WorldPainter

What it is

WorldPainter is a free, open-source map generator for Minecraft Java Edition. It lets users sculpt terrain and paint materials and landscape features such as trees, snow and ice, then export a generated world directly to the Minecraft saves directory. The tool is primarily for creating maps; editing an existing map is limited to Import and Merge operations. It supports custom mod blocks, using fully qualified names for Minecraft 1.15 and later and numeric IDs for versions 1.12 and earlier. Custom object layers can load BO2, BO3, schematic or NBT objects. WorldPainter does not create Minecraft structures itself, but can direct Minecraft to generate structures during world population. The application runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and requires Java 17 or later. It cannot customize biomes while leaving Minecraft to generate all land according to those biomes. The download page provides SHA256 checksums for installer files. The maker points users to its official subreddit for support and links to controls, FAQ, plugin, scripting and other documentation, while noting that a proper user manual is not yet available.

Who it suits

It suits Minecraft Java Edition players who want to create and export custom terrain maps. Users mainly editing existing maps should note the limited Import and Merge support.

WorldPainter provides detailed terrain and material painting for creating Minecraft Java worlds across Windows, macOS and Linux. It is less suited to extensive edits of existing maps or biome customization paired with Minecraft-generated terrain.
