In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), error 0x887A0005 means Windows reports that the DirectX graphics device was removed or reset. It does not by itself mean your GPU is dead, and there is no single fix that works for every cause. Try these five steps in order: address the graphics driver, repair the game files, rebuild shaders, disable software that hooks into the game, then test with system tuning and graphics load at safer settings.
This guide is for the Windows PC versions on Steam and Battle.net—not the 2009 Modern Warfare 2 or Campaign Remastered.
What does 0x887A0005 mean?
Microsoft identifies 0x887A0005 as DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED: the graphics device used by DirectX has been removed or suspended. In a gaming crash, that can follow a driver reset, a GPU hang, hardware instability, or an interaction between the game and driver. Windows’ Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) mechanism can reset the graphics stack when a GPU takes too long to complete work. The code is a failure signal, not a diagnosis of one specific cause.
A related code, 0x887A0006, is DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG, which indicates that the GPU stopped responding to commands. The Call of Duty identifier 6068 may appear alongside a DirectX failure, but it does not identify the underlying cause either. As of August 18, 2026, Activision’s known-issues page lists ongoing PC performance problems but does not identify 0x887A0005 as a universal, one-step bug. Its PC troubleshooting guidance instead covers supported Windows versions, drivers, shader preloading, file repair, and background-app conflicts.
Before you start
Make a short note of what happens before the crash. These details help you compare results after each change:
- Restart Windows, install pending Windows updates, and make sure the monitor is plugged into the dedicated graphics card rather than the motherboard video output.
- Record your GPU model, graphics-driver version, Windows version, launcher, and whether you use overclocking or undervolting.
- Note whether the crash happens at launch, during shader compilation, in Campaign or Multiplayer, on a particular map or visual effect, or only after several minutes.
- Watch for a brief black screen or display flash before the error. That can accompany a driver or GPU reset, although it does not prove the cause.
Activision lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for Modern Warfare II; Windows 7 and Windows 8 are not supported by its PC guidance. Test one change at a time, then repeat the same activity that previously caused the crash. That makes it easier to tell whether a fix helped.
1. Clean-install or roll back the graphics driver
A corrupted, partially updated, incompatible, or unstable graphics driver is an early variable to eliminate because the error concerns DirectX’s graphics device. Download drivers only from the GPU maker—Nvidia, AMD, or Intel—and use the version appropriate to your card and Windows installation.

- Close the game, launcher, browser, recording software, and GPU utilities.
- Run the installer. If it offers a clean installation option or an equivalent, select it.
- Restart Windows, then test Modern Warfare II at default graphics settings before restoring custom tuning.
If the crashes began immediately after a driver update, try returning to the previously stable driver instead of assuming the newest release is best. Activision’s MWII troubleshooting page lists Nvidia 526.86, AMD 22.9.1, and Intel 31.0.101.4972; those are versions published in its guidance, not universal recommendations for every GPU in August 2026.
A third-party display-driver cleanup utility is an optional escalation, not an Activision requirement. Use one only if you are comfortable with Safe Mode and understand the risks; avoid unofficial driver-download sites.
2. Repair or verify the game files
A damaged game file or incomplete update can disrupt rendering. Checking the installation is less disruptive than reinstalling the whole game. Activision recommends the relevant launcher’s repair control.

Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish before launching the game.
Battle.net
- Open Battle.net and select Modern Warfare II.
- Select the gear or options icon beside Play.
- Choose Scan and Repair, start the scan, and let the launcher replace any damaged files.
- When it finishes, restart the launcher and test the game.
Steam’s label can vary with client versions. If Battle.net cannot patch or repair the installation, follow Blizzard’s installation and patch troubleshooting rather than deleting folders at random. A successful file check makes damaged files less likely, but it does not rule out a driver reset, shader problem, overlay conflict, overheating, unstable tuning, or game-side bug.

Modern Warfare II compiles shaders during startup and after some game or graphics-driver changes. Activision advises players to let shader preloading complete before playing; interrupting it can contribute to performance problems.
- Start the game and remain at the main menu while shader preloading runs.
- Wait until the progress reaches 100% before launching Campaign or Multiplayer.
- If the game offers a shader-installation or shader-restart control, use it, then restart the game after the process completes.
If crashes started after a driver update or repeated interrupted shader builds, you can also clear Windows’ DirectX shader cache:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System → Storage → Temporary files.
- Select DirectX Shader Cache and remove it.
- Restart Windows, launch the game, and let shader preloading finish.
The exact Storage interface varies across Windows 10 and 11 builds. Clearing this cache is a reset, not a guaranteed cure: shaders must be rebuilt, so the first launch can take longer or stutter temporarily.
4. Disable overlays and background utilities
Software that injects an overlay, captures video, monitors hardware, remaps input, or changes performance settings can conflict with a game. Activision warns that background applications may interfere with gameplay or startup; it specifically names NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, and Razer Cortex as possible conflicts and recommends updating Razer Synapse.

For a test, fully exit these types of software—not just their visible windows—and disable their in-game hooks:
- Discord, Steam, Xbox Game Bar, Nvidia, or AMD overlays
- OBS and other recording or capture tools
- MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server
- NZXT CAM, Razer Cortex, RGB utilities, macro tools, and input remappers
- Third-party FPS limiters and performance tuners

- Press Win + R, enter
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and launch Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup programs there.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
- Restore the original startup configuration after testing; a clean boot is for diagnosis, not a recommended permanent setup.
Do not disable antivirus protection entirely. If you have evidence that it is blocking the game, Activision recommends adding the complete game folder to the antivirus exception list instead.

A GPU or CPU overclock, GPU undervolt, unstable memory profile, or aggressive power or temperature setting can fail under one demanding DirectX workload even when the desktop appears stable. Resetting these settings helps test stability; lowering graphics options is also a temporary diagnostic, not proof that your GPU is too weak.

Test at stock settings
Temporarily disable or reset GPU core and memory overclocks, GPU undervolting, CPU overclocking, custom power limits, and experimental driver features. If instability is suspected, temporarily disable the XMP or EXPO memory profile as well. Change one group of settings at a time, reboot after BIOS changes, and test before adding custom tuning back.
Reduce the rendering workload
For a temporary test, lower texture quality and VRAM-related options, reduce shadows and volumetric effects, disable ray tracing if available, and cap the frame rate below the monitor’s maximum. Avoid uncapped menus; try a lower resolution or render scale if needed. If on-demand texture streaming appears to trigger the crash or unstable network or storage activity, turn it off for the test.
Investigate cooling, power delivery, and system stability if the display repeatedly goes black, artifacts appear, Windows records repeated display-driver resets, or other demanding games crash too. A problem isolated to Modern Warfare II leans more toward a game, driver, or configuration interaction; failures across multiple applications raise concern about system-wide instability, hardware, power, or cooling.
If the crash continues
Check Activision’s MWII known-issues page for current PC problems, then submit an Activision PC crash report and include your DxDiag information. Note the activity that triggers the crash and which steps you tested. If other games also fail, contact the GPU or system manufacturer and share the crash pattern and system details.
Reserve a full reinstall for a repair that fails, a launcher that cannot correct the installation, suspected drive errors, or a failed patch that remains broken after repair and cache rebuilding. Reinstalling cannot fix an unstable driver, overclock, RAM, power supply, cooling problem, or overlay conflict.

Workarounds to avoid as first steps
- TdrDelay registry edits: Increasing Windows’ GPU timeout can mask symptoms and has potential side effects; it does not repair a faulty driver, unstable overclock, or damaged game file. Microsoft documents TDR as a graphics recovery mechanism, not a routine consumer game-fix procedure.
- Forcing DirectX 11: Launch arguments such as
-d3d11are experimental and launcher-specific, not a verified universal fix. Do not assume the current game build supports them. - Unofficial DLLs or “driver booster” utilities: Avoid replacing game or driver components with files from untrusted sources.
- Deleting whole game or profile folders: Settings, crash reports, shader data, and game files can live in different places. Prefer the in-game shader reset and Windows cache cleanup over deleting undocumented folders.
- Repeated repairs or a full reinstall without new evidence: File verification and reinstalling cannot correct a driver reset, unstable tuning, or overheating.
