending on detected hardware encoders, it supports AV1, HEVC, and H.264 through NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync. Audio can be mixed or separated into tracks by application, with independent microphone routing. Replay duration ranges from 15 seconds to 15 minutes, with an optional RAM limit and requested capture rates from 30 to 240 FPS. The replay player offers seeking and playback-speed controls, and its multi-track editor can trim and merge audio tracks. Captures, settings, thumbnails, and logs stay on the PC. Captail has no account, ads, analytics, telemetry, or automatic uploads. It supports Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11 on x64.

Good, and not so good

  • Rolling buffer with configurable replay duration
  • Supports AV1, HEVC, and H.264 when hardware allows
  • Audio tracks can be split by application
  • Captures and logs stay on the PC
  • Some games or anti-cheat setups may block Game Capture
  • DRM-protected regions may appear black
  • Recovery cannot recreate frames the source never delivered
  • GitHub release binaries are not Authenticode-signed

Who it suits

Captail suits Windows players looking for instant replay without a full streaming suite. It does not include scenes, streaming, transitions, or plugin management.

Captail focuses on replay capture, audio routing, and local file storage rather than streaming production tools. Its capture options depend on hardware support, and some games or anti-cheat setups may block Game Capture.
