What it is
OpenJar Launcher is a free, Mac-first Minecraft launcher and modding toolkit for managing instances, modpacks, mods, configs, and launches. Each setup stays in its own on-disk folder, keeping its mods, configs, worlds, launch settings, and metadata separate. Users can browse and install content from Modrinth, CurseForge, and GitHub, and import Modrinth .mrpack and CurseForge modpack ZIP archives, as well as Vanilla Minecraft and Prism Launcher instances. Lockfile tracking supports version pinning, compatible update checks, and rollback snapshots before Update All. Creator Studio builds layered modpacks and previews planned changes before applying them. Run reports and Fix My Instance surface likely causes, recent changes, and reversible recovery actions. Friend Link is designed for small groups, but its first version has no hosted cloud relay or world-save replication. Instances, worlds, configs, and saves are not uploaded by default; network use is for provider, authentication, update, and sync flows the user chooses. Production builds store refresh tokens in OS secure storage. Build targets cover macOS Intel and Apple Silicon, Linux x64, Windows x64, and Windows ARM64, with the most manual testing on macOS. The source-available license allows personal and non-commercial use; commercial use requires written permission.
Good, and not so good
- Keeps each Minecraft setup in its own folder
- Imports Modrinth, CurseForge, Vanilla, and Prism setups
- Rollback snapshots before Update All
- Data is not uploaded by default
- Build targets include macOS, Linux, and Windows
- Friend Link has no hosted cloud relay
- Friend Link has no world-save replication in v1
- Commercial use requires written permission
- Most manual testing is on macOS
Who it suits
It suits Minecraft players who want separate instances, modpack imports, update tracking, and recovery tools. Small groups considering Friend Link should note its relay and world-save replication limits.
OpenJar brings instance organization, modpack management, and troubleshooting tools into a local-first Minecraft launcher. Its license limits use to personal and non-commercial purposes unless written permission is obtained.
