VGSources / Best Game Asset Extractors / UABEA
What it is
UABEA works on Windows and Linux with Unity Asset Bundles, Serialized Files and Addressables bundles, allowing them to be read and written. Its feature set covers texture, font, audio, TextAsset and MonoBehaviour work, plus batch extraction and archive repacking. It is aimed at modding and research, not general asset extraction. Meshes, audio import, newer Unity versions and some texture workflows have important limits.
Good, and not so good
- Free and open source under the MIT license
- Runs on Windows and Linux
- Reads and writes Unity bundles and serialized files
- Provides batch extraction and archive repacking
- Practical texture editing workflows are documented
- Mesh import can require a matching Unity project and resS handling
- Audio import and VideoClip editing are unavailable or unresolved
- Newer Unity versions can have deserialization problems
- Addressables edits need CRC cleaning
- Font atlases are unsupported
Who it suits
Unity texture and serialized-file modding Researchers inspecting Unity Asset Bundles Users wanting an open-source Windows or Linux tool
Windows and Linux builds, batch operations and an MIT license make it easy to fit into a personal workflow. The decision changes when the task depends on mesh pipelines, audio encoding, video assets or the newest Unity releases. Those areas have documented gaps and extra file handling. Treat UABEA as an editor for targeted changes, not a universal extractor or asset-conversion suite.

Questions
- What files does UABEA open?
- For modding and research, it works with Unity Asset Bundles, Unity Serialized Files and Addressables bundles.
- Which operating systems are supported?
- Windows and Linux have nightly builds. Windows needs the Visual C++ Redistributable, while Linux needs glibc 2.29 or newer.
- What runtime does the latest release need?
- The latest listed release requires .NET Runtime 6.0. Linux users on musl-based distributions must compile UABEA themselves.
- Can UABEA edit textures?
- Yes. Texture work supports TGA and formats handled by the Texture2D plugin. Swizzled Switch textures can be edited, but newly added ones are not automatically swizzled.
- Does it import meshes?
- Mesh import can require a Unity project using the same engine version, mesh dumps and possible resS data. UABEA cannot open resS files directly.
- Is UABEANext stable?
- UABEANext is a newer rewrite with docking and multi-bundle opening, though the project says it remains a work in progress.
- Is UABEA suitable for extraction only?
- The maintainer presents it as a modding and research tool and recommends dedicated extractors such as AssetRipper or AssetStudio when extraction is the sole goal.
- What license does UABEA use?
- The repository identifies UABEA as MIT licensed, with its source and .NET solution publicly available.
